And like I said above, there's really not much I can think of that would be a good stretch goal for a game like Shenmue in the way that Bloodstained was able to offer. It's just not that kind of a game. Maybe limited edition physical copies could a later revealed stretch goal; it's not like Bloodstained laid all its cards on the table up front either.

Visual novels vary in terms of presentation, but in general, they fall somewhere between an RPG, an anime, and a book(sometimes of the choose-your-own-adventure style). School Days HQ, for instance, is largely animated(though it's fairly simple animation), with lots of choices that wildly change the direction of the story. Fate/Stay Night, also has a lot of choices, though they're mostly branches into various bad endings with a more limited number of actual endings. On the other hand, you have strictly linear visual novels like Umineko, and visual novels that only have a good/bad ending split for specific character routes. Like I said, it varies. As for me, yeah, pretty big fan of visual novels, though I only discovered them a couple years back. Actually just finished Tsukihime yesterday. My favorites include Steins;Gate, Muv-Luv Alternative, Grisaia no Kajitsu and Fate/Stay Night. You had to remind me of School Days, huh? *shudder* Well, at least hopefully Steins;Gate will be released here for the Vita soon so that I can actually have something else to play other than Conception II and Persona 4 Golden. Also, I had pre-ordered Corpse Party: Blood Drive on Amazon. Love that series, and it's not because of the violence. It's because of the storytelling, characters, and the amazing performances that their seiyuus give. School Days has pretty much the best route structure I've seen in a visual novel. The characters are pretty much all reprehensible, but they're supposed to be. It isn't in my top 5, but it's a great VN to play every now and again without a guide just to see where it goes.

Eh, I'm still not satisfied with what he's offering, there were more substantial offering on BS. Pretty much explained how that was inevitable up above. If you're a fan of Shenmue, then what Yu is offering is a miracle. I not.... well you can't parcel out Shenmue into definable gameplay options and upgrades like you can with an action platformer likd Bloodstained.

Ok.... So now that I've seen the video... If I understand this correctly VNs are basically like taking a manga and doing an audio book (reading with voice actors) and slightly-ish animating the static panels from the manga and putting them together as a movie that is playable on consoles/PC. Is that even close? I mean I got the feeling that there really isn't any player participation in what's going on, your just watching a movie that's done with semi-static images rather than full on action. Or am I completely off base? Visual novels vary in terms of presentation, but in general, they fall somewhere between an RPG, an anime, and a book(sometimes of the choose-your-own-adventure style). School Days HQ, for instance, is largely animated(though it's fairly simple animation), with lots of choices that wildly change the direction of the story. Well to start off: Igarashi's Kickstarter was probably the best I've seen ever in terms of community engagement, so yeah, tough to beat as far as presentation goes. We don't know how Yu's is going to go yet as it's only been a single day so far, but I doubt he'll be able to match Igarashi's showmanship or approachability. Bloodstained's KS page was clearly set up for that from the start, which Shenmue's is not.
That said, Shenmue is also much less conducive to having its gameplay parceled out over stretch goals the way Bloodstained was. Just like Bloodstained would never be able to match Star Citizen's ability to keep designing and selling ships to make the funds skyrocket the way RSI did. Shenmue is a very narrative game, so the stretch goals are going to be less impressive by nature as there are fewer extensible gameplay elements. At most I could see a dojo mode where players could play a sort of Virtua Fighter Light versus mode. Wouldn't be bad, but it's not going to appeal to the fans in quite the same way as multiple modes in Bloodstained does.

It was originally a Dreamcast title. It essentially created the QTE (quick time event)as gameplay genre of action sequences which has directly influenced things like uncharted and heavy rain. For its time it was technically astounding both mechanically and graphically, but I only played the first one because in practice... It was slow, full of tedious mini games and clunky to control. I can't speak to the second, nor will I play the third, but obviously the story was gripping enough for some. They will need to make a ton of money to even scratch the surface of previous games' budgets. I think the first cost something like 73 million... In 1999. Chances are they have funding behind the scenes and aren't taking about it. The second one had better pacing and more action scenes, so it might be worth a play even if the first didn't grab you. As far as the budget goes, I don't think it would take as much money to make Shenmue 3 as the first two. They don't have to make a custom engine this time, and one of the reasons the first cost so much money is that it was originally supposed to be a Saturn game until that system lost support, and the team had to remake it for the Dreamcast. Granted, $2M isn't going to be enough, and you're likely right about the outside funding, but I don't think it's quite as bad as the numbers would suggest.

Honestly I'm really floored at how acclaimed this shenmue game is. I never heard of it! and uhh. I really really don't live in a cave when it comes to gaming. I've gamed since the atari 2600, I've purchased indie games before they were called indie and were called shareware, I've owned consoles, portables, PCs, Macintosh PCs, I've bought games for all of them. I craved hard games long before demons' souls made them a fad, before I Wanna be the guy made it a half-fad. I've been a fan of Doujin games before people even said 'indie-game', and people STILL ignore doujin games. I'm named Ghaleon after Ghaleon from lunar: the silver star, because I was a die-hard fan thanks to the sega-CD version, when it was new, NOT the PS1 Remake, and I've always been named such since 199x. I've played games online when my 14.4k modem was top of the line. How the crap is everyone wetting their pants on a game I never heard of? Seriously? rawwrrrrgh! =P This game should be right up your alley then. It was one of the first fully voiced games, and probably the first to do so on its scale. It was an open world game before GTA3 made it popular. It was... well, check out the intro: This was in 1999.

I'm thinking there was insider info. Ben Judd, Iga and team all stated that they picked their funding time specifically to end right before E3. Legendary game makers don't wanna step on each other's toes lol. Yeah, I remember when Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen had their KS going at the same time. Granted, both ended up succeeding, but I couldn't back both at the same time and had to choose one. As for making records... a ground breaking classic cut at a cliffhanger, with a rabid fanbase, created by a legendary developer, advertised at E3... I'm going to go with "it's possible." And I hope it does. Setting aside the fact that I don't think anyone expected this to happen ever(like I would have bet on getting a FF7 remake, Half Life 3 and Megaman Legends 3 announced in the same year before I would have bet on this), Shenmue was an expensive game to make, so it's going to need all the help it can get. The overwhelming success of Bloodstained was welcome, and we'll be getting far more than IGA initially expected because of it. An overwhelming success for Shenmue just means that they can cut less corners in trying to get to what they need.

Technically, the first Castlevania I played was Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, but I don't really count that because it was just an afternoon at a friend's house and I didn't get very far. So my first real Castlevania experience was Castlevania: The Adventure on Game Boy. It was one of five games I owned for the system(along with Metroid 2, Link's Awakening, FF Legend 3 and Tetris), and the first Castlevania I played to completion. I did enjoy it at the time, but I think I would find it too limiting to revisit. My favorite Castlevania is Symphony of the Night. Some of Igarashi's games that came after were better designed, but I've never been a huge handheld gamer, so I still prefer his first. That and the music is absolutely incredible, and the limited sound palette of the following games could never measure up(though I still like them for what they are). Soma Cruz from the Sorrow games is probably my favorite Castlevania protagonist though. Having that inner struggle(insofar as it's actually shown in game) helped give him a bit more depth than a lot of Castlevania protagonists.

Sadly, the time is approaching midnight over here in Japan, so I can't do any of those things. Nope, I'm down to knocking over liquor stores and mugging drunk marines. The consequences for either of those could potentially last longer than two years...

According to the FAQ, we'll be able to upgrade our pledge as well as add on other tiers after the KS is finished. Personally, I would love to get a Collector's Box, but I'm barely able to afford $60 at the moment due to a confluence of bills this paycheck(as in I'll be eating mostly rice for the next 2 weeks after pledging). Depending on how they do it, I will likely upgrade later when I can afford it. Currently the FAQ says this option will be available in the post-KS survey, but I'm hoping they'll continue to take pledges like Pillars of Eternity and Star Citizen have throughout development. I could see myself slowly upgrading my pledge over the course of a few months to keep the strain off my account if that's the case.
So, anyone else thinking about upping their pledge in the days/weeks/months to come?

I voted anime cutscenes. Can't agree with using VHD as inspiration though. I love that movie, but I'm not so hot on the Ninja Scroll-esque character art used for pretty much all the humans. My personal preference would be for ufotable or Wit Studio just because they are both great at action animation, but they are pretty busy with Fate/Stay Night and Attack on Titan respectively.

Honestly, the only reason to get Steam over GOG is if you are already heavily invested in Steam and want all of your games showing up in your Steam library. And since you can add non-Steam games to Steam's library... yeah, there's really no reason to get the Steam version over GOG. Well, I guess if you really like Steam achievements...
GOG is DRM free. Steam is not. So that's a clear win in GOG's favor. The only other major factor would be price, which in this case is equal.

Hello everyone! Just came in from /r/bloodstained/ and figured I'd introduce myself. Been a fan of the Castlevania series since SCvIV, and I backed Bloodstained as soon as I heard about it. Going for the $60 level so I can get the physical copy(going for GOG) and the exclusive content. I'd back higher than that, but my budget is a bit tight at the moment.
This whole thing has me playing through some of the old games. Finished up SotN, and I'm now starting in on Lament of Innocence, which I haven't ever actually finished before(being primarily a fan of the 2D games).
