The core of a visual novel is writing with visual elements that reflect what you are reading. I personally have never seen a visual novel that didn't also have music playing in the background, but it's not technically a requirement.
Most visual novels professionally made in the last decade will also have voice acting, and most visual novels will have choices of some sort in them, though those choices can range from simple route choices(G-Senjou no Maou, Grisaia no Kajitsu) to frequent and complex story forks(School Days, Yu-No), to almost entirely superficial with little actual effect on the story(Mu-Luv Alternative). Some visual novels have gameplay elements, and some newer ones are getting more complicated and engaging visual elements(like the one I posted a sample of in the last page).
One of the biggest differences between most visual novels and other storytelling media is the focus on characters. It is not uncommon for even plot-focused visual novels to spend hours exploring the characters and the dynamics of their relationships before getting to the "meat" of the story(which is why many anime adaptations of VNs have a "boring" first half). This tends to have the effect of creating a greater emotional connection between the reader and the characters than in other media. They go to great effort to make you actually care what happens to the characters in the story, and there are some songs from VNs that make me emotional just hearing them again because of the impact that the related stories had on me.
Basically, VNs are unlike pretty much anything else out there despite having elements in common with other forms of media.

Akame ga KILL isn't related at all to Kill la Kill. And the anime for Akame ga KILL kind of botches the ending.

It seems to be working well for the anime thread, so here's some VN music! As always, never check the comments of a VN you haven't read.

And it will get Clannad at the end of the year. I think this is a good thing, hope to see in the future VNs releases already in english, though this is still a dream, a big one on that, lol. I'm definitely looking forward to Clannad getting an official release. I tired to play it before, but I could push myself past Kyou's route(though I did like that one). I hear that the new translation is supposed to be much better.

I didn't know Steam had Higurashi. Does it have Umineko too? No, and so far it only has the first chapter of Higurashi. It got put on Steam about a month ago. I'm assuming that once all of Higurashi gets put up, Umineko will be next. It's a Mangagamer release, and they actually made it where you can put whatever sprites in the game you want(it comes with new sprites that Mangagamer made in addition to the original). Here it is for about $6.

Besides, the VNs on Steam, even if I had an account, didn't really interest me that much. Well you could buy to support Sekai Project/Mangagamer. There are couple VNs that are worth buying, like Grisaia no Kajitsu (The Fruit of Grisaia) and Planetarian ~the reverie of a little planet~, even World End Economica. Higurashi is a good one too. Someone even put out a patch to use the PS3 sprites and voices.

I don't think I've ever seen a visual novel with anything even resembling high PC spec requirements. Certainly nothing on Steam has anything like that.

I'm holding out on Hollow Ataraxia until the Voice Project gets completed. Carnival Phantasm is great though. Especially the Illya's Castle Special. Good luck waiting for that, maybe in five years or so, lol. And Carnival Phantasm is the #1 Type-Moon anime right now, no objections. That shit is glorious. Enough of that, who here is waiting for Tsukihime Remake? There are some scenes that would be awesome with well-made CGs and OST. I doubt it will take that long. Some guys at Beast's Lair have been working on it for a few months now. Now the Tsukihime Remake? Who knows when that will be out. I was actually going to wait on the remake when I first finished FSN, but then I saw how long it had been in the making already...

Well to be fair, Bloodstained had probably the best handled Kickstarter I've ever seen. I know there are a lot of people that wanted more of Igarashi's specific style of Metroidvania, but I'd say that the amazing level of community engagement throughout the KS campaign is what drove it to the top spot in the video games category.
With Shenmue, Yu is trying, giving interviews, doing an IAmA on Reddit, etc. But frankly, this kind of intimacy between the developer and the fans isn't really something that is common among Japanese developers, and it shows. Yu really needed a competent manager for the KS campaign like IGA had.
Also, as I've mentioned before, there's a lot more excitement to be found in the kind of stretch goals you can squeeze out of an action platformer than the sort of thing you can expand upon in an open-city life simulator RPG. I mean, Yu is talking about future stretch goals like a forklift driving mingame. And you know what? That's really cool if you're already a fan of Shenmue and want to work a part time job in game like you could in the original. But for anyone else? Not so much.

It has received an incredible amount of funding though, of course that's all thanks to their E3 coverage. Not enough funding though. It's pretty much a rule of video game Kickstarters that the minimum goal will only yield a bare bones result. It's the amount of money they need to produce a game, not the game they hope to make. According to Yu, $2M gets us a story-centric game, $5M will allow them to add a feature he really wants to put in the game, and $10M nets us the full open world experience. Granted, $10M is a pipe dream if he only goes through Kickstarter for development funds, but I think $5M is feasible if not a sure thing. What they really need to do is allow for PayPal donations and set up a page/campaign for post-KS contributions. Pillars of Eternity did that, and it seemed to have worked out for them. Star Citizen did as well, but they took it about a dozen steps further and pretty much instituted full on pre-ordered microtransactions. I can't argue with the result, but I don't know how Shenmue could do the same thing, and I really don't know if they should. The whole ambiguous Sony connection is already causing them problems enough.

So reports of Sony funding the game appear to be somewhat inaccurate. After watching this video and reading the recent interviews as well as the IAmA I linked above, it seems that Sony is providing marketing, not development funds. Yu did mention getting some support from here and there, but he also made it clear that the crowd funding is what will determine the scope of the game.
