@autumn I usually agree, but in the case of exclusive Kickstarter rewards, I think it's a little different. The problem with scalpers in the usual context, such as with concert tickets, is that they buy up finite resources, leaving those they take advantage of with no recourse other than to pay the scalper's price if they want what the scalper is selling. But in this case, the finite resource was only the time during which the slacker backer option was open. Anyone could have gotten those rewards for the original price if they wanted. And no one can buy it for that original price now that the option is closed. None of that was affected by someone backing the game with the intent to sell it later.
It's not something I would ever do, but from my perspective, exactly two things happened as a result of this scalper's activity. First, the campaign gained $300 it wouldn't have otherwise. Second, someone who wouldn't have been able to acquire that reward can, albeit for a pretty ridiculous price. The scalper deprived no one of the ability to back at the same price they did. There is no negative consequence. So this is less like scalping and more like simple resell of what is now a scarce collectible.

lovelydumpling It's not that hard to find official claims, to be honest. It is kind of frustrating to see people trying to say they weren't made when they've been made pretty frequently. A few more examples: I wanted to let you all know that the official release date so far is only "2018"Bloodstained is indeed coming out in 2018As far as the release date is concerned, we've only confirmed 2018 so farfor now we're just saying "2018"when we announced that the game would come out "2018"These were all posted in response to claims that the game would be coming out in "spring 2018" or to inquiries as to when the game would be released. There is no ambiguity or lack of confidence in these responses. The official word of release is currently "2018." Any attempts to say that this wasn't the case, or that this was just when they hoped to release the game will be seen backtracking by people looking to tear down the game. And unlike when those people try to make claims of troubled development or comparisons to failed Kickstarters of the past, in this case they would be right. And that's what needs to be avoided at all costs. You can't stop cynics from being cynical. You aren't going to get trolls to stop trolling or malcontents to stop spreading misinformation. But once you've given them something that's verifiable, you've given them a foothold, and they can and will use that to make everything else they say seem more credible. The CotM release debacle was bad enough, but there was nothing Iga or 505 Games could do about that. We seem to have been fortunate in that it mostly only affected backers, so the larger gaming community didn't really notice. This, on the other hand, is entirely within their ability to control. Now Angel-Corlux has come out with the current plan for an announcement should it come to that(like you, I hope it won't, but I don't mind if it needs to), but I'm worried that that sort of nuance in an announcement is going to fall flat in the face of the currently existing communications. I know what they mean, and so do you, but all the gaming community is going to hear is the publisher's official representative mincing words about what actually constitutes a "release window" and then come to the conclusion that what 505 Games says can't be trusted. And we really don't need that. I stand by what I said earlier: The best thing to do if a delay to 2019 becomes necessary is to own it. Say that it's being delayed, and say why it's being delayed. That's it. Don't say anything that's going to cause confusion or mistrust. Trying to frame it as anything other than a delay is just going to cause every update thread on the Internet to be dominated with arguments over what Angel-Corlux actually meant by phrases like "is coming out" and "confirmed 2018."

My take is that, while the word "delay" may make people unhappy and give fuel to some of the anti-crowdfunding people that like to spread negativity at any chance, the far worse situation is where the perception that the publisher or even Iga himself is being dishonest by claiming no delay where one clearly exists. Like it or not, "2018" has been officially stated as the timeframe in which the game is supposed be released. Claims that this isn't technically a release date is weasel wording, and will be seen as such if the game gets pushed to 2019 and that tactic is pursued. In the wake of Inti Create's release debacle, that is something that should be avoided at all costs.
In my opinion, the best approach - assuming that it does become necessary to push back the release - is to be up front both about the fact of the delay and the reasoning behind it. Be clear, be honest, and be proactive. If feedback from the beta dictates that more time is needed to make changes in response, tell us. If Iga feels that more polish is needed for the game to meet his standards, tell us. If the main game is complete, but some of the extra modes need a bit of time to nail down, tell us. But don't try to backpedal and say that 2018 was never the plan and that this isn't a real delay. That will just make people call 505 and Iga liars, and the perception of dishonesty is the absolute worst atmosphere that the game could release to.

A combo system (or anything else that deepens the combat) would in fact make the combat better. I don't think that's a fact at all. Combat in Iga's games is about timing and placement, and while adding combos would certainly change that, I don't believe it would be for the better. Putting the focus on one thing takes it away from another, and one of the things I like about Igavanias is that the exploration and the combat are intertwined. In its most difficult incarnations, you need to master the same skills both to navigate the more complex environments and to defeat the more troublesome enemies. Adding combos would shift away from that, and IMO would make the game worse.

duomaxwell007 The thing is, you don't know what Iga hopes to get out of giving us the demo, and the reason it's called a demo has nothing to do with us(since as you pointed out, they don't need to convince us to buy it) and everything to do with them demoing it at E3. The standing fact that we can go on is that at the time that the Kickstarter ran, the word used to describe what Iga wanted at the time was "beta." And indeed, regardless of what it's called now, that's an accurate description for the unfinished state of what we'll be getting. Maybe Iga wants feedback now, and maybe he doesn't. I would be surprised if he didn't, and I'd be even more surprised if he didn't take heed if feedback overwhelmingly pointed out something that needed to be fixed or changed in some way. I don't expect anything like that to happen outside of actual bugs, but I don't think Iga would flat out ignore feedback that he got.

Without giving credence to unverified IGN speculation, I'll just say this: if it happens, it happens. My only wish is for the final release to be as good a game as it can be. If that happens in 2018, great. If it takes until 2019, no one is going to care about that when they're playing the game again in 2029. They'll just remember the game's quality.

Redogan I don't have much time since I have to go to work, but in essence, DRM-free is a principle thing for some people like FOSS is for a lot of Linux users. As for utility, there's certainly more to it than piracy. The most notable scenarios where DRM gets in the way are in long term game preservation and in circumstances where one does not have access to the Internet. In the former case, with DRM present, the only way to preserve a game is piracy, which shouldn't be the case in order to preserve what is becoming an increasingly large part of our culture. Some publishers eventually remove DRM on their own, but not all do, and those game will eventually become unplayable. The latter scenario may seem inconsequential, but as someone who had to wait 7 months to get Internet access installed after moving to a new apartment before, let me tell you that DRM sucks when you have no way of navigating it. And people in the military deploy to locations where they have no Internet access all the time. They still need something to do in their down time.

Ha, I can tell you're more used to posting on Reddit with those links.
Anyway, to start things off, here's my question:
"If you were to start another independent project after Bloodstained was finished, what would you do differently, and what would you do the same?

purifyweirdshard I guess what I was trying to get at was that story DLC is closer to traditional than cosmetic. The closest thing to cosmetic DLC that games had in the past were little bonuses that developers used to throw out there for free as a thanks to the gamers who supported them.

purifyweirdshard I think the main reason people are in favor of story DLC is that in the last decade, that has taken on the place in gaming that expansions used to. Look at Skyrim or the Bethesda Fallout games and compare them to Morrowind and Oblivion. The latter two came out before digital surpassed physical sales(at least on the PC), and they had full on expansion packs that provided more features, gameplay and story in a concise package. Fast forward to the former examples, and those expansion packs no longer exist. Instead, content gets separated into smaller packages sold individually, but the story-focused DLC comes closest to what we had before. I would be willing to pay for a larger DLC package that maybe had a new wing of the castle or an alternate area with new enemies, and new items and maybe a couple new shard abilities. Priced around $10-$15, it would be a good value added to the overall package. On the other hand, cosmetic DLC just isn't worth my money even at $1 because it adds nothing to the experience. In recent debates people have said they wouldn't mind cosmetic DLC, but the context of that preference is that the alternative in those debates are loot boxes, which many people rightfully loathe. It's not so much that the cosmetic DLC is desirable(remember the horse armor DLC debacle?) as it is that it's better than the publishers exploiting gambling tactics.

roguedragon05 Whether or not they're trying to be jerks isn't the issue. They've been on board with Bloodstained since the beginning, so they definitely knew the Kickstarter was advertised to have a DRM-free version available. It wasn't inexperience that made them fail to comply with the spirit of that advertisement. They chose to put their internal policy above their obligation to the backers. It may have been inexperience that made them fail to realize that the Japan region doesn't encompass all of Asia, but choosing to throw their hands up and go "oh well" instead of working to get the game published in region 3 was, again, a choice. Inexperience may have led them to underestimate how long it would take to get backer codes ready for all platforms, but - and you may see a pattern here - it was their choice to let that stand instead of pushing back the release date until they could supply the backers with their codes. That's three separate points on which they actively made a choice that the people who made the game they developed possible didn't matter. And there has been nothing in their communication or lack thereof that suggests that they are remorseful for this or plan to correct their behavior in future projects. So I don't care whether they are publishing or not, their very involvement in any future projects will make it an instant pass for me, and I will be sure to let any potential backers or customers know why.

roguedragon05 Honestly, there's not going to be a next time for me. The delayed codes was bad, the lack of communication was bad, the blindsiding us with DRM was bad, but actually refusing to release the game in all regions when the backers are from all regions? I'm beyond refusing to support Inti Creates at this point, I'm planning on actively rubbing this in their face any time they ever try to get involved in a crowdfunded project in the future. The quality of their games doesn't mean anything if they're going to treat backers like this. Internal company policies be damned, this project wasn't theirs to trash like this. They've earned a lifetime of anti-hype from me from all this.

I actually got into a pretty vicious argument with my best friend over the fact I thought the backer content should never be made available to anyone but backers which he vehemently disagreed with, mainly because "oh, you were in a bad financial situation and couldn't back the game, or maybe you're young and your parents wouldn't let you, well SCREW YOU! YOU DON'T EVER GET THE COOL THING" being his main argument which does certainly have merit. I'm sorry to get back into this, but how does that argument have merit? I really don't understand how his financial situation at the time or his parent's not allowing it is the fault of the Kickstarter or how it means he's owed the content. If I'm late to the airport and I missed my flight or I didn't buy a ticket to the flight in the first place I'm not owed that flight by the airlines am I?
Your own example flies in the face of your argument. If you're late to the airport or don't buy a ticket, you can just take the next flight. That's an entirely different situation from being locked out of content forever. Also, don't tell people not to quote you or tag you if you're just going to jump right back in whenever you feel like it. Participate in the conversation or don't.

@ikai Yes, the campaign says that GOG and Steam backers will get access to the beta. That's not the same thing as saying that the beta will be on Steam and GOG. It was just specified in the FAQ to distinguish between PC and console backers.

Personally, I was against digital exclusive content from the beginning. There's no real value in it anyway, and all it will do is give people an unnecessary opening for criticism, as it's a practice that tends to be frowned upon by the gaming community. Its existence has the potential to harm critical opinion and sales, and, much like the bonus merchants in Baldur's Gate 2, people who really want it will just pirate it anyway(on PC at least). Better to give future players a way to gain access to it IMO. IIRC, I voted for attaching it to a deluxe edition.
