I love IGA's 3D Castlevania, and Curse of Darkness is one of my favorite, but they objectively had issues especially regarding the graphics and level design. I wouldn't be as excited as I were for Bloodstained also because IGA has got less experience in 3D. Having loved Lament and Curse, however, I would still get it.

This looks promising, a bit rough on the edges but full of love. I'll keep an eye on this, definitely.

Shovel Knight WAS a finished game. The staggered content is completely new campaigns for free. So I don't get it. We may get the complete game retail and then updates to that copy for the extra modes. What is the problem? The new compaign wasn't for free, the new campaigns in Shovel Knight were Kickstarter goals. In the case of Shovel Knight though, people backed the Kickstarter without a physical disc being offered, they were backing a digital only release, so the new campaigns being added afterwards weren't much of an issue. Bloodstained though offered a physical disc. If the goal only hit two million and all we got was the base game of Bloodstained with the standard extras, fine, but they included many other stretch goals beyond that, stretch goals that they used to push people to help them promote the Kickstarter, stretch goals that were not only monetary, but also gained through social media posts, etc. So not only did the fans help push this game higher than it would have ever gotten otherwise, but the money that we put in and we were promised these stretch goals. Instead of providing us with what we're promised ON DISC, IGA wants to further use the extra content to promote "free content to be updated regularly," content that should be on the game, content that we paid for. Yes, we can download these extras as free updates, provided we have an internet connection still, but in 20 years when the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch online services are no longer being supported, these "free updates" won't be available. If IGA wanted to do stretch goals for this extra content to be added at a later time he should have never offered the ability of a disc release. This is just a greedy money grab, because IGA doesn't want to just complete the game, he wants to use this content to promote the game as he's completing it, a big fuck you to the fans who supported him and bought a physical version as the physical version will never be complete. If I knew this shit was going to happen then I wouldn't have put nearly the amount of money as I did. First no Wii U version, now those of us who got physical are getting a forever incomplete game. If IGA goes through with this staggered content release he can go fuck himself. If he does so and delays the release of the retail disc until the game is completely finished, then fine, I'm okay with that, that's a win win for everyone, but I'm kind of doubting that's what will happen. *edit* Btw, I'm aware the "full main game will be on disc." I'm talking about classic mode, rogue like mode, and boss revenge which may not. IGA needs to further delay the game, not screw everyone who bought physical over. It's not like there aren't enough games for us to play, we can wait. I want this game to be as good as it possibly can be ON DISC. As someone who prefers classic Castlevania over exploration style, I actually donated for a physical release the moment we could see it as a stretch goal. So you won't buy a game like Shovel Knight because it's digital only and "in 20 years when the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch online services are no longer being supported, these "free updates" won't be available"? In these times, the digital market is an established thing, and patches and updates, paid or free, are also an established practice. Every game needs updates, mostly patches, but sometimes even free updates or DLC. By your logic, you won't buy any game on disk because the original version on the disk will remain "incomplete" or "imperfect" forever? I honestly fail to see the point you're trying to make. I don't get why a digital game would be fine and a game on disk would not be fine, even though the point of the physical copies is increasingly just becoming that of saving the time to download the whole game on your system. I don't get why you backed an IGAvania for those three modes and not for the main game. I don't get why you need to talk about people go f*cking themselves, greedy money grabs, or why you need to be upset to this extent. I doubt it's much use to come in the official community and be this harsh.

Why does anyone think that "episodes" a là Telltale is even remotely a possibility when talking about "staggered content"? What news have been so bad to make someone think that Iga is even THINKING of something as stupid as splitting the main game in episodes? I'm genuinely baffled at the fuss that's rising from that interview, especially since the community here has been talking about "staggered content" possibilities since FOREVER. Just look. This image was in the first post of this discussion. No episodes AT ALL.

If for whatever reason they feel they need to release an unfinished product why not go the route Dead Cells did? they already need to give out beta access, why not just update that beta access and allow people to purchase that beta access on steam to make what little money they need to complete the game (assuming going over budget is the only reason they would need to release early.) only reason I want the full game on release is because of getting a physical cartridge, I for one wouldn't mind playing the same steam beta as everyone else until that physical cartridge was ready to have the full game. We will have the "full game" at launch. MAYBE the extra modes will come later. Also, the physical copy of the game is still subjected to updates, isn't it? I really can't see why it seems so troublesome for some people. It's not like if you backed the physical version you only get whatever's ready at that moment (which would be the full, main game) and absolutely nothing else. I absolutely prefer to get the main game and key features as soon as they're done. I'd have absolutely accessory modes like boss revenge and roguelike mode later rather than having to wait additional months to play what I backed, that is to say the main IGAvania experience.

Hey all, haven't been on in awhile. Saw the premier with Shankar at Indy Pop Con after he had a panel on it. Only 2 episodes in and just wanted to give an short initial thought before I see the next two. I think this adaptation really brings the life and lore of Castlevania to where it has been with some of its most popular games. The horror, gothic, bloody, and graphic design really is something out of the ordinary these days and (while gross as f**k when seeing it) it is really original to see. I haven't played Lament of Innocence to get the full background lore that the games intended, but when I saw basically what was the intro screen of Castlevania 3 in about 12-16 minutes, I was stoked to see that I knew this plot line and to finally see it played out (what with Lisa, hearing about her from SotN) was just awesome. Dracula, who I did not expect to be a gentle man that warmed up easily to Lisa. The games always painted him as the big baddy that you, the belmont, has to defeat. Its nice that we get to see some development. His rage, once Lisa is burned at the stake, is absolutely brutality and really puts a tingle down your spine. The first moment of all those hell-beasts just ravaging the town one year after his promise is some of the most intense and gory stuff I've seen ON NETFLIX FOR PETE'S SAKE. You know the man means business and his wrath is just bursting with that feeling of "Yeah...this dude ain't going to be easy to beat" Coming into this, I realized that the church played a bigger role than the initial lore says. They are more painted as an antagonist to Trevor (by means of banishing and excommunicating). This caught me off guard. I will mention now I am Catholic, but after some research I can see why the people behind the series went with this decision (due to the time before the reformation. At some point I thought that this was the view on all of the Catholic Church, but it most likely may just be zoomed on those who had the power and became tyrants with it. This is why we see some of the priests here threatening others and the archbishop being this all-powerful figure and acts like a king. It also seems a bit far fetched, but then again, we are only in a few places, not all of Europe. At first I was a bit disappointed, but then, again after research, I felt that it made sense as long as the writers aren't intending the whole church is bad (yeah I agree there are some bad times in the church. We ain't perfect). Hopefully down the road there is some good people of the church down the road for the show. To continue off of that, Trevor's character is good (I agree with what most people said here in the thread), but I find the lack of a religious faith in him. Unless this is later explained (and I will edit my post once I reach the other two episodes), all I see him disliking the church (for understandable reasons), but the thought of God aiding him in his quest wasn't really there. In CV3, Trevor prays before a crucifix before he travels off. I hear that he does use holy water in one of the episodes, but does he have a faith or not? Are we going to see the bible and cross subweapons? I'm not sure just yet. I still think this is a great adaptation even though I have my gripes against it. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest. I'll try to stay alive more around these forums, (just been too busy playing games instead of using the internets these days). Don't worry, later in these episodes there is at least one good priest, and Trevor fights with consecrated weaponry (just the whip and the holy water atm). You've got to keep in mind, though, that they decided to portray Trevor as a bitter man, cynical and disillusioned after his family was banished despite fighting evil creatures to save people. These four episodes are just the beginning of his spiritual quest, so to speak. There are notable progresses towards the end, already. It makes for a really appealing character.

First 4 Figures makes awesome products, but they are ungodly expensive. Obviously you pay for such high quality, but it is way beyond a price that I can afford as a student and occasional worker.

On some obscene Italian sites which have clickbaiting as a primary source of income, this is being dealt with as if the game is going to be released in episodes, a là Life is Strange. Marvelous how poorly informed some so-called "information" sites about videogames can be.

People state Shovel Knights staggered content works, but the people who funded the game didn't have the option of a retail release. You have people who put a lot of money towards the game hoping to actually get a complete game, only to get a half finished game, Yacht Club games then porting it over to every other console imaginable, and only until three years after release do they actually release the remainder of the content. Those people who paid out the a** didn't get a finished game on day one, and they only have the option of a digital version. The people who purchased the first retail release of the game(or even the Vita version which came out later,) only got the main game and Plague Knight mode, and only this year gets an update with the remainder of the content, digital only btw. I put $125 into Bloodstained, purchased the retail copy of the game, and if we do get a staggered version of the game, I'd like them to hold off on the retail copies until the game is complete. If they plan to release retail and digital on day one, then I'd rather have a complete game. I'd rather them put as much time as they have to to give me a finished product worthy of the money that I paid of the game rather than getting it out there as quick as possible so they can just start making money from those who haven't backed it. Releasing an unfinished game and staggered releases is less about doing it for the fans, it's just a nice way of saying we want to get money from people who haven't bought supported us as soon as possible, but for those who put a bunch of money into it to get a game at retail, we just get fu****. I'm not down with that. Shovel Knight WAS a finished game. The staggered content is completely new campaigns for free. So I don't get it. We may get the complete game retail and then updates to that copy for the extra modes. What is the problem?

There are a number of incredible tracks on almost every IGAvania. My favorites would be Dark Night Toccata (from Lament of Innocence), Order of the Demon (Order of Ecclesia) and Toccata Into Blood Soaked Darkness (Curse of Darkness). They aren't in particular order and there are many more I like, but these three are absolutely glorious and grandiose final boss themes. Toccata into Blood Soaked Darkness is my favorite composition from Michiru Yamane, and one of my favorite boss themes ever. Period.

this is proof that western anime can very well be a thing! This was already demonstrated in the past with Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. Exceptional series (in general) on any level. I think I'll watch the Castlevania episodes tonight, after work.

I actually dig the idea of the crystallized familiars/summons. They are after all a manifestation oh demonic crystal powers, so I think it makes sense. The crystal effects should just be more polished, and an option to decide the color of our crystal familiars would be neat.

I agree with Pure Miriam. Diversified food items were present in Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia (possibly in other games too, but I can't really remember. Other IGAvanias maybe were limited to potions and meat? Can't recall right now), while buffing/debuffing items were made obsolete by the various magic systems (and were pretty much already pointless in SOTN). About throwing items, I never understood why some people like them lol they always looked like a big gimmick to me. I certainly am not holding my breath for their return, and moreover they too are made obsolete by the shard system. I'd be fine if the items were just food/healing items (diversified is better) and crafting items for weapons and gear.

Hollow Knight is totally recommended. Outside of IGAvanias, it's probably the best game of that style that I have ever played (I played A LOT), and I think I'm only halfway through. Other than the breathtaking art direction and animations, and the gorgeous OST, it has a lot of character and has complex Metroid style maps, absolutely not linear and can make you wander for a bit but you don't get lost pointlessly and frustratingly. The exploration is very rewarding, and I think that this game is one of the few that truly embrace the Metroid philosophy. Axiom Verge did this approach in a horrible way IMO. "Yay, new skill! You can use it in fifty bazillion places you've already been in, but 99% of them lead to pointless collectibles and weapons you'll use just once for the sake of novelty! Let's make the player wander for hours, because Metroid is about getting lost!" yeah, no.
Before, this spot was Dust's which has fantastic graphics and music, a fun and rich combat system, awesome story. The only downside is that it was way too easy on the normal setting for me. I had to play the highest difficulty right away or I would've felt omnipotent almost the entire time.
Guacamelee is hard, and some platforming sections required to get some secrets are absolute HELL (like Super Meat Boy level), but it was so fun and rewarding! Also with a lot of personality and a deep combat system once you got all the skills.
Valdis Story is also cool. It has a somewhat in-depth combat system, with a lot of skills, skill trees, stats you can invest in and so on, many characters to play as. Strangely though (I usually complete these games 100%, with all the achievements and stuff) it didn't keep my attention for more than one playthrough. I didn't replay it on higher difficulties, or with other characters, nothing (also, achievements were far too many and time consuming, other than difficult). I believe it's because the environments and art style were a bit too generic, and the maps were nothing too special. It's a really fun game, and I enjoyed my playthrough with it, but for a game that's supposed to be greatly replayable it didn't quite click with me.
I have yet to buy Ori, Owlboy, Rabi Ribi and Shantae Half Genie Hero; they look really promising but I have too many games to play atm, there's not really a point in spending more money now.

Order of Ecclesia's hard mode was wonderful, though. Increased damage and punishment, but also different and brutal enemy placement. yup. The level cap raised to 255, and you can equip dual death rings, then the best equipment queen of hearts or something on second play through, I love seeing shanoa doing insane damage to boss. I did that as well as a hard mode level cap 1 with a clear save. Hardest frickin' thing I've ever done in an IGAvania lol. Far more difficult than Portrait of Ruin's level 1 hard mode.

I've only got Episode 5 of Heretic to complete.
I've been continuing The Evil Within. The game is really hard and sometimes frustrating, but its aesthetic is really good. Sort of medium ground between Resident Evil and Silent Hill. I have to do Chapter 11 ATM.
Courtesy of Steam sales, I am also playing Darkest Dungeon and Hollow Knight. The latter is sucking up most of my spare time, it's honestly that good. One of the best metroidvanias I've ever played (I played a lot!). Darkest Dungeon is a bit complex and stressing, it's awesome but I have to be calm to play it. Right now I have to face a difficult exam so I tend to play only relaxing games, this is also why I've been mostrly playing Hollow Knight and not the other games in this few days.

I'm happy with 320k. But I don't know if PayPal applies to the count. It didn't with Bloodstained, but that was then. So I'll ask officially, does PayPal pledges add to the Kickstarter direct fund? I wouldn't know. Maybe the devs will shed some light on this in the next days.
