I think I can spitball off of a few of the ideas here. I really like the idea of save rooms containing special rewards, of them having the Lesser Demon statues, and the idea of training areas. Maybe instead of a simple boss re-fight, each save room could include a bell, lever, or other intractable object that lets you go into a training area with an obstacle course and/or some enemies to fight, where you can practice your skills. Maybe you sleep in a bed to save, and have the option to enter a dream... However, each training room also has a secret challenge, hinted by a mural, window, painting, or other feature in that room. Complete the challenge, and you receive a secret reward from the statues.

This is a fantastic suggestion. One thing that I've always loved in any series, but in Igavania games in particular, is the little hidden aspects, the secrets. Things ranging from as simple as the extra boss in LoI, to things like the chairs you could sit in to make things happen in various games, to complex as the layers of puzzles needed to access the inverted castle in SotN. Finding out something new that you didn't know you could do, getting something you never knew was there, sparks the imagination and makes you want to keep playing again and again to see what else you might find, and I love that.
Just the idea of the cat gives me this idea of how you could have multi-layered secrets...
If a "pet is with you, it will be able to get into certain areas that you couldn't reach and bring you things, but there are some areas it can't reach. There's a mouse, but it will run and hide if it sees the cat. The cat will leave if certain dog-like enemies attack you. Give the mouse cheese, and it will follow you instead. The mouse can get to places the cat can't, but there are some gaps it can't cross. Is there an item that requires working with both? Are there other animals that will help in similar ways?

When it comes to bugs and glitches, I honestly think that some bugs make a game more enjoyable. As long as they don't break the game, or come up in normal gameplay, it's not a problem. Just playing around with the bugs in a game can add more replayability just to play around with them. Besides, it's not really possible to have a 100% bug free game.
