After watching the gameplay of Chasm, I'm realizing something about myself that bothers me. I really, really enjoy the 2D IGAvania gameplay, the music, and the atmosphere. It's great! I think it is great for devs to make this type of game. It plays like the type of games I used to play back in the day. What I do not like is that the devs are making the game look like it did back in the day. It's great for nostalgia, but I feel like these games could use a better visual style/look to let people know that the game is modern. I know that better graphics is not something all devs can afford to do, but I feel like it is their duty to release a game that looks like it is from 2017 and not 1985. Game systems in 2017 are capable of so much more than the graphics used in games from the 80s.
Chasm looks like a game pulled right from the mid 80s. I find myself looking back at other recent games that chose a retro 8 or 16 bit look over a more modern one. Axiom Verge, UnEpic, and The Binding of Isaac come to mind. They are great games to play, but the graphical style adds nothing to it aside from the nostalgic retro feel. It really prevents me from getting into some of these games. I couldn't get into Axiom Verge for this reason. Salt and Sanctuary, for example, is a 2D side-scrolling, modern game that has a unique modern look to it. Other examples of the old school play, but modern look are Strider (PS4), Rayman Legends, Trine 1/2, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, and Mighty No. 9. To me, when a new game comes out in 2017 (and beyond), it should either be in full 3D or in 2D/2.5D with a sleek graphical style.
I'm really looking forward to Bloodstained because it is using a modern look (thanks to 2.5D) but retains the 2D gameplay mechanics. I will enjoy playing the retro Bloodstained game, but it will never draw me in like the main game has/will.
Am I crazy to think this way? On topic, I guess my question for the broadcast would be: Do the developers of Chasm (and other games like Axiom Verge) feel that the old school graphical style is required to make the game what it is? If not, why not go with a more modern look while retaining the old school gameplay?
TL;DR: IMO, games nowadays should have old school gameplay with a modern graphic style.

One detail that I initially failed to notice in the Kickstarter update (listed here as well on the top of page 1) is the intended source of the " red light". For those curious enough, here's some basic information on the 1783 Laki eruptions. I already posted about this in the Shoutbox earlier, but I'll just leave it here for permanence. Just read through that article. Interesting back story for the village and surrounding areas. I think it would be cool to have some of the outside areas in Bloodstained to have a bit of fog/haze floating by ominously. To tie it in, the townspeople could all think it was from the Laki eruptions, but in reality it is the fog of war brought on by Gebel summoning the demons.

Awesome battle XombieMike! (Of note, I noticed that the platforms are much brighter on the ship than the rest of the surroundings. I don't recall anyone mentioning it about the Galleon Minerva. But everyone seems to notice it in the Village.)

It would be nice to have a revote on Miriam's shader after seeing the new update. The backgrounds look very nice and realistic, but Miriam looks less detailed and washed out in comparison. I wouldn't want them to go back (and I don't think they will). They need to be moving forward, not keep going back and changing things they have already decided on. And that's saying something since I vastly preferred the realistic shader on Miriam. They actually stated that they were done with community feedback on the art direction in one of the updates: Update #35 - January 20, 2016 "And, as I've pointed out in the latest Ask IGA, this will be our final request for art-direction feedback. I'd like to ask for any final thoughts you have now, so we can move forward and start putting things in motion. - IGA" EDIT: It occurs to me now that others have already pointed out what I was saying here. So, feel free to disregard all or parts of it. Also, welcome to the forums dannycampbell88. We need people to point out when something isn't right as well as people to sing praises when it all comes together the way we want.

Regarding the lighting on the platforms and the red tint on everything in the village:
The lighting seems right to me due to it being a twilight/dusk time setting. I imagine the sun going down on the side where the players are and shining that last bit of light on the village buildings, giving it that red look. The platforms (probably made of a different material that shines brighter--almost like a ceramic yellow shingle) are tilted toward the light at just the right angle so they have a different hue.
I think the lighting in the village is OK. It gives off an ominous tone that is perfect for the beginning of an adventure.

Oh, and with regard to Miriam running in the air....it seems that she is running on the roof while it is falling. I don't think she would run in mid-air if the platform wasn't under her. If the roof falls first and she follows it, then the just falls. If it falls with her, then her feet are still on the roof and she can still take steps. Right? Also, everyone should look closely at the depth of background shown at the very beginning of the village. It is quite impressive. You can see buildings going back away from the foreground in great detail. It almost looks like a photograph:

As others have said, I feel like Miriam is standing out due to the difference in shaders for Miriam and the backgrounds. They need the same shader throughout. It seems like it would be easier to switch Miriam over to the realistic shader than it would be to switch all the backgrounds over to illustrated-look shader.
I've been saying that Miriam looked "pasted on" to the environments since way back with the shader decisions. She has always looked that way to me. Why make a stink about it now? The village video is awesome. Maybe have Miriam's shadow look a bit sharper on platforms, but everything is looking good to me.

If we are getting NG+ with increased difficulty, then I would like to see something like the Curved Nil Greatsword from Dark Souls 2. The sword gets stronger with every NG cycle. I would kind of be like the Badelaire I guess.
