I thought it was cool in PoR where you could attack a zombie with a fire weapon and have it turn in to a skeleton. Pretty cool because it makes sense. Burn all of the zombie's flesh away and all you are left with are the bones!
Anyway, PoR's castle was pretty good. Not a fan of reusing the portraits though.

Yep, I could pretty much see this as only used during Speed Runs. If you don't even see the animations, then you are missing out on a big part of the gameplay. But, if you are bored and want to save half a second here and there, go for it I guess.
I doubt I'll ever use any type of animation cancelling because it looks bad. It makes the game look like it is buggy and glitched. Might as well have Miriam wiggle in front of the enemy and have slash marks hit them across the face.

(1) The size. There is a trend in IGAvania games where the castles seem to be getting smaller. Or at least it feels smaller (see individual maps for locales in OoE). This could be due to the game map being a summation of smaller maps. When I open up the map on Bloodstained for the first time, I want there to be a tiny indicator for where I am way down at the bottom--indicating that the game map will eventually take up the entire screen. I'm not a fan of the inverted castle, reused portrait maps, castle A, B, A+B, etc. SOTN is my favorite game of all time, so I forgive a lot of things that others complain about. That being said, the inverted castle was difficult to traverse due to the need to use an ability in order to make most jumps. (My double-jump would miss most ledges by a hair which caused me to have to change into a bat/mist or use my moon jump. That gets old real fast.) The fact that Bloodstained will be IGA's biggest castle ever couldn't make me happier. To me, that means that there won't be an inverted castle or the like.
(2) Background touches. I really like it when the backgrounds have cool things going on as you traverse an area. It could be anything from the floating eyeball outside the window, the waves crashing on the galleon Minerva, birds/bats flying by, lightning, lava flares, water fountains (blood fountains), to interactive elements like the confessional in SOTN or the telescope that you can use to look out at the ferryman. In particular, I like weather effects to be going on where appropriate--snow, rain, lightning, heat, aurora borealis, meteor shower, etc. I particularly like the water dripping in the caves in SCIV.
(3) Locales. The more locales the castle has, the better. If this is a castle, then I expect: forest surrounding the castle complete with moat and drawbridge (galleon Minerva could crash onto land at the edge of a forest), castle exterior wall, courtyard, castle proper/entrance, greenhouse, maze garden, castle center, east wing, west wing, dungeon, catacombs, four towers, mess hall/dining hall, ball room, bell tower, master's chambers, science/alchemy laboratory, etc, etc. The list goes on. More locales means more awesome backgrounds as well as eliminating the problem of rooms seeming repetitive. I agree with what was said of SOTN. The areas seemed to change frequently enough to prevent that repetitive feel.

Yes, more Marsil love! The sound effect when you perform the weapon's ability has a satisfying reverberation. Sometimes, when no one is watching me play, I stand in an empty room and use the special over and over. Ah, good times.

I think Physical and Digital should be released at the same time.
RE: Bloodstained release content The only thing I am really concerned about is whether they release the game as episodic content or as a whole game. It would ruin the game for me to have it released as episodic content. I couldn't stand to play say chapters 1-3 and then have to wait a month or two to get chapters 4-6 and so on and so forth. I want the entire game (minus DLC and other goodies) in one go as the main release for the game.

I don't want chapter releases for this game. I want the whole she-bang at once. They can add more content later, but the main game should ship altogether.
I'm loving the sound effects btw. Very nostalgic and awesome!

What is the giant thing that attacks the ship and breaks the ship open to the outside? It looks out of place with the rest of the stage. Hyper-colorful.

Not a fan of the harsh outline the shader puts on the cannon's barrel. Other than that, it looks great!
EDIT: Maybe change the color of the shading to a dark outline--like what is on Miriam's leg in the idle pose.
EDIT2: I'm actually looking back at other recent footage and Miriam, the cannon, and the chests all seem to pop out too much. The shader is making those things look like they are paper cut-outs glued onto the background. The backgrounds all look amazing, but the said items don't look like they belong. It is like the backgrounds have depth, but the other pieces look flat and pasted on. Kind of like in a Paper Mario game or something. I don't notice it on Miriam when she is in motion--only when she is idle. Hopefully they can tweak the shader to have it not pop those items so much.
Gotta say I agree with the cannon barrel. It's like they have to make it obvious you can use it. I rather discover things for myself without the game telling us hey check this out. Ditch the outline look there.
Although I disagree about the items in the background. It looks like the shader on Miriam. If anything I wish the BACKGROUNDS would change more to that look, give it a more painting look like the items and Miriam has.
While I would prefer not to change the backgrounds (because they are awesome), it would make everything feel "right" if everything matched. So either change the items a bit to not pop so much or make the backgrounds have the same type of outline on edges and such so that foreground and background look like they belong together.

I'm a big fan of the Minerva stage so far. It reminds me of the ship from the beginning of Legacy of Darkness (as others have said). In LoD, you get ferried by Charon (we assume) to the anchor of a huge ship. It is basically filled with monsters and ghosts. Then the ship is destroyed and you find yourself on a pier that leads to the forest surrounding the castle. I know a lot of people didn't like the N64 Castlevania games, but you can't deny that they had amazing atmosphere! If Bloodstained can produce that feeling of the "castle approach," then they have really accomplished something.
I got an almost immediate God of War vibe when I saw the outside part of the ship. I thought we might see a giant Hydra jump up over the side!
Yeah, too early to tell. NX could turn out to be the best console evar!
...or the worst ever. Let them deliver on the 7 platforms they already promised before talking about the NX that no one even owns yet because it doesnt exist.
He's not wrong!

I'm noticing this as well. The broadcast is only accessible to me if I play it through a browser. My podcast software only downloads the bsb-logo picture instead of the actual broadcast file.
Give it a shot now and let me know if it's fixed. Thanks for letting me know.
Fixed. Thanks, Mike!

LeoLeWolferoux: Sooo... I guess some dude on Twitter stumbled across a financial document from 505 games indicating that a '2nd version' of Bloodstained was in the works??? back sometime in like 2021???
Apr 15, 2023 21:00:49 GMT -6
LeoLeWolferoux: How am I just now finding out about this/ C'mon, IGN. Get it together.
Apr 15, 2023 21:01:12 GMT -6
LeoLeWolferoux: Dunno how this Twitter user came across these documents, tho, assuming since they don't know any further details, it wasn't someone *from* 505 Games. I certainly hope it was obtained via legal means...

XombieMike: Shortly after 505 let that document go public the official Bloodstained twitter confirmed there will be a second game. ArtPlay is finishing Bloodstained DLC and then we will learn more about the next game.

Redogan: Nice to see a project update! I like the new Classic 2.0 mode with Dominique. Looks like it plays like a traditional CV game--which is a good thing. Glad to see some gameplay video of Chaos and VS modes, too!

ShroudedTraveler: Did they say when they were releasing the update with Dominique? I don't recall seeing anything in the video, so I'm assuming not
Sept 7, 2023 16:40:01 GMT -6
Redogan: I didn't see anything about the release date. I just know that it is paid DLC. (So, us backers don't get it for free. Which is fine.)

ShroudedTraveler: Yeah. At this point, with the game being as old as it is, I'd be fine paying for the content.
