Happy holidays! How did you spend yours? At Fangamer we're ringing in 2017 by recovering from an office-wide chest cold. (Smart money is placing the blame on shipping packages six days a week during the Christmas rush, but since IGA got sick last update and we got sick this update, I'm going to be mighty suspicious if Mana or Ben Judd comes down with something later this month.)
As IGA mentioned in the last update, we have some video of a new environment to show off—so let's get right to it! Merry Christmas! This is IGA.
Last update we shared how we build the environment, so for this update, we would like to introduce you to a new stage based on that method. Previously, we shared the ship and the castle entrance. I would like to introduce you to the village this time.
As we mentioned at the beginning of our Kickstarter campaign, Bloodstained takes place in a castle! So now you're probably thinking, "What's this, a village?"
I thought so, too, but yes: We have a village. In the narrative, we're still headed to the island where the castle emerged. There's a village nearby that we'll have to pass through on our way to the castle entrance.
As you can tell from the video, the village is red, which has nothing to do with Christmas! During the eruption of the Laki volcanic fissure in 1783 and 1784, "the afternoon sky was dark as night and red as blood," according to a contemporary saying from Hampshire, England. So we tried to express that in the afternoon scene you see here.
Building your visuals from a piece of historical data makes the world more realistic. (The internet is so useful!) The village is also under the demons' attack, so of course there will be enemies here. We are also planning to put a shop here to support the player, and you'll find Johannes, who we introduced previously, here too.
In addition to Johannes...Oh, we can't quite tell you yet, but you'll hear more about them in our later updates. Please look forward to it.
Finally, I would like to answer a few more of your questions for next month's update. After that, we've invited Michiru-san to answer questions for a future update. Source--- Ask IGAFor next month's Ask IGA, he'll will be answering his favorite questions from multiple categories: - Gameplay
- Storyline
- Development
- IGA / Wild Card
If you'd like to ask one, tweet @swordorwhip using the #AskIGA hashtag. --- External LinksLinks to watch over also (mostly for the devs and people gathering information) Reddit | Kickstarter comments | Facebook | YouTube | Bloodstained forums: Just read these pages of feedback.

A new environment is always fun to see.
Admittedly, when I first saw it, my first thought was "Hold on, the game starts off on a boat ride and the core game takes place in a castle. Where does this town come from? Is it inside the castle?" But then I saw the E-Mail update I got, we have to pass through this town to get to the castle. Sounds good.
The location kind of makes me think of the Dracula X town without the fires.

The only problem that I have with the current build of this game that we are seeing is the lighting and Miriam's animations( I am sure they will fix these issues), other than that, an excellent update , this types of updates really makes me happy and hyped for the game! Keep it up IGA and happy new years to you too!

Simon's Curse? We headed back to Jova?
I have to say, from a technical standpoint, it's amazing how 2D the 3D assets not just look, but function. The camera I'm sure is doing a lot of the work there ( very impressive feat as well) but the assets themselves are definitely pulling their weight. I've seen and played a lot of 2.5D games but the devs here have really raised the bar. Bravo, guys.

I am starting to grow anxious about this game. Last two updates are very disappointing. First, we see odd procedural-generated broken columns which seem so obviously unrealistic it hurts my eyes. Now this village with background visually separated from protagonist. No offence, but I don't believe this current picture. I hope devs see this flaws and will fix everything in time.

A great update! It is very exciting to see a new area. I love the dark red sky and the moon. Very appropriate for a game named Bloodstained. I also appreciate IGA using historical facts which are being incorporated in the game.

That was a nice little clip. New Bloodstained footage is always welcome!
Like others have said, the village reminds me of the one from Castlevania 2 and Rondo of Blood. It's also neat how there's some real-world inspiration behind its presence in the game.
We didn't learn the name of the village in this update. I hope its name is never officially revealed so Bloodstained fans will have no choice but to call the human characters living in this environment "The Village People."
Anyone have any story-related theories Johannes has for being at the village? Was he trying to flee, but didn't have access to a ship? Did he leave for Gebel's castle a couple of days before Miriam and get stuck there because he's having a hard time dealing with monsters? Or maybe he was just minding his own business, just looking for discarded flesh and human remains for dinner or alchemy-related experiments, and just so happened to get pulled into the whole story once Miriam shows up?
Thank you to everyone involved with making this update possible!

This looks wonderful! I just hope they don't over do it with the destroyed stuff. I know we've only seen a tiny fraction of the areas the final game will have, but I hope we get to see areas that look a little more beautiful and less like crumbling structures.
Also I forgot this game takes place in England. Does that mean the voice actress for Miriam will be British?

Anyone have any story-related theories Johannes has for being at the village? Familybusiness before the chaos, now it is all in ashes and he does what he always have longing for, listen to his call to help others, and alchemy.

I understand the concern but don't forget, this game has a looooooooong way to go to be even considered an pre-alpha, we are not even suppose to see these builds, showing these are amazing! So be patient my friend, trust me IGA never lets us down

I like the look of the background and what they are trying to do with the effects in the sky and what not. That being said, I feel there is a clash between Miriam and the background that I didn't feel was present for the Galleon Minerva stage or some of the footage they showed last month. Could it be a lighting issue? I feel the "3D-ness" of Miriam looks especially emphasized here? I could be overthinking things however.
The update is appreciated and I look forward to learning more about the extended cast <3

Robie Belgrade and David Hayter aren't British, so don't expect it of Miriam. What if they somehow manage to trick us all into thinking they're British when they're really just manipulating their vocal cords and pronouncing things in a certain way? That'd be pretty crazy! Familybusiness before the chaos, now it is all in ashes and he does what he always have longing for, listen to his call to help others, and alchemy. Did the Johannes family business involve using other people's flesh or remains for scientific or culinary taboos?

So here are my thoughts:
> I really like how the platforms are more distinct from the environment now, its more evidence of positive response to our feedback and I love it! >From what I'm willing to bet, either this village will be where we get onto the boat and sail to the island, or its on the island and where we dock. Either way, I'm very happy to see some outdoor environments! >As for the environment itself, I do like it a lot with the red sky; though I have to concur with some of the viewers that due to the lighting or some other effect I cant place, Miriam seems a bit out-of-sync with the actual background visually. But we're over a year out and Im sure that will be resolved. >The tease! Oh damnit more character teasing!
Overall, very happy with the update!

The village looks great. Very atmospheric and that red sky really does bring everything together. The part where that ceiling fell (which was cool) and Miriam walked on as it was falling was kinda weird though. Just something I noticed.
Overall, a pretty nice update. The next Ask IGA should definitely be interesting.

Looks amazing!
- Miriam looks a bit out of sync is because of the fact that the lightning effects are not reflected on her, I'm pretty sure this is something that will be added later.
- I hope that they will make the trees sway or make leaves fall slowly, this will add a lot of life to the environment but again.. I think this is something that will be added later!
Everything else is on point!
