Well, side by side, I still like perspective, and that's a surprise to me.

Wow after seeing the images of two perspective, side by side, the perspective projection still retains that appeal for me. It's really making me think that the shaders are pretty much the key for improving the overall look of the game.

I've said I prefer Orthographic Projection (or something closer to that) and I still stand by that though I'm perhaps a little less strict on that than I was maybe a day or two ago. That isn't to say I don't trust IGA & crew to deliver a beautiful and quality game with Perspective Projection (and he could certainly have some cool things planned with that perspective choice), I just know from past experiences that I've thought games, past and present, using a more orthographic approach have often been the ones I often thought looked better. They have also often been the games with tighter controls but that may have been more a function of the developers who have made such games in the past rather than anything intrinsic to that perspective.
I feel I recall Shadow Complex being a game IGA was impressed with during the launch stream but though I haven't gotten a chance to play the game yet myself, I don't think I was the biggest fan of its perspective from what I saw. Trine 2 is probably a good recent example of a Perspective projection game that looks great though the comparison is a little though since the level design is so unlike the Igavania games. I wish there was a way to compare and contrast how rooms in this game might like in both perspectives both in screenshot form and short video form but I have no idea if that is a unreasonable demand in regards to the work the developers have to do (especially with the holiday break fast approaching). I suspect it likely is an unreasonable request though.
EDIT: Mike's photoshops are cool but its a bit hard to compare a real, if early, in-engine screenshot with something made in photoshop. If the developers could actually make that orthographic perspective in engine (again they may not have the time to do so I dunno) then a real comparison could be made. That being said, I'm just expressing my preferences, not demanding any change take place.

I almost never hear anyone mention stained glass... Am I the only person who is really hoping that the amount of cool stained glass will be like 10X found in castlevania? I rather love the stuff myself.
That said I think it's important to note that you need a perspective camera in order to properly admire beams of light shining thru stained glass to light the floor below.... otherwise you wont really see the floor below.

Like I said there is a middle ground. The prototype wasn't completely orthographic. It has some tilt and it was the best of both worlds. They should lessen the tilt at least.

never! If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing! The perspective should be inverted 180 so we can't see anything but the wall behind the character!
Seriously though, I personally have no idea what I think makes the best 'angle'. Again, I like elsword, which kinda moves the camera angle around, so.. yeah I guess I'm pretty open to a variety of em.

Yeah, I agree with croc. Mike's images are showing something conceptually, yes, but the team themselves would probably make the orthographic view look a good bit different/more what you all had originally imagined. I wouldn't let a Photoshop scare me so, it just shows the basic idea of what the perspective view means.
That said, as with all things, I think the truth/answer lies in striking a balance in all of these areas. A compromise between the spirit of 2D gaming and the vast potential of 3D space to show detail.

Orthographic all the way. If Perspective is used it will ruin the game in my opinion. Not even a little? Not even a little. I like games in Perspective but I am really hoping for this game stay true to old school side-scroller style. I miss it.

Hrm, personally I think I prefer the perspective style. I know that orthographic mock up is nothing official but side by side I think the perspective one looks better. It might need a few adjustments but I think it has a lot of potential.

Sun of May Did you play Dracula X Chronicles? That had really good 2.5D Castlevania action. I'd like to know your opinion on that game.

I'd actually like to know her thoughts as well because I honestly disliked the look of Dracula X Chronicles yet a lot of people here seemed to dig it's look. The 2d version was superior to me in every way.

I enjoyed Dracula X Chronicles for it being a different flavor of the same game, but yeah I still thought the 2d version was superior.

Orthographic Projection for me, I love that real 2D feel. The other one (perpective) ruins the game for me, really. I can`t stand it. If the game is that way, at least I will have the soundtrack hehe..I am sure I will play the game however it is, but the perspective projection hurts my eyes.

I am curious now because I have not played Dracula X Chronicles yet. I never really played my PSP and that system came out when I was working a lot and did not have time for gaming. I am now playing catch up. I may have to check it out. I need to first get a functioning PSP, my two batteries bubbled and no longer work. haha

Well, I guess you don't have to play the game to at least form an opinion on how the perspective looks. Aesthetically it looks "okay" at best to me. I love some of the back drops but the Perspective Projection does not do it for me. I think ill stick with Orthographic. Its just preference though, they both have positives and negatives for sure.

To be fair, DXC has way less of a tilt than Bloodstained seems to have. Bloodstained has the Mighty No 9 doll house look to it, i would be fine with the amount of tilt DXC ...it seems like a happy middle. I still think the visuals of the game look very bland though. So i'm glad they're going for that more shader drawing look.

Keep in mind that Miriam is near the bottom of the screen in this picture. Assuming that she'll usually be near the center during gameplay like in previous Castlevania games, the tilt would be less than shown here most of the time.

So I just watched this video (yes, I'm way behind the times; I'm sorry) and couldn't help but note that Iga said to keep a little tilt in the camera angle because he liked being able to see the floor. So I think that the final product will be sticking with the perspective view.

I don't recall it being such but I didn't look at it again, I really don't care enough.
