Shader 1, hands down the best by far.
The way the darker reds play out in the sky that we see through the windows, the way the blood-red lighting from the windows is cast to the floor, the way the shadows are cast on the bookshelf, to the way Miriam herself looks by comparison to Shader 2 (the crystals on her legs look fantastic and pop right out at you in Shader 1 but look bland and dull in Shader 2)
All of the above trumps Shader 2 easily in my eyes. Miriam looks washed out, pale and lifeless in Shader 2 (the hatched shadows look very skewed and don't do the environment justice either). It's not even a competition!
And seriously, there is something terribly wrong with those boots of hers in Shader 2!!! (same goes for the gauntlet, but the boots stand out a lot more at first glance, they look faded and overly glossy, as does Miriam in general in this shader, like a barbie doll).

I chose Shader #1. However, I really like what XombieMike did with the custom shader. It gives another vision of what could be Shader #2 in the final product. Actually, I still prefer the colors from the #1 but I agree with the idea, expecially about the details displayed.
To me, #1 is : • Brighter • Warmer • More detailed • Less "gridded" • More beautiful in terms of : - Shadows - Colors - Ambiance
I think we got to gather people's opinion about Shader #2 though. We need more polls like this one with more rooms, different spaces with a blue tone like Mike suggested. I hope it won't be the last pair of shaders Igarashi-san & Inti Creates will share with us. Can't wait to see more. Thanks for the subject.

I most change my mind and I'm mostly all in on Shader 1.
I still think Shader 2 looks better on Miriam though. The cross hatch look on the shadows of shader 2 look cool but I don't know how you can fit that in shader 1.

Good feedback on the shaders guys. Not much to add, but I wrote the following in the comment section of the Shader Survey.

Having monsters come out of a Z-axis and attack you whilst you only move and attack along the X & Y axes sounds like a great way to frustrate the player. Graphical flourishes in the background seem fine & cool though.

Doesn't the Alucard shadow clone come from the background?
That's all sprite work, but it can't be that hard to do.

I don't remember this well and I don't have either of the Sorrow games on hand to check.

3 minutes in shows how basically the background comes to life and attacks you. That leafy monster is just about invisible. Around 17 minutes a dog jumps out from a painting to attack you. At 18 minutes a blank picture suddenly has someone come out of it and take a swing at you. About 20 minutes in you have my favorite: the wall hanging skeletons that appear outta knowhere to claw at ya.

Doppelganger comes out of the portal straight onto the stage, no background elements
paranoia isnt affectable unless its on the stage but the mirror beams are essentially a stage hazard
balore is another combination boss with attackable hands and stage hazard attacks
sotn dracula has dual stage hitboxes as well as a background section and creates stage hazards
Theres the cv4 paintings that grab you but i dont think they do damage
Theres probably a couple more

I just realized that the intro to Portrait of Ruin is 3D. Do people in here think it looks good? I personally think it looks rather nice and stylish.

I really like it. I would watch a whole series of it. Would it fit Bloodstained? Sure it could.

A) Most of the cited examples of "enemies coming out of the Z axis to attack you" still represent foes that whose hitboxes and hurtboxes only exist in the X and Y dimensions. I had something different in mind from what cecil-kain suggested with enemies having their hitboxes and burtboxes in different planes or being able to strike at least initially without exposed hurtboxes. Nonetheless, I'd prefer it if those sorts of foes where kept rare as they were in even past games.
B) I forgot the opening for Portrait of Ruin was 3D. Pretty average quality CGI IMO. I'm not ideologically opposed to CGI but it needs to be better stylized and with more color than what I saw there. The recent Jojo openings would be a bar for what I consider some quality, lively Japanese CGI. I think ufotable has done some good CGI work with God Eater and the Fate series too. CGI talent in Japan is improving but 2D is still their forte and they don't have a shortage of quality animators to do the job.

Shader 1 is superior. Better coloration, better details, etc. With as colorful as the concept art is, it would be almost criminal to desaturate the coloration as much as shader 2 does.

As for potentially being " the global shader", I feel Shader 1 is the best choice. Nicely saturated colors that give that feeling of being in a lush environment appropriately suited for an Igavania game. Shader 2 can work if it's a shader used non-globally (or as " a local shader" ) such as only for cut-scenes and certain events. Shader 2 has its uses, but definitely not as the main shader.

I think shader 1 us better, but if the two could be combined, i think shader 2 may then have a better chance.

However, I freakin' HATE when Castlevania turned into that sunday morning action/cartoon thing. Bring back the SOTN/ARIA/OOE style any day of the week...please
