Kickstarter Update #76 December Update - Development News and the Team at WorkMerry Christmas. IGA here. This year is coming closer to an end... In this update, we have a very important announcement to make. Bloodstained will no longer be supported on Mac and Linux. We have made this tough decision due to challenges of supporting middleware and online feature support and making sure we deliver on the rest of the scope for the game. We will be offering backers who planned to play the game on Mac and Linux the option to change the platform of their order. If you would like to change your platform, please send an email with your new platform request from the email address associated with your Kickstarter pledge. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and we hope for your understanding. Development has reached its peak — we are currently checking the performance of Bloodstained on each platform. Overall, we are done with enemy placement and entering the adjustment phase. But there are still many progression-blocking bugs that must be taken care of. I’d like to pass along some photos of the development team. IGA at work IGA at work It doesn't look like we are in a crunch period, does it? But we actually work quietly like this most of the time. WayForward have already helped us improve the game in a number of ways, including creating incredible assets and lighting placements that we’re looking forward to. Today we’d like to share a new enemy concept art. This is Forneus, a demon fish. I would hate to come face to face with him at an aquarium… Well, Forneus will be useful for cooking, and will surely be delicious. Our whole team is working very hard. We look forward to your continued support. As always we've collected some of our favorite fanart from the Bloodstained community for your perusal. If you'd like to be a part of this gallery in a future update, tag your art #igavania or #bloodstained to help us find it! Keitchez knerrvana doku-bara Happy Holidays, Army of the Night. As IGA mentioned, the team is working on fine-tuning enemy placement throughout the game. This polishing effort is a very important and delicate step. Moving the spawn point for a creature five steps in either direction or adding an additional creature can have a big impact on the flow of a level. It takes a lot of trial and error to get it ‘just right’ and we want it to be ‘just right’. In order to get to this point a huge amount of work had to be completed. Level layouts, enemies, animations, assets, combat systems, etc. Due to WayForward’s help on crushing bugs, asset creation and lighting, each level is being made to play better and to look better at the same time. There’s still a lot to do, but this is an exciting stage of development as we work towards our 2019 launch. Thanks for your patience! We hope everyone has a great holiday and a Happy New Year. Well... I feel bad for Mac/Linux users. These sure are some bad news. I hope that at least refunds can be offered for those who have no other platform. That'd be the least 505 could do for not being able to keep promises like that. You can't just ask people to buy another platform just for your game that they already helped to finance.
I liked having a glimpse at the office and seeing some of the developers at work. I know, everyone is super busy finishing this game so I have respect and patience. You can do it, keep it up!!

I am glad to see things going forward, and some photos from the team at work. I prefer not to see to much game content at this point, as we will explore all these things when we have the game and it will be more interesting if we haven't seen it already. I like the design of the fish.

Too lazy to patch the demo you ripped the PC controls out of so people could play, now too lazy to finish 2 MAJOR versions? You'd either better be ready for some hell to pay or at least provide refunds for them, because they're going to take it out of you one way or another, especially if they don't have another platform.

Uggg, another cancellation... maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I just got a PS4, I really hope it's out before PS5.

Well, I'm glad there was an update, and I'm glad it wasn't spoiling much in terms of the game itself. It was good to see the team at work, too. I will say that this update gives me the impression that the game (or whatever chunk of it will be released in 2019) is a fair ways away. That being said, I'm not upset. When it was cancelled for the Wii U--despite what people say about that console--that was tough for me (and it still stings a tiny bit), so I know this latest round of cancellations is going to be tough on others. But at the end of the day, after waiting this long, I just want the game to be great. The second demo showed me it had the potential to live up to expectations with a lot of extra polish, and that's what the team has been doing. So, I just wish them luck and encourage them to keep at it, even as complaints will logically pile up. Creative work is not a smooth business, especially impactful creative work.
As a fun and intriguing aside... ReySol mentioned the new enemy, and this new fish enemy sort of reminds me of the Ocean Stage boss of WayForward's own Contra 4. Nintendo Power ran the initial design sketch for that back in August 2007. I wonder if WayForward helped on this new design for Bloodstained?
Or maybe it's a reference to the [still-underrated] Castlevania 64 era, and its Death fight?
Uggg, another cancellation... maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I just got a PS4, I really hope it's out before PS5. Not long after the Wii U's cancellation (which was still getting new console content at that point), I said there was a possibility this thing could push into the obsolescence of PS4 (and XBOX One) as well. But as I discussed it with others, it was generally agreed that it will probably still come out for PS4 but come to PS5, as well, down the line. It's just a matter of whether or not this affects market sales beyond the Kickstarter base: i.e. a potentially end-of-life PS4 title versus "next-gen" launch titles. Whatever happens, I'm hopeful it will all work out in a positive manner.
By the way, XombieMike , I've been away for a bit, and I like the forum snow effect.

Yikes...
While it's good to see that things are going forward in terms of development, it's not good at all to see more platforms getting axed...

I appreciate the honesty. Both good and bad, it's not common to be able to see all the stumbles and triumphs that occur during development.

Awful news, awful update.
While we're removing features left and right, can we remove the weird shoulder patch thing from Miriam's outfit?

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was going to be released in 2017, then 2018, then 2019. The game cancelled it's Wii U version, Vita Version and now MAC and LINUX versions. The game lost Inti Creates and received new teams and developers. I am supporting this game since launch and i still believe it is going to be an awesome game, but i believe it is easy to say they tried something bigger than themselves. Bloodstained reached a major scope and the team perceived they can't reach the quality standard and the scope they want if they didn't start to give up on some stuff. And that's what they are doing. The game versions that was cancelled and the longer time to develop is to achieve the quality standard required for the game. The dev team realized they wanted to do something they can't do it. Please, keep in mind that this does not mean the game will end up being bad. DOOM 2016 was in development hell (something Bloodstained isn't) for YEARS and became a fantastic game when finally released. They finally finished the game, and that's great. The game will be awesome, i'm sure. But they tried to catch a fish bigger than they could. Awful news, awful update. While we're removing features left and right, can we remove the weird shoulder patch thing from Miriam's outfit? The patch is there so her scarf can exist. Miriam's scarf is attached to her shoulders, it isn't wrapped around her neck. The scarf was added to make her easier to see, and that scarf can only exist if the shoulder patch exists, since the scarf is attached there.

Damn, these last few months didn't bear encouraging news at all, for the most part. I don't really know why, but the whole situation has taken a not-so-nice turn; now I must say that yeah, I understand the negativity that people (I hope not too many) are experiencing. I mean, what's next? Other cancellations? :/ Extra modes being axed (actually I'd kinda be happy about that ) It is what it is and I at least hope the team is able to work well, with a good pace, on the project. I'm kinda sad I feel almost indifferent to the game nowadays, which in a way is even worse than me hating it. But yeah, I'll just read some updates and play it when it's out I guess. The relative disinterest has ironically made waiting much easier, even through delays. But I'm not sure how to feel about that. P.S.: the Albedo-style fan art for Dominique is sweet.

Too bad for the Linux / Mac gamers. But yeah, those systems aren't for gaming anyway. (At least not seriously) Cutting them means less time trying to get it to work on those platforms and more time finishing the game.
I do would love to see an actual launch window "2019" is somewhat large.
I can't wait to play it on GoG and Switch (the two systems / platforms I backed for)

Cancelling two undoubtedly niche operating systems as platforms is NOT the same as “getting rid of things left and right”. Yes they also cancelled development for dead platforms like the WiiU and Vita but we also gained one in the form of the very much alive and popular Nintendo Switch. I hate bringing Mighty No 9 but those backers are still waiting on the promised 3DS and Vita ports. I’d rather have them be honest now than lie about it and keep saying it’s coming only to never happen.

As a veteran of many Kickstarter projects in the past, I can tell you that this is perfectly natural. It's easy to maintain a feeling of excitement when the updates are "Big Features!" and frequent requests for community input. Not so easy when each update is basically "we're still working on this." Cut platforms aside, it's not surprising that the game would be pretty low on our radar right now, and it will likely stay that way until the big marketing push near release. Speaking of cut platforms, I will say that this does suck for anyone who uses those as their primary, but probably not as much as some people think. Native OS support would have been fantastic, but pretty much anyone who plays on Linux and related OS is accustomed to playing non-supported games through Wine, so I think they'll be alright. That isn't really an excuse for the developers though, and I hope they've learned from this for future projects. Supporting all available platforms sounds great, but there's a reason it's rare, and it's not just because developers can't be bothered. Being a bit more conservative when announcing platforms and then looking for ways to expand is better than starting with everything and then contracting the list later.

I never saw Linux and Max cancellations coming but I did see WiiU and Vita from light years away. They were needlessly over complicating themselves by promising on two old, not popular platforms that didn’t even support natively the very engine the game was being built on. At least Nintendo fans can move on to the much better and actually popular Switch and like you said Linux and Mac gamers already have their workarounds. As to whatever Vita-only fans are still there who inexplicably only own that portable as their only gaming platform? Yeah those pretty much were screwed. All 12 of them.
