Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has passed away

I was somewhat worried he had been in and out of surgeries and had a somewhat sickly appearance the past year.
 His final public appearance was in Nintendo's 4/1 direct and he had been missing from the public eye since then, sad to see him go I worry for the companies fate now. He was one adamantly trying to keep Nintendo's console business afloat.

A sentiment that I think we all can agree upon, regardless of where your "loyalties" lie with respect to consoles.

My loyalty has always been with Nintendo.  From the days of the console wars with Sega, to the lows of the N64 and Virtual Boy, to the highs of the DS and Wii, I have never shied away from them.  I may have questioned their direction at times and doubted some of their choices, but I never lost faith that in the end things would work out well for them.

This is sad news indeed and I can only hope that they can find a successor that will do right and honorably by his memory and passion for their products.

Though your controller may be worn from extensive use, the cartridge door having a few scars from moments of frustration, and you occasionally gave us the dreaded flashing blue screen you have been a part of us more than long enough that we do not wish it to end, and for far longer than most of us care to admit. Just as a quick breath of life into a cartridge could restore our world to right, your breath of life gave us the cartridges to bring those worlds into being.  But... You have come to the final Game Over and there are no Continues? left.  You have played the game well, but it is time to turn the system off.  Time to press that power button one final time and let the console sleep.  Time to move on to the next great console adventure and allow your old controller its well deserved rest from its long hard fought battle.  Your High Score has set a most impressive, admirable, honorable, and inspiring bar for the rest of us.  May we live up to the challenge you have put before us, and may we not fail to meet it.  Time to go home to the great arcade in the sky my friend.  And may we all join you there one day for the greatest of Smash Bros. tournaments and Earthbound play throughs!

NES and SNES were huge successes, N64 was a moderate success, Gamecube was a low, Wii was a huge success and then Wii U was another low (sales wise).

Iwata worked for Nintendo in the past at hal laboratories working on games like Kirby, Earthbound and the original Smash Bros. He was promoted to the president of Nintendo in 2002.

As I said on another site... what a bitter sweet day. My auntie that I haven't seen in years visits us today only to be greeted by the news that the president of my childhood (It WAS my childhood, playing super nintendo and nes games). I loved the banana thing and while my interest in nintendo games has waned, I still always checked Nintendo and hoped they'd do well.

Rest in Peace Iwata. May you be blessed in the afterlife.

He died because it was too late. The cancer cells had spread too quickly.
