Yeah this keyboard controls issue is really disappointing for me. I don't have a controller so I am just screwed. Not trying to be cheeky, but I would get one. You can get a cheap Chinese-made game pad for around $10-15 USD and if it's not Xinput native, you can use Steam or a wrapper to make it Xinput. While I understand the clamoring of "this is a PC game, it should have keyboard controls!" (and I agree), I'm sure the vast majority of backers to this project did so out of love for a genre that has NEVER been on PC with keyboard controls. Not to mention, you're not "screwed." There are several programs out there that allow you to emulate a joystick with your keyboard. Just keep in mind this game uses the Right-Analog stick for magic aiming. The game is still playable without it, as you can just use a combination of left-direction and jumping to fire that magic, but I believe the "magic door open" requires it, so you'll want to map the right analog to maybe the arrow keys or something for those rare moments. You can still play this, might just have to do a little more work.

I'm honestly stunned at keyboard not being supported at all after so long when it should be enabled by default by the Unreal engine. It's like they deliberately took it away for not reason, not even a matter of not bothering to deal with it, but actually bothering to screw keyboard users over. what the dung?
But yeah, be respectful about it because I want the devs to see the complaints, the number of complaints, and I don't want them to think that the complainers are unhinged jerks who belong in a cage somewhere and hence can be ignored without a guilty conscience.

You can still play this, might just have to do a little more work. I've had SOME luck with a virtual keyboard. Unfortunately, I accidentally mapped right shoulder instead of right trigger for directional spells and now I'm stuck at the cannon because for some reason I can not remap the keys in steam. But regardless of that, I should not have to pay extra money to play a demo correctly just because some of the intended controls were removed for the demo.

Do we have to start calling for refunds to even get them to look again and say 'Maybe we should fix this, it'll only take 5 minutes anyways'? Because at this point, I'm asking in 4 different places why they would gut the PC controls from the E3 demo, why they won't put out a quick fix, and why they have zero respect for people without controllers. We helped fund this project, and to see them spit in our faces like this is abhorrent. They have the time, they have the power, it's not like it's a game breaking superbug that will cause hundreds of hours of rewriting code, it's a bloody map the controls so people can use them issue. Just fix it already, please. Why pick now to screw over a bunch of people? You were so close to having a fantastic launch, stop ruining it for everyone here who doesn't have a bloody controller. That's all we want at this point. We want to play the game too. We want to enjoy the game too. We helped fund this, our voices deserve to be heard. The fix is easy, the fix is quick, the fix is painless. There is zero reason to delay it, yet everybody keeps ignoring the issue. Just put in the E3 demo keyboard controls, and we'd have no problems- those are good enough for the purposes of letting us play, the updated controls can still be added to the final game later. If you can't listen to logic, reason, and your backers, then why should we ever get another one of your products? Honestly, at this point, if you won't fix it, you've lost all respect for me. I'm debating whether or not to call for a refund for now, in the hope you'll see reason. This whole situation is stupid in so many ways, the fact the people who can resolve it will not do so is idiotic, and honestly if they can't respect their own backers enough to fix this one, major issue, why should we stay on with this project?
Basically, I want them to do more than listen. If they're going to pull this stunt, I think we all deserve answers.

Did they gut keyboard controls from the E3 demo? Can anyone confirm that at this year's E3, the demo shown had keyboard controls? The controls in the demo from 2016 were very much "this is what you get out-of-the-box with Unreal engine", so it is likely those were "gutted" a long time ago. More likely, this year's E3 demo was intentionally built with just controller controls to prevent anyone from screwing with keybindings while on display. As for adding in the keyboard controls, unless you have some insight into their development setup and code base, any assumptions about "it will only take 5 minutes" are just that -- assumptions. It would be lovely if someone from the dev team could weigh in on how feasible it is to add the alternative controls into this demo. Then again, when it comes to the trade off between "add features to the demo" and "work on the final game", I hope they choose to work on the final game (those that are able to play right now are finding a number of bugs that should be squashed before launch).
I would be interested in at least getting some information on what is configurable for the keyboard controls. Will all controls be changeable, including movement keys? How is directional casting being handled -- will the direction require separate keys entirely (or even the mouse), or will we have the option of some sort of "aim spell" toggle to switch the movement keys between moving and aiming (e.g., while holding shift the movement keys will aim the spell instead of moving the player)?

The demo is configured only for controllers. The keyboard commands weren't meant to be in this demo. The final version of the game will have keyboard support. Animeeye, this was from a few days back.

The demo is configured only for controllers. The keyboard commands weren't meant to be in this demo. The final version of the game will have keyboard support. And this is what we call lazy programming and is pretty much inexcusable. In case you didn't realize you just released a beta on PC. PC is known for, and try to keep up here, MOUSE AND KEYBOARD. A college intern could have put this into the game in a just an hour or two including testing. Hell, as it is, it is practically already in the game since I can remap a few keys using my keyboard but your company chose to block all but a select few keys to be usable. Forget I said lazy; it was a stupid decision plain and simple. Further, this is vital information you could have given to us before we decided to plunk down money to get into the beta. One of the main reasons I chose to preorder, something I almost never do, was to get in on the beta. Once again I'm reminded why I don't preorder because every time I do I get screwed. I'd like to extend my thanks for wasting my time and bandwidth.

They've just screwed a large base for zero reason and, from what you've said, they had to make a conscious effort to do it. If they are not professional enough to deal with the backlash and anger this causes after moving the original target date back by over a year then they should not have done this in the first place. The decision to remove keyboard support on a PC release is stupid plain and simple. As a computer engineer my manager would have a long talk with me about my ability to remain a computer engineer for such a stupid suggestion and not much rattles him. To quote Gypsybot, "this is their dishwashing liquid and they can soak in it".

The demo is configured only for controllers. The keyboard commands weren't meant to be in this demo. The final version of the game will have keyboard support. Animeeye, this was from a few days back. I've read and been aware of this. This was sort of my point. Keyboard controls were intentionally excluded from this demo, but my question was whether "this demo" only refers to this version released on Steam, or whether "this demo" refers to both the Steam version and the version showsn at this year's E3. It makes a lot of sense to remove keyboard controls from an E3 demo -- there is only going to be one control setup provided, and you want people playing the demo to actually play the game, not spend a lot of time fussing around in key config menus (especially since whoever would play it next would then have to also spend time in the key config menus). Assuming the week delay was just to fix some of the obvious bugs discovered at E3, not add additional content (keyboard controls) into the existing demo, it makes a lot of sense why the Steam version would also be configured only for controllers. Depending on their code base and how the demo was built, adding the keyboard support from the actual game into this demo may have been more difficult than we assume (it may even be that this control menu was intentionally trimmed down to avoid accidentally revealing information about late game abilities).
As for the final version having keyboard support, I'm aware it "will have keyboard support", but there is a significant difference between "has keyboard support" and "has good/adequate keyboard support". I've been hoping that at some point prior to release the devs will share what the keyboard setup will be in order to allow for feedback from us about it.

Oh, I was simply answering the question of did they gut the controls from the e3 demo. One would be able to assume as much from the response Question made to matters, but we won't know more information until after the holiday, most likely.

I would like to share i found a solution! So for everyone using keyboards: install a pad emulator, i tried "x360ce" alpha version 4.7, you just need to throw the file on the Bloodstained's exe's folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Bloodstained Backer Preview) and install the file it will acuse (xinput), then on "Games" tab select the Bloodstained's exe, have both Bloodstained and x360ce selected there. Finally go on the "Controller 1" tab and select "Enable 1 mapped device" and "Enable Xinput state", on the right side select "Add" and select keyboard. After that the binding options should activate, select a key and select "record", then press the keyboard key you want for that pad key... i am not sure if i am doing it right, but it works perfectly, i am trying to remove the game default keys set now and leave only the "controller". Thank you for sharing this method ^^

I like to use my keyboard every now and then and i found it very odd there wasnt any useful keyboard mapping/support, but my experience (and people I know) in this genre has taught me that controller is the best control method.

I really appreciate all info everyone is posting as a workaround for the lack of keyboard support on the demo.
