Haha, guess I should have started a new topic myself instead of replying to the fighting game one

It's not like I'm good at fightning games ._. I'm only average at them. I do have more experience with Melty Blood having played through each version, though I'm not good enough for tourneys or what have you. Really excited for the online gameplay though.

I know right? I even posted something related to that in forum suggestions a while back lol.
Well, I do/did play the game competitively. It's really fun, never got boring. I even bought the Carnival Phantasm season 3 blu-ray to get the real PC copy of Current Code.

I don't like that fighting games become a pattern of learn baiting the enemy into performing unsafe moves, which you then use safe moves to punish. I don't like that whole mind game feel to fighting games. Ultimately that's what all fighting games are, but it doesn't mean I have to be happy about it. There are some I enjoy, DOA, Smash Bros, but when it comes to classic 2D fighting, I think it's too hardcore for me.

Huh, this is a take on fighting games that I haven't seen before. I can see why you would think this way, but it's not necessarily the way they work. Matches in a fighting game are played out ideally with neither player throwing out an unsafe move. That mostly just occurs when a player is fighting someone that he figures will throw out special moves in desperation because the person doing the specials otherwise doesn't grasp how to deal damage. What you're saying can very much be the case when two players are close to the same level of play, but one realizes that by just blocking for a while, eventually he will be able to hurt the other player for doing a random move. Instead, and I admit that this isn't an easy thing, the way this should play out is both sides use things like throws, overheads, cross-ups, fireballs, wake up games or just pokes to do damage instead of a special move wait-and-reply. All those things I listed are safe ways to initiate offense, but all can be countered or dealt with defensively if you're looking for them. The issue is more likely that it is indeed a "hardcore" thing, but it's not purely reads of safe/unsafe moves. Ironically enough, DOA would be the worst for this...or I suppose an exception depending on how you look at it? Technically, almost nothing is unsafe because you can cancel most of what you do into a counter, but if the other person perceives that you're mashing out a counter during your own move or theirs, they can instead throw you. It's like a constant back and forth rock/paper/scissors, so it's kinda funny you would like that more with the mind game aspect being so heavy. I think the game is popular though mostly because the risk/reward of doing things isn't as starkly pointed/clear cut as it is with traditional fighting games, where it's more "I blocked a dragon punch, I get to hurt you a lot now". In DOA, after their initial questionable decsion, you also have to read their next decision to properly deal with it. Killer Instinct is like that too. Smash has the reputation widely of being less hardcore fighting, but that's mostly just because there are so many people that play it casually. That game at its competitive level of play is REALLY HARD. I was looking up proper movement in Smash and it was some of the most technical reading I've done. An entire match seems like a stressful nail-biter to me, but I've not actually played the game at all myself...aside from just jumping around and hitting buttons one time in Brawl. Anyway, Melty Blood is like...well, there are hardly even unsafe moves. You might have a dragon punch/invincible move, but it's not often you have punishable ground specials, reading and jumping over fireballs, not really a climate of "dealing with other guy's special moves"...unless it's navigating special move zoning. Part of the reason the game is this way is because of shielding, but...okay, I'll just stop here lol. I think I've probably already lost people haha.

An entire match seems like a stressful nail-biter to me, but I've not actually played the game at all myself...aside from just jumping around and hitting buttons one time in Brawl. I think I like DOA because of the 3d plane. I can move to the side instead of blocking, and the rock paper scissors aspect makes it easier to gain the upper hand. I've gotten rather good at smash, and I can tell you that it really does get complicated. A lot of matches are nail biters to be sure, down to the wire between victory and defeat, and it all comes down to punishing unsafe moves and habits. The thing with smash though was that I was into it before I even realized what it was about. With Melee I didn't have an online component, and it felt a lot more free. I was the best in the room a lot of the time, without even trying to read the opponent (tournaments were another story entirely). I think the case here is that a bad read doesn't result in half your life bar. The enemy can't combo you into obliteration even if you don't know how to get out of the combo. This creates a situation where I could, and have, learned during the match, and gotten better.

I played 2 versions of Melty Blood. I heard the very first version had an extensive story, but I haven't read it. I'm excited for this and Under Night In-Birth. About time if you ask me.

It is somewhat Castlevania-ish. Vampires, demons, hunters, a "church" organization...the music is pretty good too.
We should have a Melty Bloodstained group.
