A few of us have been talking about forum stuff in Shoutbox and I'd like to explain a little behind the scenes stuff about why we shouldn't push for a few features just yet even though they would be very helpful.
ArtPlay is in a contract for about 6 more months with forums.net before they give us full access all the time to our database. However, I think I can get them to export the database sooner than that and they won't care as long as they are paid.
Exporting the database and importing it into a new system on a server that is owned solely by ArtPlay is in our best interest for many reasons. Not only will we be able to save money, we will be able to use software that is more flexible and expand the functionality of the community based areas of the eventual website.
I've got my eye on WikiTiki for something that can be a forum, Wiki, chat box and more due to it's List of features .
Who knows what we will end up using though? Not I. That will be up to whatever web developer IGA hires.
Because we can't access our database at the moment, we can't include user accounts into an external chat program or run our own in house Wiki like you can imagine we could if you look through the features list of WikiTiki. That's why I think it's just best to keep going like we have been until we have a better idea of who will be making the website, where it will be hosted, and how much of what we have now will transfer over.
ArtPlay owns the database, so I'm sure all of our accounts and forum posts will be preserved in any case. The plugins and stuff will at least need to be tweaked. Anything I've written like the Easter egg or the "I'm interested in this" or the custom smiley faces will be pretty simple.
Anyways, my point in all this is that I want a Wiki and a better chat really badly, but I just have to sit tight. I've tried the other chat system that didn't include our user accounts and decided it was not worth asking new users to keep up with two log ins or have multiple user names. I would support an external Wiki, but because I know we may eventually have our own I don't bother to.
If someone wants to experiment with me that has a server available I would like to export an instance of our database (if I can convince forums.net to do that for me) out and then I'll install WikiTiki on the server and see how importing it goes. That would help us discover what problems will have to be dealt with and if it's super successful we could even abandon forums.net and their limited functionality early. If we did that though, we would still have to face another change when we get a web developer hired by ArtPlay involved.
