So, non-Castlevania and non-gaming music have been mentioned a few times here, so I thought I would explore that more with a topic. I think other people that like Castlevania music should have pretty good taste otherwise, so it could be interesting to see what we like. I recall Mana mentioning metal a while back, so maybe she can share some favorites too! For me, I primarily listen to symphonic, power or classic metal and rock in general. I'm not overly fond of new rock/metal, unless it's more similar to the classics, but every once in a while I'll hear something on satellite radio that isn't bad. Currently, I'm mostly on Within Temptation, as I got into them most recently, but also Nightwish, older Kamelot (Roy Khan 4 life bro), Sonata Arctica, various old power stuff like Stratovarius. Once in a while, I can do things like Rhapsody or Dragonforce, but have to be in a certain mood - it's kinda corny even for me lol. More general rock stuff would be Alice in Chains, Dream Theater, Megadeth, old Queensryche, even Journey and Bon Jovi actually. Amazingly, I'm still not sick of any certain Bon Jovi songs, but as much as I like Journey and Steve Perry's voice, I would change the station on Any Way You Want It just as fast as I would if it was a...Steve Miller, Boston song or something. I'm very picky about classic rock lol, the local stations when I was a kid -really- killed some bands for me I already didn't have a taste for by playing them incessantly. Only a few good ones survived that, like the above and...AC/DC, though I wouldn't mind at all if I never heard Shook Me All Night Long again. When I was a kid up through being a teenager, the progression went like this: Foreigner (not joking. Played their CD on the Saturn, a lot) KISS (lol, my first concert too) Guns n' Roses (lol reunion, sure Axl) Bon Jovi/Journey Metallica ("Fuel" was the first song I got from Napster lool) Queensryche (now we're finding more obscure things! Too bad Geoff Tate became a moron!) Dream Theater (oh wow I am artsy and deep now) Power/symphonic metal because Guilty Gear combo videos, also how I found SSH Hmm, I think that's a pretty good overview for me. I do like some Celtic-y music, too, and Johnny Cash, motown stuff, Prince, MJ, Weird Al, um...other things that are old, apparently. For something more game-related, there was also a period recently in the shoutbox where we were posting songs that we used for alarms. I'd like to see those, too, even if they're game music - mine certainly are lol. I've been using the Wild Arms 3 English opening for a long time, but I also have some Valkyrie Profile, Ace Attorney, Arcana Heart and Metal Gear stuff on there.

I guess you could say my musical experience has been one of sine wave on the time line of exponentially increasing value.... Of sorts... So I started off listening to power ballads and hair metal of the late 80s. When it came to artists and song titles I couldn't remember them to save my life. I still can't to this day to a certain extent. But you play me just about any song that would have been on the radio in that time frame and I know the song, just not what it's called or who did it. As I got a little older I started to get into EARLY rap/hip-hop. i.e. PRE-LL Cool Jay days. But no sooner got into it and fell back out in favor of older music. Namely 50's and 60's rock. And Motown was my jam for quite some time! Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Coasters, The Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, and a whole host of artists who's names escape me at the moment. For a number of years the same radio station that my folks listened to (who were both born in 1946) was the one I listened to. Then that one disappeared and I followed them to a station that played 60's and 70's music. I didn't like it as much at the time, but still enjoyed it. After that in the early 90's my father got on a bit of a country kick and unfortunately so did the driver of the school bus I rode. My dad got off of country in the late 90's but the bus driver never did... But back in the early 90's the SNES came out and i fell in love with the music from that. I still continued to listen to 50's, 60's, and 70's music but would occasionally just turn on the SNES and play a game to a certain point and pause it just to listen to the music. After that I had started to get a little bit into big band and a little jazz, but then they came out with the first CD recorders and I was off! I was recording game music and burning CDs of it like a fool. Several years later after gathering quite a collection of video game music I could listen to in my car I had also started getting into classic rock (Aerosmith, AC/DC, Queen, etc.) but at the same time I got very interested in classical music. I started getting LPs and 45s of Strauss, Debusy, Mozart, Haden, Handel, etc. just about anywhere I could. I even bought a few CD collections. Then the end of my highschool days came and I got into modern rock. Linkin Park, Mudvayne, Tantric, Slipknot, Disturbed, Staind, and more were all JUST beginning to really take off in popularity and thats what caught my attention. Then I "rediscoverd" Nine Inch Nails and with that my simultaneous interest in techno and industrial music took off. It wasn't 4-6 years later when Dubstep started to become a thing and I got interested in that as well. More recently I've found myself going back to the music I grew up with to rediscover it now that my memory is in better working order. Bands like Whitesnake, Queensryche, Scorpion, Guns & Roses, L.A. Gunns, Quiet Riot, Skid Row, etc. Also, in the last two years I've been getting into some music of the mid/late 70's as well as getting in celtic music and a variety of other instrumental musics. I still listen to a LOT of rock, some newer bands like OneRepublic, I still listen to a lot of video game music though about half is through OC Remix, I still put on some classical on occasion, and I still crank the techno and NIN when I'm in the mood to move and work. However, I never did recover from all that country music and remain fairly "burnt out"" on it to this day... Though some recent entries in the genre have me coming back around. As far as oddities, I do listen to ICP and I own almost every Weird Al album (Fell in love with Dare To Be Stupid). That's about it for me I think. There are some other details, but unfortunatly I have to run.

jim, that's pretty darn diverse! Pretty interesting progression of what you were into there. I'm with you on SNES music...I was always glad when the game had a sound test. That's not as much of a thing anymore, is it? Speaking of big hair bands, haha yeah...I think it was around my late single digit years and early teens, my brother and I would catch this Friday night radio program called the Big Hair Show, hosted by Dee Snyder. Yeah, that guy. They mostly played the same stuff every week, but once in a while we'd hear something new. Couldn't really catch all that much of the big hair bands on the radio otherwise aside from the occasional hits. I was into that stuff a bit for a while. Mostly what I've taken from that era is like Dio, Dokken, Tesla...hm, a few other scattered songs I still get into. I like the Scorpions a good bit still, their London Philharmonic/live symphony CD was actually really good. That was a phase bands were going through in the early 2000s after Metallica did S&M, lol. I love Weird Al, I need to check out his newer things. I haven't really caught up much since Running With Scissors, and that must be like 15 years old now. I had a very similar situation with my parents when it came to motown. I appreciate the soulful/bluesy aspects of rock a lot, too. When you can feel the emotion in a solo, that's the good stuff. Have you heard much of Sixto Sounds' stuff on OCRemix/Dwelling of Duels? That guy has some sick playing. Lastly, country...egh. I could never get into it myself, despite living in one of the most rural places ever. Our county didn't even have a Wal Mart lol. Like I said, I can get into Cash, but that's mostly it...and he is not typical country anyway.

Actually, funny thing is I got into "European Rock" a few years back.. Got into Nightwish right after the singer change from Tarja and I've been listening to Within Temptation for a couple years now. I started listing to them when The Heart Of Everything was their new album. Even more interesting is that Nightwish is what got me into following Volbeat. I got a chance to see Nightwish tour for Dark Passion Play and Volbeat was the opener for them. They had just put out Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood. Of course with those bands I also listen to Lacuna Coil as well as some others. When it comes to the music of 80's there was a local radio station called Z93 (their frequency was 93.9) and "new" music was the only thing they played. Every now and then they'd play some stuff from the previous 3-7ish years if it was still popular but of course in the 80's they played AC/DC, Scorpions, White Snake, Ozzy, Alice Cooper, Journey, Rush, Iron Maiden, Queen, Def Lepperd, and all those bands. Every now and then they'd throw in some pop like some Bowie or Todo or whatever was topping the charts recently. But I used to listen to the radio darn near constantly as a kid. If it wasn't that, I was listening to vinyl. By the time the mid to late 90's rolled around the station pretty much was only playing rap and hip-hop and maybe once every 20-40 songs they'd throw in some Pearl Jam, or Soundgarden just so they could still say they play all current music. Weird Al has some great new music. The newest album I own is Straight Outta Linwood. If you get a chance Take a listen to these two videos, though you've probably heard the first. I found the second particularly hilarious given that it's in the style of Crosby, Still, and Nash as well as my experience with the business world. Of course this one was funny too when I first heard it. But it was even more hilarious when I saw the video for it

I think i'll just quickly name some bands I listen to, I don't delve too much into music though. I don't really buy albums or keep up with bands or anything.
Nightwish Epica Rammstein Dimmu Borgir Deathstars Delain Xandria Slipknot Metallica Poets of the Fall Avenged Sevenfold
