So, in lieu of a new job (huzzah, payday!), I am now on the hunt to get the best PC (laptop preferred) for my money. In this case, I thought to turn to the army of the night. I need one that will help me through daily functions in an office setting , but still be able to keep me gaming for a good decade or more.
That being said... What does your rig of dreams look like? What do you consider to be a fair deal for a new laptop? Should I get one custom built, or should I get one that's pre-built with high end specs?

I bought a really good used custom PC from a dude on eBay several years ago now. It was a great deal, just didn't have a genuine copy of Windows lol. So I'm on 7 and get that "you may be a victim of..." message all the time. One of these days, I'll just buy 10 and be done with that. I believe I asked the dude about it and he was all like 'oh that's weird huh".
But all in all, I would certainly do that again. I've had very little trouble with the thing.

If you decide to go the desktop route, let me know and give me a budget to work with. I'll go online and put a build together for you That is, if you're okay with building your own PC. You can save alot of money doing it that way!

You can save alot of money doing it that way! I don't mind a desktop. I can always pick up a tablet for use on the go, and for work. (though, that would set me back a good bit extra, I'd think) How about... $800 - $1000? It would take me about two months or so to gather those funds, but it's certainly within reason. I don't imagine that the market would fluctuate all that much. What can I do with that? Or do you think that would be considered overkill?

If you already have a monitor you've cut into your budget quite a bit. $800 - $1000 is plenty for a modern gaming computer. It won't get you top of the line, but it'll let you play any game that's out there while maintaining your sanity.
Neither route is guaranteed to keep you gaming in 10 years, especially with certain technology, that is hopefully around the corner. A laptop will probably not last 10 years, and a desktop will probably just feel too old by the time, no matter what you get.

If you go desktop and plan a bit you could always reuse parts for frankenpc v2 like case, drives, hdd, fans, power supply sometimes, cables, already have monitor, etc, and concentrate more money next time on the main bits like the mb gpu and ram
When you go laptop you do have portability but you lose almost all customization past adding more ram and changing hdd cause of how packed they are

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but I don't think any gaming laptop will last more than 5 or 6 years without being vastly underpowered. Let alone a decade at the pace tech is going right now.
Then again, that will depend on what kinds of games you play. I built a desktop myself and I honestly can't recommend it enough.

maybe not vastly underpowered if you know what youre doing, but yeah, every 5-6 years the games will upgrade their directx or engine and that in turn will force the new gen of gpus and cpus to the forefront, i just got sf5 and its the first game the recommended settings are low on

Now, just for a little history, I did not get all of that all at once. I started with just the case, cpu, cpu cooler, ram, psu, mother board, the two hard drives, mouse, dvd drive, and one monitor a year ago. Part of it was a Christmas present to my self, and part was bought with my tax refund money. (I claim 0 on my taxes every year so I usually get a pretty healthy return) Later I got a hold of an old GTX 260 GPU that I used for quite a while. In September I moved and with that came the new router. Here this past January [late Christmas present for myself] I upgraded to the dual GTX970 cards, and got the other two monitors with the first two monitor arms (the Tall pole and Dual stacking arms) Then this week I used some of my tax money to do what I think is going to be my final upgrade beyond maybe adding another HDD or two... That's when I finally dropped the money for the 4k display and another arm to mount it. I will say this. It was a REAL challenge to get those two GPUs with their separate water coolers mounted in my case, but with everything I now have I'm hoping I won't be in "desperate" need of an upgrade for another ten years or so. (The last desktop I built was in 2001. I still have it and it still runs. )
