this makes sense, in some cases the story can be made more impactful through a more faithful translation or making the cutscenes as in engine as possible so that its more immersive, compounding on the little details in the ff7 world that couldnt be included in the original due to graphics constraints, i get that the more realistic grapics may cause issues with some of the more wacky and lighthearted moments (as much as i want it in can you imagine the difficulty of keeping the dolphin scene as wacky as it actually is without destroying the 'oh hey, now clouds riding a dolphin up a tower, cool' vibe in the original?), as long as they arent changing things just cause or to appease the insane parts of the internet (or lucasing it up), im all for it, and i think they could take this to a level of epic that id be willing to place alongside the original

Time was absorbed by Zelda, but some info came out. www.siliconera.com/2017/03/07/final-fantasy-vii-remakes-battles-wont-command-based-action-based/"The above is a look at a gameplay screenshot that was revealed at MAGIC 2017 last month. It shows Cloud taking cover from fire, but Nomura says while there may be some maps that allows you to take such actions, it won’t be a necessity. This screenshot was mostly to show that it is seamless and there are various actions you’ll get to take according to the areas." - in relation to the last image posted with Cloud taking cover behind a metal box. "Again, the Guard Scorpion’s map will have parts that are destructible, and the battle will be a flashy one that consists of numerous attacks that weren’t in the original version. Nomura says that if you look closely, you can even see a bunch of missiles being launched in the Guard Scorpion fight." In other words there will be destructible environments and environment based actions even in the middle of combat. www.siliconera.com/2017/03/09/nomura-final-fantasy-vii-remake-kingdom-hearts-iii-clouds-design-never/"We’ll have to talk about the ATB and skill on another occasion. As for Materia, we can say that it’s something like a skill. It’s different from magic, and you can use it when a Materia that has effects that are usable in battle are set." "Rather than just settling with a scaffold, the battle will take advantage of its space and the map’s characteristics, where you’ll get to switch between Cloud and Barret in the fight. For example, when there are enemies that are in places that can’t be reached by Cloud’s sword, it’ll be more effective to switch to Barret, so there’s a bit of strategy at play there. The Guard Scorpion also changes its mode during battle, and it’ll also show some behavior that wasn’t in the original version. You might have gotten an idea for that by seeing missiles falling down in the screenshot. It’s shaping up to be a very flashy battle." "While I can’t say much in detail about this now, gunners will have elements that are characteristic to gunners." Some more information about Materia and Barret. I'm guessing 'Magic' is its own command and Materia will be things like Deathblow and Steal. Or perhaps it's a sub-menu to toggle modifier Materia's like Cover, Counter, or All. The UI isn't complete and the FFXV UI changed numerous times over development, but I expect the FFVIIR UI won't change that much, personally speaking.

So, some changes.
Square Enix is seeking core staff for the development of Final Fantasy VII Remake!!!
Just kidding.
Also Cyber Connect 2 is fired.
Everything we've seen up till now is not indicative of the final product.
"Part 1" (assuming it's still in parts) could come out as late as 2021, or perhaps even later.

It's been quite a long time since the last update, but we finally have one, although it's not very exciting. Having worked on the entire XIII series in various programming roles and XIV, as well as being the project leader for Mobius Final Fantasy, I have some amount of confidence in this decision. I personally like the XIII games, and play XIV to death, and I tried Mobius and while it's mobile nature wasn't for me, it did seem like a solid game. Nomura will continue to work on the game, but due to his time being taken up by other titles will have Naoki Hamaguchi as his co director in order to develop the game properly. Of course this announcement makes it seem that FF7 Remake is even further off than what I imagined, but I do feel like it spells good news for the actual products quality itself.

Is it just me, or is that definitely not Steve Burton as Cloud?

@autumn That's probably not George Newbern as Sephiroth, either.

It probably is Steve Burton. People wanted a younger sounding Cloud, and this is likely him, just using his voice a little differently than usual.
They'd have no reason to replace George Newbern I would think. Maybe they just made him use a little more range, since we'll be hearing Sephiroth a whole lot more than we're used to.

Gosh, that makes me excited. It's a bummer how Cloud became this really dour character in everything after FFVII, which retroactively colored a lot of folks' perception of him. I'm glad that they're seemingly making it a priority to make sure all that doesn't seep into the remake. If that really is Steve Burton, I'm impressed. I'm so used to hearing his voice in dour mode, I didn't realize it could go any other way.

I believe it was stated in an article from a couple years ago that their voice actors are indeed the returning Steve Burton & George Newbern... and yeah, sure, their voices could have more range than previously expected, but I think I'll wait to see some re-confirmation of voice actors.
I'm sure it'll be refreshing to hear Cloud with a relatively cheerier tone to his voice.

This looks very promising. Final Fantasy VII is one of those big games I missed out on. I was late to the PlayStation, as I was focused on the N64 at the time, and I just never got around to playing it. I've always liked the art direction and tone of this entry, and have sadly been spoiled about a good number of things in the process, but I've never been a huge turn-based-battle person. (I've maybe completed four games that rely on such a system.) So, I'm hoping this update will be the perfect compromise/entry point for me without it ruining the core of the game experience. I also really thought Final Fantasy VIII looked cool, but I also missed out on it. I played the demo of Final Fantasy X and thought it was all right, but its aesthetic and world didn't appeal to me as much as VII and VIII. It feels like the "cool" factor for video games never surpassed the 90s, where you had this great conceptual balance between edginess and beauty. These days it's usually too much of one or the other, it seems.
