Hm, yeah it was "not a JRPG", but something not seen for a while that has RPG elements.
So that makes me think of things like
Alundra
Beyond/Legend of Oasis (THIS)
Crystalis
Brave Fencer Musashi?
Those all fit the bill of being relatively successful Japanese action RPGs that haven't been seen lately...that I can think of.
