In the latest Ask Iga, he wanted our feedback for how we would prefer to see the story told through anime or CGI. The focus was on the end game story, but could apply at the beginning of the games or at special parts throughout the plot.
Prerendered is like the castle shot at the beginning of SotN (where it was missing textures).
Game engine animation is like when Alucard ran into Maria and the game simply stays in it's current mode of animation to tell the story. Of course with Bloodstained we have 3D capabilities that could be more robust with camera work.

I voted Other. I personally would like both Game Engine Real Time Animation AND Anime style cut scenes. I mean in SotN like when Alucard runs into Death, Maria, and Richter for the first time Anime scenes would have been nice, but for subsequent encounters in game animations would be just fine and more fitting.
Kind of like for (relatively) quick interactions (meeting a boss, quick exchange with a character) in game animations is great because it helps to not break up the gameplay and imagery.
But for MAJOR exchanges (fight with Gebel, First ariving at the castle, first time meeting other characters, the endings!) having anime scenes would be awesome!!! On the subject of anime style cut scenes, it would HAVE to be done in a style like that of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust! And you'd have to be careful to make sure the anime cut scene matches the in game environment. Otherwise you'll end up with a game that looks like it was made from an anime move (dis-jointed).

I voted anime cutscenes. Can't agree with using VHD as inspiration though. I love that movie, but I'm not so hot on the Ninja Scroll-esque character art used for pretty much all the humans. My personal preference would be for ufotable or Wit Studio just because they are both great at action animation, but they are pretty busy with Fate/Stay Night and Attack on Titan respectively.

Considering the kind of graphic style they're going for already, I would actually love for them to try out faux 2D cut scenes. If you watch any of the cut scenes in some of the newer 3D anime games, for example, they look phenomenal.
I pretty much have to defer to the Naruto games at this point. Whether you're a fan or not, their games are visually stunning, and virtually surpass the actual show's animation.

Game engine real time animation
I'm a sucker for these, if only because of the fact as this is a 2.5D game, with 3D models, alternate costumes could be a thing. And if there are alternate costumes, I want them to show up in cutscens

In this kind of games atmosphere is one of the main characters. No matter how good and close to in-game looks anime could possibly be it could create too big of a gap between gameplay and storytelling. It would snatch you from one world (you spent hours exploring) and put you into completely different one. It would kill the atmosphere. Anime worked good with older games that had dated graphics, but we’re talking about Unreal Engine 4 here. Engine is already has everything you possibly need to create awesome cutscenes without damaging the atmosphere. My vote is for in-game engine cutscenes.

I say why not both? For instance, in terms of the anime cutscenes, have them drawn in the actual art style used in the game for the more plot-relevant moments? As for other scenes, why not use in-game animation, much like in SOTN?

I'm unsure what I would want here. I suppose I can say in-game engine scenes.

I think the in game graphics better keeps the pace and all around submersion in game... but I am not adverse to having an anime intro or ending. but to tell the story I believe the in game graphics are needed to keep us from braking the pacing of the story.
I mean if you were watching a movie/anime/show/etc and every time something big or important happens the entire look of the changes? like if it was anime it changed to live-action or if it was live action it suddenly changed to CG... I feel more often than not it would take away from the story. mind you, not inducing those times when something like that is done right (though it is rarely ever done right)

I would like to see the team use a shader like in Guilty Gear Xrd. The cut scenes during super moves and instant kills are phenomenally close to anime. Using models and a shader, with just a camera angle change, will cut down on any time spent doing hand drawn anime cut-scenes, but leave us with something of the same quality. If you haven't seen this is action, youtube now.
This would also solve the issue of cutscenes breaking the immersion.

I think a good example of where the animated cutscenes weren't "intrusive" is, IMO, Xenogears. Technology was a bit different back then, so they were able to achieve a lot more detail via the animated cutscenes than they could via the in-game engine.
if they can pull something similar off with the in-game engine now, perfect. Otherwise, i'm not against animated scenes as long as they're done _well_

Dam you whisperingid just agree with me!!!!!!!!
but really, I agree (at least with Xenogears) for some reason (I think the in-game graphics were just so... (lets just say not perfect) that the anime cut scenes were a welcome distraction. but it's weird I like the graphics overall just not for the story lol.
the in game graphics of Bloodstained as far as I can tell will look awesome to begin with. so my vote still goes for in-game graphics.

2d anime scenes would contrast too much with the now completely 3D rendered characters and background. Makes more sense use the engine itself or prerendered.

I know what I certainly do NOT want to see. There are some great games like Child of Light and Dust that whenever you enter a conversation it displays a totally different graphic style. It goes from looking awesome like this: To looking very cartoon like this: I would rather quick conversations like that be handled by the camera zooming in on who is speaking. Guacamelee does it some times:

As XombieMike said, it could create a pretty strange contrast, so i am into the team who thinks it is better to use the realtime engine itself. Some CG may be welcome if it is on the opening and endings, but not in the middle of the game everytime you interact with another character.

Well, what if the in-game engine was used for most cutscenes like in SOTN, but for the very important scenes as well as the opening and ending, it'd be animated?
And by very important, I'm talking events too epic for the in-game engine.

And by very important, I'm talking events too epic for the in-game engine. This seems like the best mix. In-game cut scenes are fine if you are overly worried about breaking the immersion. But to me there is something far more rewarding when I watch an awesome fight scene that has been animated. When I see a cutscene that's anime my initial thought is "Dayum! Sh*t is about to go down!". Then I get all hyped and nerdgasm all over the game.
