Not really surprised. I own a vita but there isn't anything to play on it that justifies buying one imo, I just use it to play my ps1 games. I do wonder if this is one of those things where they are just planning to ditch the name Vita and announce something brand new that is essentially a Vita 2.

Yep, no surprise there. Been obvious for a looong time that Sony got burned, hard on vita and won't make another handheld. Kind of a shame, for me it was a very nice buy... but then I never owned PS1, PS3 or PSP so ports of games from these systems were a very, very nice thing for me.

Not surprised, but it's a bit of a shame the Vita went belly-up. I've heard nothing but good things about the Vita as a piece of hardware and it was home to a lot of more obscure/niche titles. Unfortunately, I can count the actual number of people I know who own one on one hand.

As others have said, truly a shame, but not at all surprising. I -am- surprised at how candid he is. Still, it's nice to know that someone at Sony 'gets' why Vita and handheld systems in general are important--mobile games simply can't offer the same level of quality as a system with stable hardware and traditional controls. I'm also happy that he seems open to the possibility of a Vita successor down the road, provided the market will support it. Perhaps once the mobile game industry goes bust, people will be ready for a new portable system and Sony will deliver.
Until that hypothetical day comes, however, I'll keep enjoying my Vita to the fullest, and supporting any developer who supports the system. I'll also continue playing my 3DS in case there doesn't end up being a proper handheld successor to that system, and I'll keep buying and playing portable games from all console generations until the day when companies decide to release new portable consoles.
Viva la Vita! Long live portables!

Sad, I love my vita... I thought the 3ds would be a smarter buy and I got it first, and I adore it, but to my surprise I actually use my vita even more. It's great for niche games, but it also has some legitimately good games that are less than typical niche-style. such as Ys4, Dragon's crown, gravity rush, etc...Phantasy star nova would also count if bloody sega would localize it.. eff... I'm thinking of importing it and playing it as is.
All those claims that the vita has no good games are just so wrong on so many levels.

Dang, that's a shame, though now I can't help but feel a little grateful I didn't buy a Vita myself...

I tend to view news like this with a bit of trepidation. It's been pretty clear that the industry is adapting to the combination of increasing costs for big titles and the proliferation of mobile platforms (and by extension, target audience). As masterlibrarian says, perhaps the mobile video game industry goes bust at some point. I just hope they don't take any brands I love, if that happens....!

They said they weren't making a vita 2 anytime soon, not that all vita support will end, not sure why you should be grateful for that.
Different people have different tastes, so I admit it's possible people wouldn't benefit from having a vita, but I do think more people would like it than they think, I sure am... Only reason why I got mine was because 120 bucks for one brand new was a really good deal (canadian currency mind you), but if I spent 200 it would still have been totally worth it (for me).
I too can totally see why sony wont be making a 2nd though. It clearly isn't very successful from a sales standpoint, but I think the biggest reason why is the whole 'it has no games' misconception. Truly baffling to me how so many people already have ps4s and xbones which have a small fraction in comparison.

On the bright side you will be able to no doubt get Nintendo's next handheld they have defied logic and are still doing quite well.

The Vita is an awesome piece of technology in the handheld arena, I love mine and use it daily. Yeah this news is not shocking at all considering how they pretty much left it to die with first party support.
I will say it's probably the best handheld I've ever used personally. It's got just enough power to make some console quality experiences(see Killzone Merc). Now, if they could only offer ALL the ps1/psp games on the Vita PSN and maybe port some ps2 classics as well... ^_^
Bonus Level: Just think about portable SMT ps2 games. Think. About. It. Mmmmm.
