Aka the Castlevania Mobile game. It's out in Canada for Android and IOS. If you are non-Canadian and have Android you can download the .apk and run it just fine.
I've been enjoying it so far. What are your thoughts?

What are your thoughts? Unfortunately I'm running on an iPhone in the US, so can't play it just yet. What's good about it? Unfortunately from the YouTube videos it doesn't look fun to me, but the visuals are amazing.

What are your thoughts? Unfortunately I'm running on an iPhone in the US, so can't play it just yet. What's good about it? Unfortunately from the YouTube videos it doesn't look fun to me, but the visuals are amazing. Gameplay is a straightforward linear platformer with combo based combat. While the platforming is fairly basic, the combat is actually quite fun and has a surprising amount of space for and experimentation despite the very limited toolset you have. Each character feels distinct and have their own way of playing. Simon has reach, but fairly weak combo potential, Maria can move and attack but doesn't have much in the way of combos, Charlotte is pure ranged, Alucard is balanced, and Shanoa has low reach but crazy combos. What makes the combat really fun is what they did with the slide, making it basically cancel everything and give it a niche in combat, guardbreaking. Enemy variety is a bit limited but there's enough for a decent challenge. Game is also pretty generous when it comes to giving out stuff so that helps. Game is a bit of a grindfest though with a few balancing issues and if you don't level equipment you're going to have a bad time, but there's no challenge in the game that you can't beat if you are skilled enough.

It's cool how the gameplay seems to be skill-based enough that it's feasible to clear without being too expensive/long of a grind to level everything, but I think that's probably where the time limit comes in. At some point, even if you're playing at highest level possible with no damage, you're not going to be able to dps enough to actually clear stages before time's over. I ran into this with Dragon's Crown, which for some reason itself had a pain in the ass time limit on bosses (not as much with HD), though that was more of a problem in multiplayer when the other person wasn't doing enough.
I'm aware HD had the same thing, but it's different when it's likely that later-game meaningful upgrades would be the paid ones. I imagine time limits aren't even a consideration until the final 10% of the content and post-story raid stuff they add so that they got you comfortable enough leading up to it thinking "well, I've put so much time into this already, I may as well spend *some* money here so I can even finish this damn stage...", and then some more money afterward, again, etc. If you've played an until-then free to play game for 200 hours and you have to spend "just" $10 to get over one hurdle, sure - and again after that, and so on. That's probably how it ends up working for most players who stick around.
So that said, it would seem from your description that Shanoa would be the best F2P character if she has the best combos (assuming then the highest dps) + highest skill ceiling, you won't have the timer to worry about as often late game if you can eke out optimal gameplay with her. Whether that's worth doing or not to you depends - and I imagine it'll be "possible" to clear content F2P by a 324380994 hour grind, lol.
What's also interesting is the matter of controls. I can't say for sure since I haven't played it at all, but I would think that people use gamepads would have some advantage over touch players. The slide cancel tech you're talking about isn't something I can picture being easily done with taps, not to mention just real time gameplay in general at the higher levels - "oops, I touched the screen at the wrong spot at the wrong time once, so I lost at this level at the 19:48 mark of a 20 minute timer - playing F2P trying to do my optimal DPS" lmao. Not having perfect execution, the "beat the clock" game you're playing likely becomes a lot harder or impossible.

Yeah, so I would definitely rather have limited continues.

It looks like GoS has been taken down on the Japanese app stores. Let me know if anybody hears anything more about this.

Oh my understanding was that it was Japan + Canada, but instead it was just Canada? That's pretty odd...either way, I'm asking around for some more confirmation/info. This started from some Japanese/LATAM accounts talking about it, so there may be some language confusion. It's entirely possible I guess that the JP guy was just like "it isn't out still " and we're interpreting that as it was there before but removed edit: Yo lai I just heard back from who told me about this (who also speaks Spanish) and the account above misunderstood. You're right, nothing has changed. That's good news

I was waiting to try it when it would finally have a full release, but...not even going that far, I guess. Didn't perform to their expectations in Canada-only? Rrrrright. Konami always with the bad decisions

This is sad. A shame really.
Konami or not, this game brought life to some of the best characters that IGA has created, and i never got to play the game. i would be lying if i said i wasn't interested.
Knowing that Konami does what Konami does, perhaps this is for the best. With this game out of the stores, Castlevania franchise will go back to its coffin where it should stay until Konami sells the IP or hires a competent team to make a competent game. Silly of me to think that could happen.

Nothing from Konami surprises me anymore. I was pumped for the new TurboGraphx 16 mini but majority of ROMs included are exclusively in Japanese. Those that are localized are primarily shot-em-ups. They just can't seem to do anything right.

This is a shame. Would have loved to give the game a try on steam or consoles since it actually looks more fun than the Contra they put out on consoles a while ago.
They should have made the Switch the game's primary platform and then at a later date ported to PC, other consoles, Mobile, etc.
Considering where Konami's at right now, the best thing they could do is outsource game development of their IPs to Way Forward with the Switch as primary platform.

Just heard the news that they're shutting this game down. I have an equal mixture of surprise and disappointment. I was never excited by the idea of a mobile game, but it made me think that maybe Konami was giving the IP a chance to come back. What was all that talk of Castlevania having a new producer with the Castlevania Collection all about? Between Smash Bros, the Collection, Grimoire, the Netflix series, and Bloodstained's success, I naively thought that we'd be seeing a Castlevania revival before too long. I'm kind of seeing Konami doesn't have the will to do it, though. And I'm not sure a lot of companies know what to do with it aside from trying to copy other IPs, which is even more disappointing. With all due respect, Dark Souls: Castlevania Edition or God of War: Castlevania Edition or Final Fantasy XV: Castlevania Edition aren't what I'd be looking for.

Konami has fooled themselves into believing that Castlevania: Castlevania Edition isn't what people would buy.
They've seen Bloodstained essentially do that, but probably are not interested in such a risk themselves. Risk is probably the dirtiest 4-letter word to those guys - even a mobile microtransactions game only launched in Canada scared them off. Re-releasing stuff is the safest, easiest bet that's highest on return of investment.
I honestly still believe that the new producer wants to do good things, and has his heart in the right place, but what they allow him to do vs not isn't his choice. Same as happened with Igarashi himself.
