I am so incredibly excited for the release of Bloodstained, but there is one thing that has been on my mind lately: How would someone go about limiting grinding while playing the game? In other games this could be an easy task (for example, in a Pokemon game you could just use a rule like "don't knock out any wild Pokemon"), but for the Igavanias it's more complex.
Now, obviously the Igavania games aren't really dependent on having a high level to win, unlike strategy RPGs, but level does still play a significant role. I know that you *could* get through each and every Igavania game without gaining a single level, but that would make some bosses extremely unforgiving and time consuming. This is not what I'm looking for in a game.
Understandably some of you will want to respond with "just don't grind, then!", and will encourage me to just not go out of my way to defeat enemies in order to gain more levels. I appreciate your advice, but this is not what I'm looking for either. It's not that I want to know how to not be over-levelled, because the answer to that is indeed just to never go out of my way to grind. What I want to know is if you guys have any ideas on how to come up with *a rule* that would result in the player not being able to grind at all.
For example, such a rule could be "You may only kill one of each enemy you encounter, and not those who respawn when you re-enter a room".
The above suggestion has a problem though. Keeping track of it would be almost impossible, and also make backtracking very annoying since you couldn't kill anything. That's why I'm asking you all for help and fresh thoughts! Any and all suggestions are very welcome and appreciated!
tl;dr: Please bring your ideas for a rule that would prevent the player from grinding for levels!

Strategy RPGs don't require grinding if the game is well balanced. This is especially true for Fire Emblem and I have played through Super Robot Wars without ever upgrading unit, use chips, let any use die and on one run without spirits. If you are talking about Disgaea, the whole theme is grind. Also consider say FF12's weakmode. I think equipments are more important in this game and item drop rate seems fine especially considering luck is a stats. Weapon and Spell damage also scale with level only linearly, so even on a low level run you have options to damage enemies. Honestly grinded stats cannot compare to the broken beast that is the Alucard Shield.

My download isn't quite done yet, but I'm going to play through on Nightmare from the start to circumvent the issue. I tend to religiously kill everything I see in games like this hoping for nifty tidbits to drop, so grinding is practically unavoidable for me.
Ok, reporting in after playing a while: You might particularly like Nightmare mode. It's not just harder, enemies give no exp and you have to strengthen yourself through shards and equipment, and keep a sharp eye on the patterns of attacks to avoid getting hit. I thoroughly recommend it if you want to avoid level-ups letting you overpower everything.

Is it just that the enemies give no exp, or are there other things unique to Nightmare Mode? I am also slightly worried that some bosses will be too tough without having at least some levels, and will take forever to take down...

No exp at all, level 1 forever. If there's anything else special about it, I don't know. But, you can still get stat boosts from food/shards/gear/HP+MP Ups, so it's not all bad. Funnily enough the hardest part I had to deal with is clearing the intro, since all you have to work with is starter gear(and a Dullahammer helmet if one drops for you). You could get around this a bit by using one of the special names to start with a weapon(I think they're all 15 attack power, just a bit better than what's on the ship). Don't be shy about farming more shards to increase rank so the attacks will be stronger. To that end it might actually have the opposite problem; now to increase your chances of survival, you're going to want to grind for shards and better gear. It's kind of interesting looking at all the interlocking systems of character progression and the terrain of each room + the enemies in it. Even if Nightmare is an "extra" sort of mode, the game was very clearly built with it in mind.

That's very interesting... I might go for Nightmare Mode on my first playthrough so I also can experience that! The only worrying thing is the grinding for shards and equipment, as I would prefer to not br able to simply input more time and get better stuff. I suppose removing all ways to gain that kind of an advantage is impossible though.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, in any case! Nightmare Mode sounds super fun!
