I think they were mostly targeting older fan's of the Turtles but didn't want to alienate newer fans either so they probably borrowed artistically from both, this might also be why April isn't in the movie since that would have required them to choose between black, white, older, younger April. Though there is an easter egg directed at her in the movie.

Oh, this is a movie? I was going to ask if this had anything to do with that comic series with batman teaming up with the turtles. (note: I know nothing about comics, but I do like Batman.)
