Normally I'm indifferent to achievements with the exception of a handful of games I truly enjoy and Curse of the Moon belongs to this special, prestigious group. I finally completed the last achievement this morning and was looking at the "global achievement stats" section of Steam. A few stats really took me by surprise:
*Only 77.8% of COTM owners on Steam have completed the first level. That means nearly one out of four players have likely not started or perhaps even installed the game.
*Barely half the users (50.5%) have made it through the midway point (level 4).
*Only 1 in 3 people has seen an ending of any kind (33.7%).
*And last but not least, a mere 4.4% at most have all achievements.
I find these stats puzzling since Curse of the Moon is a great pick-up-and-play game that can be played in short, quick intervals. The game itself isn't long at all and has the simplicity of the NES era while benefiting from modern advancements.
Sorry if this post (and by extension, thread) seems rambling, but it struck me as odd that so many players who own the game have barely played it.

Yea I gotta whole backlog of games that are epicly awesome.... and I havent even started them up yet from way back to my PS3, I seriously have to change that, I do find it puzzling that so few people have finished the game, I'm not really surprised but kinda am at the same time, a good of a game as CotM is it is by no means a difficult game, those that say otherwise I suspect just need to put alil more perseverance to it. The amount of people that have all the trophies dosent surprise me at all though, once you've recurited everyone and done a nightmare run you've really seen the best parts of the game.
Also on a side note, just clicked my 500th wall mac Woohoo

It's an interesting thing indeed. I love casually looking into statistics and those numbers are actually a bit higher than what I've seen across my dozens of PS4 games. Games that have a trophy granted within minutes of starting the game tend to have low 90s for the player base. Games with a strong story tend to have a sudden drop in achievement rate once the intro bit is done and first impressions are out of the way. I've, also, only typically seen about 1/4 of players who own a game, beat it. Better still, only about 1% of the players get all the trophies.

I can personally vouch that one of those players (me) hasn't even touched COTM on Steam because I have it on my Switch and even if I had played it on Steam I wouldn't have all the achievements, or even have played through it. Ultimately, I'm just not one for Classicvania and while I can see why people really like COTM, it's ultimately not my cup of coffee. I played through most of it but got stuck at one point, quit to take a break and just never really felt a big inclination to go back to it. Too much other stuff that is my cup of coffee to play instead.
I'd bet some in those statistics have either issue or both issues as well.

For some reason I always found game stats interesting be it sales figures, console preferences by country, player demographics, etc.
roguedragon05 - I have that problem with my GOG account; too many games but too few minutes to play them. I don't doubt they're good, it's simply a matter of time constraints. By the time I do get around to discovering my "new" great game, it may well be already two to three years old. Hertzila - It never occurred to me that people might have it on multiple systems. That would certainly affect the player base results. You're probably similar to many of those mentioned in the statistic; they enjoyed it somewhat, but it just wasn't their cup of tea. I'll admit I was the same initially; I played the first stage when the game was first released and thought it was alright but only really delved into it over the Christmas break.

This also may include all the console backers who were given temporary Steam codes for CotM - even if that wasn't one of your platform choices, we all got one the day before launch that perhaps only a few ended up really using after activation, or couldn't use it for whatever reason since they actually weren't PC gamers.

Its rare to see a game with a total achievment completion % close to or above 10 so 4.4% sounds about right. I would be part of that 4.4 were it not for the damn Boss Rush trophy. That trophy can go to hell.

Yeah it's a nice game. I beat it once. I'm more about IGAvanias than Classicvania though. I had hype for it but lost all interest when Inti Creates made EU wait for the game. And weeks passed for many to even get the codes.

It's about time you stop with this Nintendo-centric bullshit and accept that maybe, just maybe, a person can be passionate with video games even if he doesn't only play on freaking Nintendo systems.

It happens with a ton of games. After all, as popular as Dark Souls is, how many people who bought it on a sale actually got far at all? I myself have several games sitting on steam that I havent touched, just waiting on a rainy day kind of thing.
COTM is also a little more complex case because plenty of people got copies for free for backing at a certain amount. Whether they actually wanted it or not. There are plenty of fans of the IGA games that DESPISE the games that came before him because they prefer the rpg exploration to classic platforming. How many IGA fans got a game based on the pre-IGA era, even though it was free, and said "eww platforming", and never touched it?

It is my prediction, if it hasn't already happened, that eventually a Steam game will exist that everyone buys because "it was on their list" due to a sale or whatever other reason (it was trending/well thought-of) and yet literally no one has played it. That is the future.

This is actually normal. The trophy rarities on PSN are always low, too. People just don't complete games. I like checking out the stats on sites like www.truetrophies.com/ , since they have stats that only include the people that have entered their ID into the database there, in addition to the standard PSN stats.

I tend to forget that there are fans who prefer one style of Castlevania to another and can't stand the other. I guess I fall into that in which classic and "Iga"-vania are my go-tos and anything else is trash.
I loved Curse of the Moon. The only runs of it I haven't done are the "Neutral Endings", the No power up Ending, and Boss Rush.
I never cared about Steam Achievements or Achievements of any kind...but I can say that I got all the achievements in Assassin's Creed 2, which was so easy I felt insulted. I can't recall a single game on steam that I got all the achievements in. Never saw a point to that. I've only heard stories and even read an article about this one stay at home mom who just collects achievements all day(That was many years ago and they're probably already divorced, LOL).

blueskull Stop. Just...stop. Not only are your comments of no value to this conversation, but they're also awfully annoying. As for the topic, Steam stats are meaningless, specially achievement stats. Many people buy games on impulse and then forget they even exist, I myself am guilty of that. I have about 200 games on Steam, almost half of them are freebies that I got on giveaways or extra stuff from Humble Bundles that I bought because of a single game. So there's about 100 games on my Steam account that I've never even opened, yet Steam take them into account for their stats.
