On DUALSHOCKERS: original link www.dualshockers.com/bloodstained-ritual-of-the-night-has-been-rated-by-the-esrb-still-no-release-date/Transcription below The upcoming "Igavania" game Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has now been rated T for Teen by the ESRB. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has been in development since 2015 when the game’s Kickstarter campaign first began. While the Castlevania spiritual successor was supposed to originally launch in 2018, it seems like we might finally be nearing its release with one new piece of information recently coming to light. Today, it was found that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has now officially been rated by the ESRB. The “Igavania” title has been rated ‘T for Teen’ here in the United States due to things like impaled corpses, blood, and a “topless female boss creature (no discernible nipples).” This rating really shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, but it does finally indicate that Bloodstained may be close to launching. Ratings are typically one of the final steps that come prior to releasing a game, so it seems like Bloodstained is definitely entering the final portion of the development. That being said though, it’s still hard to peg just when the game might arrive specifically. ESRB ratings tend to appear more often than not a few months before a game ends up releasing in full. If I had to wage a guess, I think the likelihood of Bloodstained releasing before the end of June 2019 is a good bet. While Bloodstained is finally planned to release in 2019 though, it has lost some of the platforms it was going to originally come to along the way. Last year, it was announced that the PS Vita version of the game had been canceled alongside its push into 2019. Additionally, just a few weeks back support for Mac and Linux was also announced to be canceled. Luckily, the Nintendo Switch, which has become a platform of choice for many gamers over the past few years, has also been announced to be receiving Bloodstained at launch, so it’s not all bad. As Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night seemingly enters this last push until release, we’ll likely hear more about the game’s specific launch date in the near future. Iga and company have been good about giving frequent updates for Bloodstained over on the Kickstarter page, so I assume we’ll get the official release announcement over there sometime soon. Whenever that does end up happening, we’ll obviously let you know here at DualShockers.
Additional information from me: This is a transcription of ESRB rating on Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, taken from their site: (link: www.esrb.org/ratings/search.aspx?from=home&titleOrPublisher=Bloodstained%3A%20%20Ritual%20of%20the%20Night )
Bloodstained: Ritual of the NightPlatform: Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One Rating Category: T (Teen) Content Descriptors: Blood, Partial Nudity, Violence Other: Users Interact (PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch) Rating Summary: This is an action role-playing game in which players assume the role of Miriam, a cursed orphan who must battle her way through a demon-infested castle. As players traverse side-scrolling environments, they use swords, spears, pistols, and whips to battle fantastical creatures (e.g., harpies; spiked armor; demon-like birds, rodents, dogs) in melee-style combat. In one sequence, players encounter a boss character emerging from a bathtub full of blood; her magic attacks can cause blood to rain down on players and stain the walls and ceilings. Another sequence depicts an impaled corpse, with blood flowing heavily into a large fountain pool. The game also depicts a topless female boss creature (no discernible nipples). That's all folks!

Awesome... it would have been nice to have an "M" rating but most Castlevanias have been T ratings, so I'm good with this... and hopefully we will be playing this game very soon! So hyped!!! (yes, I'm still hyped)

Honestly, I don't think it would have been awesome to be M-rated. I'm pretty sure T was the target from the start.

One of my visions for this game is for today's teenagers to discover it like I did with SotN and the other games. Teens of course still want M games, often more than what's appropriately rated for them, but I'd still love for it to be discovered in that way by a new generation. And when that happens, we have a brighter outlook because of it.

I find ratings to be... unhelpful. Mostly based on NA values. Where nudity and sex is less acceptable than violence, gore, and death.
The ESRB is a decent enough guide for general audiences, other than the previous point of sexuality being a large factor. So for a parent buying a game it covers most aspects required.
Then there is the fact that different people mature at different rates, but that is not something that can be subjected to a ratings system. I am very thankful that my parents were more lenient with what I was allowed to observe. My dad got me into horror films at a young age. When I was a teen, risqué material such as Heavy Metal and the 1977 film Wizards were no longer taboo. My father used to teach at an art school, so we had tons of Art Print Books lying around, such as H. R. Giger's Necronomicon, Roger Dean's Dragon's Dream, stuff by Frank Frazetta, Ralph Bakshi, Chriss Foss and others.
My parents talked to me constantly about everything, I asked many questions and I feel more well adjusted than my peers who were shielded from the absurd extreme. I would never have the interest in things not mainstream if it weren't for them. But I digress.
An ESRB rating doesn't promise much to me. The Smash Brothers series has been all over the place with their ratings. Zone of the Enders got an M rating. Donkey Konga 2 got a T. MK vs DC Universe was a T!? Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies was an M. And beyond that, just because a game has an ESRB rating doesn't mean it will be released.
Then there is the fee to get your game rated increases a company's cost of goods, it puts the pinch on Indie developers. I wonder the cost RotN had to pay, without it could they have offered refunds to Linux/Mac users?
All that said, the ESRB has been a boon to those trying to hold off continual efforts at government restrictions on game content and sales, even if a double edged blade.

I remember Donkey Konga 2 getting a T rating. I believe that was just because of lyrics. Seeing a Phoenix Wright game as M can make sense due to some parts having graphic depictions of violent crime but it's still honestly a bit of a surprise. To me having an ESRB rating means that we are getting close!

This game absolutely did not need an M-rating. T should suffice just like every other Igavania before this (with the exception of both PS2 games which I don’t consider Igavanias anyway).
The best thing about this piece of news is that the launch has to be imminent and the possibility of any further delays diminish with this. Can’t wait.

This is very encouraging news! Unless I'm mistaken, ratings are only given shortly before the game launches. We might get ROTN sooner than we thought.

Update 77 did say they are getting rid of a lot of bugs and typically that is near the end of development.

About the ESRB itself, it is as i said on the chat, it is mostly based on NA values and standards. As a diehard defender of freedom of expression, i usually dislike certain exaggerations of NA culture regarding sexual content. We have lots of examples, specially on STEAM and Google Play, where games that are mostly ecchi, with nothing but boucing breasts or panty shots, may be enough to be blocked or banned, or, when such games get a high rating from ESRB, while, let's say, games like GTA, where you can steal cars, kill innocent people and commit several violent crimes, may get a lower rating and/or not be banned or blocked on services such as STEAM.
That aside, ESRB site and Wikipedia article about it, says this:
"To obtain a rating for a game, a publisher submits a detailed questionnaire and a DVD containing footage of the most graphic and extreme content found in the game to the ESRB, including content related to the game's context, storyline, reward system, unlockable and otherwise "hidden" content, and other elements that may affect its rating. They may also provide printed copies of the game's script and lyrics from songs in the game. The footage is reviewed by a team of at least three raters, who discuss what the most appropriate and "helpful" rating for the game would be, based on the footage and details provided. Raters represent various demographics, including parents, along with casual and "hardcore" gamers".
"When the game is ready for release, the publisher sends copies of the final version of the game to the ESRB, who reviews the game's packaging, and a random number of games they receive are play tested for more thorough review. The ESRB typically posts rating information for new titles on its website 30 days after the rating process is complete; in 2008, in response to incidents where this practice inadvertently leaked information about games that had not yet been announced, the ESRB began to allow publishers to place embargoes on the release of ratings information until a game is officially announced."
"In April 2011, the ESRB introduced its Short Form, a free streamlined, automated process for assigning ratings for console downloadable games as a way to address the rapidly growing volume of digitally-delivered games. Rather than having raters review each product (the Long Form), publishers of these games complete a series of multiple-choice questions that address content across relevant categories, including violence, sexual content, language, etc. The responses automatically determine the game's rating category and content descriptors. Games rated via this process may be tested post-release to ensure that content was properly disclosed. The survey-based method is also used in the ESRB/CTIA and IARC rating programs for mobile apps. The ESRB planned to phase out the Short Form for digital-only games, instead directing those developers and publishers to use the similar free questionnaire-driven IARC program, which was being adopted beyond mobile app stores, including the Nintendo eShop and PlayStation Store, as a requirement for posting."
"In response to concerns from Sony on the growing number of indie game titles that were receiving physical releases alongside retail ones, the ESRB began instituting new rules around August 2017 that any retail product was mandated to undergo the standard Long Form review for the game, disallowing the use of the Short Form for such titles. Alongside this, ESRB introduced a "value tier" for the Long Form review process for games developed at lower budgets (under $1 million), with a cost of $3000 for obtaining the retail rating. This decision has impacted the choice of several boutique indie game publishers, who have either cancelled plans for retail versions or had to stop selling retail versions to comply with the new ESRB rules."
Considering all that, if i got it right, ESRB rating of Bloodstained DOES mean that the game is close to be released because the rating must be done when the game is mostly complete.

Yeah I vaguely remember that ESRB got a video of the worst parts of the game and that's how they rate them (Which confuses me as to why they rerated San Andreas and Oblivion based on things not exactly in the game but that's beside the point). The game would HAVE to be near finished for this process. I did not know of the other processes as well. That's interesting.
