Riga Dohin. A shard born by crafting. Bloodstained Update 77 is upon us and with it, we were presented with gorgeous graphics update and a new feature regarding Shards, the Shard Crafting. Considering that, and other elements about Shards, answer THESE QUESTIONS! 1) "A crystallized form of demon power. It cannot be handled by an ordinary human being". That is the first description of a Shard that Bloodstained Demo have, explaining what it is. During the demo, Miriam also explains that the experiments with Shards prepared her for combat and after the first one, she says "Id' forgotten the way it felt, like uninvited claws scraping across my bones", to with Johannes repplies with "The demon's power was transmuted into that shard, which forcibly bonded to the crystal embedded in your body. The strength you gain from it is undeniable, but eventually, the crystal will devour you". Dominique also have something to comment about shards. She also talks about the fact that shards can dominate Miriam and Dominique buys shards to purify them. Shards can be obtained by killing demons, they can also be obtained by breaking a specific object called candlestick (see 2017 Demo) and they can be crafted using a shard and materials as catalyst for the creation of new powers. Considering all that, what do you think about shards, plot-wise. What are them? What are they nature? How they can be purified? There is more to shards than we think? Or they are just a gameplay resource whose pieces of information will be left in the dust? 2) Trigger Shards are now called Conjur Shards. When the demo was out, there was a bit of a confusion because the red shards had a lot of "summon shards", powers where you summon creatures, that looks like a weaker version of familiars, but familiars have a shard dedicated to them (the Familiar Shard Type). Considering what the red shards are (using instant powers, such as water attacks, throwing stuff and summoning quick-time demons) What do you think of the name change? 3) As revealed on Update 77, now you can craft shards. Not only you don't lose the shard you are using for the crafting, just the materials, but that creates new shards that can even be of different types. What do you think of the Shard crafting? Would you like if the shards made by crafting can also be obtained in-game, by killing demons or finding in candlesticks and such, or they must be exclusive for crafting? 4) What are your thoughts of the two new shards, Riga Storaema and Riga Dohin? 5) Since Bloodstained reveal, there is a single type of shard, Effective Shard, that still, to this date, doesn't have a single example of what it is, and how it works. The command on how to use it exists in the Demo (take a look at the control configuration, you use Effective Shards by pressing RB on Xbox Controller) but still no word or example of them. Do you think there is a higher motivation for that, or they just didn't had the opportunity to show one?
that's all folks!

1) The "consume you" part kind of reminds me of Dmitrii from DoS. However, I do believe that that the shards have something to do with the "true ending" that was in almost all Igavanias. Whether having too many will cause a bad ending (which I would not like as it would go against my tendency to farm) or a subquest of gathering items for a cure would cause the good ending I am not sure.
2) I think the name change is interesting. It has more of a magical/alchemical meaning to it than just "trigger". While "trigger" does have a more game design like naming, "conjure" has a more gameplay/lore mixture to it.
3) This reminds me of the "Soul Synthesis" of DoS but with upgrading this game's form of souls instead of weapons and instead of losing the "soul" you lose some materials such like iron ore and such. I like it. There's still an element of choice like "should I give up my Abaddon soul/Golden Ore that took a while to get for a Valmanway/Powerful shard?" I do not exactly know how much of a choice it would be compared to losing the boss souls but this is something we would find out when the game comes out.
4) A large explosion would remind me of the Mandragora soul in DoS (I've been playing DoS a lot recently can you tell?) I like it. The pillar could be used for stopping an enemy advance or as an "iron golem" killer if it stays and deals damage over time.
5) I am not well versed in showing off a game before it's released but if there's something that they show no information on other than name it may be something more important. Edit: Thinking about it, it might be like guardian souls in AoS and DoS. Same color and same button binded.

1) ... Considering all that, what do you think about shards, plot-wise. What are them? What are they nature? How they can be purified? There is more to shards than we think? Or they are just a gameplay resource whose pieces of information will be left in the dust?
I definitely think there is more to shard equipping than just crafting. I'm imagining souls from AoS and DoS but much, much more sophisticated. And I believe that shards will play a significant role in how the game ends, as in having multiple endings based on the level of Miriam's corruption. I can see at least three endings: one where Miriam is pure and has no shards, another where Miriam has a decent amount of shards but is neither here or there in terms of purity vs corruption and just a normal person in the grand scheme, and a third where Miriam is binded to the max with shards and is literally the devil incarnate in personality and looks. I am interested to see more of how shards function and are represented as development continues, that's for sure.
2) ... Considering what the red shards are (using instant powers, such as water attacks, throwing stuff and summoning quick-time demons) What do you think of the name change?
Honestly this totally makes sense. Conjur is a thousand times better than Trigger. Trigger currently refers to a few things that may distract the player. For one, as pointed out in the update thread, it just so happens to be an Xbox button name that is within the gameplay of a game to be released in 2 or more platforms. I think another aspect is that the inventive shard categorization names may not be what players would expect for a shard during gameplay. But overall, from my point of view, I will eventually get used to the choice of shard category names Iga decides on. In other words, if a shard that clearly focuses on magic in some way is called something other than "a magic shard", I'm totally OK with that.
The more unique ways to obtain shards, the better. Candlesticks are surely a given for obvious reasons, of course. In a similar vein, shards can be found where you would expect wall mac. I'm sure Iga and his fellow idea bringers will have some fun finding clever and unexpected ways to hide shards from the player. I'm all for taking what we have experienced in prior Iga games and fleshing those systems out to what can be considered their full potential. And crafting is one of them. I can't really comment too much on how I feel about the multiple facets of the shard system in general unless I can get to play the whole game after official release and test them all out, but what I can say is that I cannot wait to play the game.
4) What are your thoughts of the two new shards, Riga Storaema and Riga Dohin?
I think they are both stylistically appropriate and look really nice. In other words, awesome. Now that we've seen an example of how an attack-based shard evolves, I wonder what other attack shards will be and how they will evolve. Can an attack shard evolve to one that suddenly is, literally out of nowhere, becomes strictly defense-based? Would it be actually worth it to upgrade a shard if an upgraded version of a particular shard is not as effective in a certain style of attack? These are some of my thoughts.
I think at this point, the Effective Shards may be just as fleshed out as the attack shards we've seen. It may be just that Effective Shards are not "visually impressive enough to warrant a front page appearance" compared to what can be shown of both Riga Storaema and Riga Dohin. I have to give credit to Iga or whoever it was that chose to show the attack shards with the really wonderful castle interior scene. With this, I must believe that showing an example of an Effective Shard from Miriam while being in the castle interior may not be as good of a marketing decision as showing an attack shard there.

Bloodstained Update 77 is upon us and with it, we were presented with gorgeous graphics update and a new feature regarding Shards, the Shard Crafting. Considering that, and other elements about Shards, answer THESE QUESTIONS! Yes, Pure Miriam, I am most compelled to answer THESE QUESTIONS!Once again, the answers are complete with glorious green textTM. 1) Shards can be obtained by killing demons, they can also be obtained by breaking specific candlesticks (see 2017 Demo) and they can be crafted using a Shard and materials as catalysts for the creation of new powers. Considering all that, what do you think about shards, plot-wise. What are they? What are their nature? How they can be purified? There is more to Shards than we think? Or they are just a gameplay resource whose pieces of information will be left in the dust? Ooh, this one with the quotes is loaded. I'll take those quotes into consideration for this answer, too. From what we know of these Shards, they're usually made of "magi-crystal" that demons of all kinds find irresistable. One thing that may be discernable about their "nature" is perhaps a hellish origin, which could explain why the average human is incompatible with them and may be killed quickly by the crystal curse, with only "Shardbinders" having developed a sort-of affinity for their use. ^ Personally, I think there certainly is more to them than we think, considering the possibilities for multiple endings in this game. As made evident with Gebel, the sheer demonic power of all the Shards she's collected may eventually try to overwrite Miriam's memories and essentially change her into a servant of evil (or perhaps something far worse). 2) Trigger Shards are now called Conjure Shards. When the demo was out there was a bit of a confusion because the red shards had a lot of "summon shards", powers where you summon creatures that look like weaker versions of familiars, but familiars have a shard dedicated to them (the Familiar Shard Type). Considering what the red shards are (using instant powers, such as water attacks, throwing stuff and summoning quick-time demons); What do you think of the name change? Makes perfect sense to me. If anything, one thing it avoids is potential confusion over the button required to use them (on Xbox controllers, anyway). One other thing is that "Conjure" is just a better word in the context of magic, as that word is always associated with calling upon something to appear or engaging in magic rituals.3) As revealed on Update 77, now you can craft shards. Not only do you not lose the shard you are using in crafting, just the materials, but that creates new shards that can even be of different types. What do you think of the Shard crafting? Would you like if the shards made by crafting can also be obtained in-game, by killing demons or finding in candlesticks and such, or they must be exclusive for crafting? I'm satisfied by it. I think it's a good way to innovate & build on the old "Souls" system of the Sorrow duology of IGA's Castlevania games (considered that's what this "Shards" system is based on). ^ The fact that some Shards can only be obtained by crafting should help incentivize this feature. Maybe crafting is still arguably "optional", but it's possible you might actually need those crafted Shards for something down the line. Killing demons for Shards should still be the mainline method of collecting them (considering what Shards are), but creating some new powers from crafting is also a cool option.4) What are your thoughts of the two new shards, Riga Storaema and Riga Dohin? I'm wondering how effective Riga Dohin could be in the late-game (certainly more than the Morte Cannon's Shard, I hope). Both are visually pleasing, and I wonder how many enemies will be weak to Fire. Could Riga Dohin be enhanced further, I wonder?...5) Since Bloodstained's reveal there is a single type of shard (Effective Shard) that still, to this date, doesn't have a single example of what it is and how it works. The command on how to use it exists in the Demo (take a look at the control configuration, you use Effective Shards by pressing RB on Xbox Controller) but still no word or example of them. Do you think there is a higher motivation for that, or they just didn't had the opportunity to show one? So R1 on Dualshock controllers, eh? That clears my "Up + Attack" question up.I think they just haven't taken an opportunity to show it off yet. Effective Shards likely serve a similar purpose to the blue "Guardian Souls" from the Sorrow duology of games, wherein you'd either need to hold the button down to keep it active OR press the button again to cancel the effect (which slowly drains MP to keep it active).... That should be all, for now!

This may be a bit late to ask since the demo has been out for so long but what is the purpose of having more than one of the same shard? It appears we can carry up to nine of each but it seems that we only need one which can then be leveled up multiple times. Sorry if this question has be answered previously.

Time 4 Tea It appears that collecting more of the same Shard is intended to improve the ability granted by it. Plus, "Shard level" was noted by Pure Miriam in this screenshot a while back:

Maybe you're right. In any event, it should become clear in a few months once the game is released.

Time 4 Tea The 2018 Demo kinda explained that, in a way: Shards can be upgraded in two ways. The "Rank" by enchancing them with materials on Johannes, and that can even change how their look or how they work and their "Grade" by obtaining more of the same type, in order to power them up (although that seems glitched at the demo). Dominique also buys Shards (she claims the church is trying to "purify them") so having more of the same type can also be used to make some gold.

Pure Miriam - I agree that having more of the same shard seems to make no difference and is likely a bug. Otherwise, what would be the point of collecting multiple shards, aside from selling them. In one of the updates, they had mentioned that Miriam could "overload" if she had too many shards but I hope that there are some positive benefits to carrying many shards (increased projectile size/damage/etc) to give the game a bit of a risk/reward strategy.

Hmmm. Maybe there's a limit of shards and strength that has to be increased via items or purchase...
