You just can't please some people. Bloodstained already looks better than I ever expected it to.
You can't disappoint certain people no matter what either That pretty much says everything.

Tastes are tastes, it's hard to please everyone, and displease everyone. Me, personally, i don't really care about graphics that much. I look much more for a game with a great gameplay and fun factor than anything else. Back in 2015, i didn't expect a Igavania game. After the horrible Lords of Shadow trio (played the first one, didn't finished due to how boring the game felt, played the second one, same, didn't dare to play the third one) i pretty much gave up on Igavanias. Metroidvanias, for sure, several ones showed up but true IGAVANIAS* i didn't expected to show up. Then, Bloodstained was announced. From that point ownards, what i expected was a true Igavania, a fun game, following the Igavania genre that IGA helped to craft, and nothing more. I really didn't expect a beautiful hand-drawn graphic or a beautiful 3d graphic. I expected a fun game, following what i was thrist for. Three demos later (2016, the non-released 2017 and the 2018) i got what i wanted. If the game looked like 2016, 2017 or 2018, it would be enough for me. I had fun playing the demo, a fun i didn't had in quite some time playing games. Igavania was back, to all it's glory. Seeing the trailer now, i can see that the game has pretty much everything i wanted it to have, and more. I couldn't expect more from this. Graphics-wise, the game still has some problems, but hoenstly i couldn't care less about that. Igavanias weren't famous for top-notch graphics, but famous for their LOOK AND FEEL, which is different. I know people have different opinions and takes on this, but that's what i think. That's pretty much all i care for and all i wanted. ^ *I consider Igavania and Metroidvania the same genre, but i call" IGAVANIA" if the game was created, directed or with some envolvement of Koji Igarashi OR the game closely follows his path on "Metroidvania Gothic game" style.

Some people have absurdly high standards. Is RotN considered an AAA game? The graphics look better than they did back then. I don't know what people are expecting, some God of War or Resident Evil 2 tier graphics? Super high tech that involves capturing motion and putting it into the game?
This game looks exactly how I wanted it to be. The good ol' Igavania, just in 3D. This game is similar on how Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP looks like, except in a different art style with modern shaders. Some of the enemies look weird, but that's mostly because our brains are hardwired to compare this game to Castlevania in almost every way. This is no longer Castlevania, just a game that plays and feels like it.
I could go around explaining what the hell is wrong and why the graphics looks uncanny to some people, but in the end, it's just their minds working in different frames hoping that they get what they expect. The best way to appreciate something is to love it for what it is going to be and not compare it to anything else. If you can beat the cognitive psychology, then RotN is going to be a night spender for the most of us. I can already picture myself playing this at 12AM with a bottle of Mountain Dew and some pasta on my side. When the sun comes, my dad will ask me, "have you beaten it yet?" and I hope that I'll say yes so it'll be his turn to play. We've been waiting for so damn long. I can't wait.

Meh, I played Hollow Knight for its impressive gameplay. Not for its looks. If I wanted a purely-2D metroidvania that looks gorgeous? I've seen better. Bloodstained looks fine as it is, to me.

True, and I'm not entirely a fan of Hollow Knight's artstyle either. It's not my thing, I guess. I gave it a chance because it was quite fun. Plus, it's not a fair comparison for Hollow Knight is 2D hand-drawn while RotN is fully 3D. Similarly, I played a Metroidvania with a good story and gameplay but it was leagues more enjoyable than HK for me. It was Iconoclasts. I preferred its art over HK.

I disagree regarding Hollow Knight when comparing it to Bloodstained. Hollow Knight looks drab and washed out to me. Definitely not enough color or shininess for me. Of all the things you could have picked for "fabulous" graphics, Hollow Knight isn't helping your cause. We just like different things is all. For example, graphics that I like are more along the lines of Mortal Kombat 11 instead of say Guilty Gear Xrd.
It is true that I was extremely disappointed and frustrated way back when the shader(s) were being decided. I really wanted an ultra-realistic Bloodstained. Since that time, I have learned a lot about art styles and art direction thanks to users on this forum such as Scars Unseen and others. I have followed the development of the graphics in Bloodstained all the way through, and I feel like they have made the right decisions.
"I don't care whether game is 2D, 2.5D or 3D, it simply looks gorgeous. Bloodstained doesn't." My version of this sentence would be: "I don't care whether game is 2D, 2.5D or 3D, Bloodstained simply looks gorgeous. Hollow Knight doesn't."
See what I'm getting at here? We just like different things. We could keep this up all day, but I don't have the time. Life stuff and all. I hope you can look past the graphics issues you have with Bloodstained and enjoy the game this summer. I'm thinking this isn't an Igavania you would want to miss.

Eru's entitled to their opinion, as is Redogan and the other folks here, but this isn't really the thread for discussion about the trailer, since it was made for last month's update. You can discuss these matters in the trailer thread, or, preferably, make a new thread for graphics discussion. But as always, try to keep it congenial if you do. Either way, let's drop the subject of graphics in this thread and return to discussing the shards and crafting system shown off in the topical update.

I have been a Castlevania fan for decades. Not only did I pay for a high tier on the Bloodstained kickstarter, but I have played pretty much every single Castlevania that exists. I would consider Castlevania to be the best videogame franchise of all time... However... I can't stop watching that Hollow Knight trailer... it looks simply wonderful. I watched the Bloodstained trailer like twice and only felt sadness. Edit: Whoops! Sorry about the thread derailment

As a huge Igavania fan, I have to say I love Hollow knight! I adore the art and the ambiance, it is unique and so enjoyable to play. I prefer that very much to the 3D models we see in Ritual.

purifyweirdshard Reading the article and looking through the screenshot comparisons I think the move to using procedural generation was the turning point to the graphical downgrade we experienced. Before the change was implemented, asset textures more closely resembled those of the concept screenshot I originally posted. After implementing the change they could easily add damage to structures but the underlying assets were not as beautifully rendered as before. I'm not a programmer, but my best guess is that the higher quality textures weren't compatible with this automated process. Judging by the most recent video my assumption is that areas that were built and designed after the change do not look as bad as the areas we saw initially because they were designed with the capabilities and limitations of this automated process in mind and didn't have to be converted/downgraded to make things work. Either that or they were first in line in receiving a graphical overhaul by Way Forward, not sure. Posted my impressions of the new video in its own thread but there's a lot to like with regards to what's being shown. While the overall production values for the environments are still below that of the concept screenshot and in many cases the 2016 build, the game does at least look and feel like an Igavania game now. There are notable improvements to color contrast, dark spaces, and the usage of higher quality textures compared to the 2018 build. Compared to what I had feared the game may look like, based on the screenshots released in the last update, it's quite good and most importantly represents a visual experience consistent with Castlevania's legacy. The new environments weren't plastered with cartoonish looking 3D objects like we saw last time around which is certainly a relief: Obviously there are still things that need to be worked on, wooden objects still appear to suffer from Ikea wood syndrome, a number of assets still stand to benefit from fine-tuning, etc but we are moving in the right direction and that's good news and a breath of fresh air for everyone involved.

hyugakojiro of course, tastes are tastes, and i completely respect your opinion. About procedural generation, i remember the dev team saying that, due to Kickstarter's stretch goal "IGA's biggest castle", they realized they would need to make a REALLY HUGE game. IGA himself said that they calculated 1600+ rooms (Symphony had 942 rooms, a total 1890 both castles) and i remember him saying he considered 1600 to be "a bit too much" for a single castle. When the dev team was reminded that SOTN had 1890 for both, i remember they vaguely saying that the game would surely surpass that. So, in the end, with the task of creating a game whose castle is bigger than the size of both SOTN castles (IGA's biggest game) they realized they needed to use procedural generation to create scenarios, or else, with the limited team size they had, they wouldn't be able to finish the game. You can see that, a bit, in those videos. By watching all videos, since 2016, you can catch a bit of that. A specific corridor pattern (going down, and up, and down again), i could see it repeated both on the Church (Bloodless region) and also at a certain Marble whiteish corridor at some other video. Procedural generation has limits on what it can do, both on architecture and looks. So, there is that. At the time, i wrote a bit about that, and i know it is a valid concern. But, if they said they couldn't do the whole game without that, well, i WANT the game, so, there's that too. I'm not saying this to convince you or anything, just exposing why they decided that, to better form your opinion. Hope it helps

Pure Miriam appreciate the historical context. My comments about procedural generation were intended more as historical analysis as opposed to me voicing a complaint that is near and dear to me in the here and now. All things being equal I'd like to have it all (obviously), but I do realize that the team had real life limitations to work with and as long as the final game still plays, looks and feels like a CV game I'm a happy camper. It does make you think about the potential for Bloodstained 2 though. My dream scenario would be a development team made up of Art Play (IGA), Platinum Games (of Nier Automata fame), and Inti Creates. Art direction and design by Ayami Kojima and sound by Michiru Yamane and MONACA (including Emi Evans). I'm still split on whether or not to bring Gen Urobuchi along for the ride but I'll let you know once I decide

hyugakojiro That's quite a lot to ask haha. Ayami Kojima was invited but she declined because she was too busy. IGA insisted so much she agreed on doing a piece of art for backers. Michiru Yamane, as far as rumors and such goes (and IGA kinda said that too) was also busy, but since IGA and Michiru are long time friends, he managed to get her really drunk and made her accept his offer while drunk lol He said that on a interview, let me quote: "I basically tricked her into joining the campaign by getting her really drunk and making her promise she would help," Igarashi said. "You think that's a joke, but it's the truth." ( LINK)

Pure MiriamThat's hilarious. Lucky for us IGA is such a go-getter. Hard to time a project around the busy schedules of some of the world's most talented artists, that's for sure. Maybe he'll get lucky again. We can still hope. It's hard for me to imagine an Igavania without Michiru Yamane that's for sure. Having said that, MONACA has some tremendous talent as well. Here are two of my favorite tracks from them (both from Drakengard 3): Emi Evans ~ Kuroi UtaThe Final SongA more than worthy partner for IGA imo.

Mm yeah.. Hollow Knight design doesn't do it for me. Too much of the same stuff. Matter of taste really. I think its better than the "flash animation" from early 2000s at least, which I get from other metroidvania games sadly.
Bloodstained is getting better and better. I hope textures are easy to replace though, from a developer or modding perspective. I am keen on seeing this being officially patched if needed. So far its all mish-mash of old and new footage so I really can't tell whats final or not. I believe none of it are final.
And with that in mind, I missed the info in these videos where it says that "the graphics aren't final".
Some footage are amazing, other feels less so.
