A certain discussion at the Update #74 thread made me think about this thread in particular. In the past, it was common for games to have unlockables. Stuff that you could only have access if you unlock them after following some requirements, such as finishing the game and other things. Nowadays, things have changed. Several players demmand things from the start and many games delivers modes, characters and such with no unlockables and normally, extras blocked by DLCs. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is going to be a huge game with several modes and extras. Igavanias usually had unlockables, but times have changed. Considering everything shown below, say what would you like to be unlocked from the start and what should be locked at the start and why. (Each option below has a small description as a reminder of what it is). Comment your choices, comment how you think certain modes should be unlocked, vote at the poll. 2nd and 3rd Playable Characters: A second and a third playable characters are avaliable in the game, besides Miriam. Nightmare Mode: the hardest difficulty mode in the game, with different enemy placements and other things. Cheat Codes: cheat codes in classic way. Button combinations, normally at load screens or title screen for silly and special features. Local Co-op: a mode with special stages/areas where you can play with two players. Rare itens will be dropped by powerful bosses. Speed Run Mode: a mode with special features to help speed running (probably with stopwatches and ways to measure time and such). Boss Rush mode: a mode where you fight all game bosses. Classic Mode: a mode using the game's graphics to create a classic sidescroller action game with old-school like controls and punishing difficulty. Asynchronous Online Multiplayer: special features that can be added in the main game, using data from other players, such as borrowing each other's powers and bonuses, following a player's ghost and such. Online Challenge Mode: a versus mode where you can fight against other player or compete for points. Roguelike Dungeon: a mode where the game randomly creates a castle/stage/area to be played and beaten, every single time. Boss Revenge Mode: a mode where you can choose some bosses to play and fight against heroes and humanity.
That's all folks!

Before entering this thread, I thought you meant what in-game abilities should be unlocked from the start. Like: displaying enemy names, displaying damage numbers, double jump, moon jump, wall jump, backdash, etc.

Actually Pure Miriam, I would like *YOU* unlocked from the start. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
It's sad that I forgot that some of these modes were even a thing. The game is already the biggest game Iga's ever worked on in terms of size and scope and now there are these modes.
Initially, I had the same thoughts Redogan about what you meant. I had always found it weird that I needed an item before I could see what I was fighting, but I ignored it.
I'm putting my votes in for the Speedrun mode, Online Challenge, Local Co-Op(how was this supposed to be done again?), and Classic mode. I had figured classic mode would be obsolete after Curse of the Moon, but variety is the spice of life.

Cheat codes, local co-op, speedrun and async
Why -
Cheat codes for difficulty, if the game is to have them, kind of have the point of them defeated if they can't be used in your main run of the game. If you only have access to them when you can already NG+, there isn't much of a use for them. I don't like the idea of cheat codes in general for games unless they're hard and kind of "need" them, which Iga's games almost never do, but thankfully in this case it seems that there will be more "silly" ones or perhaps ones that might not be silly, but alter the experience somehow in a neat way, not really affecting the difficulty. For instance, how we can hit all four shoulder buttons in the demo to switch spoken language can be considered one of these. I imagine the majority of them will be like that, not so much "infinite health" or whatever.
Local co-op: same as above, for this to be truly enjoyed in the context of what it's meant for, two people enjoying the game casually together, it should be available out of the gate, at least within the mode itself that it's allowed. If a friend has the game and knows it has local, but there's the caveat of "oh gotta wait until I beat the game before we can play this", one or both of them would likely lose interest before that happens. If however this is only for a local version of "online challenge" or something like that, which is unlocked later, then I think it's fine to have that unlocked later. We just don't know much of anything about how this will work yet, if the local co-cop involves the main game at all. My earliest assumption was that the second player would participate by controlling something like a familiar in the main game, which amusingly enough is what Timespinner ending up doing in their game (check it out btw, very Igavania).
Speedrun - this should be allowed both for convenience sake for runners and their events, as well as how it doesn't spoil anything particularly, actually the opposite since it presumably removes all story content and extra presentation that would take up time. Instead of being on the main menu, this could be a toggle for file select/creation.
Asynchronous multiplayer - this is something we all expect is built into the main game itself rather than any sort of separate mode.

Since we don't yet know what kinds of cheat codes we're getting, I can't say for sure if I think they should be unlockables or not. If they affect gameplay (ie. moonjumping, giant weapons, etc.), then perhaps they should have to be unlocked. But if they don't affect gameplay (ie. Mustaches in the LEGO games, Shovel Knight's Butt Mode, etc.), then they should probably be available from the start, or at least easy to unlock early in the game.
On a short tangent, if Bloodstained does include purely cosmetic cheats like Shovel Knight's Butt Mode, I hope they don't prevent you from earning achievements like they do in Shovel Knight.

The only four of those options that I think should be available from the start are Cheat Codes, Local Co-Op, Asynchronous Online Multiplayer, and Online Challenge Mode:
The menu for Cheat Codes could be available right away, but you won't as of yet "know" any Cheat Codes until you either discover them via playing the game or [accidentally] inputting the correct code while in the menu.
Local Co-Op should be readily available for if you have friends living nearby, if you'd like help progressing through your game or just to have fun.
If I recall correctly, Asynchronous Online Multiplayer ideally allows you to appear as a "ghost" in another player's world? You are indirectly "racing" the other player to see who could progress further. <- NOTE: I don't actually believe this mode will be in the base-game. When it's available, you won't need to "unlock" it.
Online Challenge Mode does sound like something that many players (especially CV veterans) would want to try right off the bat just to see how well they'd do.

Cheatcodes should be "unlocked", if that even was a thing to lock to begin with.
The rest can be locked for me personally. I just want the main complete story-game. And I am a singleplayer, always has been.

For me I'd go with Cheat Codes mainly because I think it would be fun to accidentally discover them while playing the game your first time through (you'd be fiddling around on the main screen/or a loading screen and it finishes loading only for you to find Miriam & all the enemies now have big heads or find that all the candles now exclusively drop Mac & Cheese instead of mana pedals, etc.) and Online Challenge mode mainly because I think it would add a nice little wrinkle by giving players the option right out of the gate to either play the story/main mode or go online and fight a total stranger. Now I was originally going to toss in Classic mode as well but after thinking about it I think that this would be one of the modes that should remain locked until the player has beaten the game or met certain criteria instead of being unlocked from the word go.

I'm going with Nightmare mode, cheat codes, co-op, and boss revenge. However, I feel that boss revenge shouldn't have bosses unlocked right away. Rather they should become available as the story progresses.
Part of the fun of cheat codes is stumbling on them so if I have to wait until certain conditions are met then they become too obscure to find by normal means. Having said that, if these are like Ratchet and Clank cheats (where they are unlocked sequentially and toggled from a menu) then I'll be content with them not being immediately available.
Local co-op seems like a sensible thing to have immediately available. I can just imagine situations where friends want to have fun together but one has to wait while the other gets to a certain point first. That just kills the fun for me.
Lastly, nightmare mode would be fun to have unlocked from the start for those more masochistic players.

This one's funny for me. I don't NEED anything unlocked, as I see Bloodstained as a single-player game, so I'll gladly take my time to crawl through it and enjoy whatever "unlocks" come along the way as enhancements to the base experience. Everything I've seen so far (excepting a few rough graphical edges and whatnot) looks absolutely fantastic, so I really don't think I'll be hurting for anything additional.
All that being said, if Co-op IS an actual thing, that needs to be included out the gates. The reason I say this is because my wife would probably join me if we can dive into the game together from the onset. She's not going to want to wait three weeks until I've played through a substantial amount of content on my own to join me at a later time. We both enjoy the initial thrill of discovery. It's like watching a much-anticipated movie together for the first time, versus one person having seen it already and just taking a friend along for a re-view. Not the same experience.

coop, challenges, cheat codes (but youd still have to discover/unlock individual codes through play or clans), and asynch multiplayer
most everything else like speedrun mode and the higher difficulties are best as something unlocked after even the 'bad end' because by then people have got enough playtime under their belt they understand the overall gist of the game, and those who are gunning for speedrun mode because theyre well, speedrunners, are generally going to spend at least one playthrough learning how the game operates before hitting the runs anyway
