I really liked the system in OoE, but I would add one tweak, which is the ability to turn off (and on) gaining EXP points. It's not a huge deal, but at times in IGAvanias, I really wish I could just freely explore the castle and kill stuff at will without feeling like I'm grinding.

SOTN model with less exp as you gain levels is simple and ideal.

There's no "best" or "ideal" system in these circumstances. We are left with deciding what would benefit a NG cycling system along with the desire to control your level. Someone brought up "Dark Souls" level system where you have exp you spend to level. If the he has a shop that's not such a bad idea IMO. Reasons simple, the control is then permitted to the player without Amy arbitrary systems inplace. I ddon't even care if you lose "exp" when you die like Dark Souls, that parts not port ant to me, but the simplicity and the seeming meeting of all our "wants" is.

As long as we level up in real time and not have to bank experience to level up later, I'm good. I love it when the action pauses momentarily and stylish words like "Level Up!", "You gained a level!", etc pops up on the screen.
Also, I really like having the option to grind for levels to increase my power/defense if a boss proves too difficult. Show up for the final boss at level 60 and it kicks your tail big time? No problem, grind to level 70 and try again. Still kicks your tail? Grind to 80. Repeat until you are powerful enough to take the boss. I really enjoy it when games give you this option.

i dont care much about the level up system, but they should not have massive Overpowered itens like it had on SOTN, (looking at you shield rod + alucard shield combo)

I admit the shield rod/alucard shield is broken as hell and makes the game no fun but I still liked the crissagrim and ring of varda combo. Or even the "power rings" from the DS titles that get more powerful through certain actions like game time and such. I think these items are still ok to put in just because it takes a really long time for them to even be considered broken.

Like ChucklesTheJester said, enemies need to be tougher and leveling up slower but fair, Chrono Trigger comes to my mind where you dont need to grind at all, you only cant avoid the enemies.

I hope there is at least an option to turn off levelups. I would prefer a system that just levels up your HP and MP and ignores your other stats, but as long as I get some options I'll be all good.
