It is clear from the key config only accepting certain inputs that this game isn't yet accepting of the greatness that is the keyboard...but I am having the damnedest time getting a controller to work. Tried a PS4 controller, and even a cheap knockoff controller, but neither seem to be recognized by the game.

Just to tell you that I had no problems playing the game with my xBox 360 controller (a general rule for Steam games anyway).

This game natively (right now) only supports Xinput, which is your Xbox 360/XboxOne pads... or input via an Xinput "wrapper" such as Steam's "Controller Configuration" or DS4Windows, etc. This information should be shared somewhere official to stem the tide of these "my controller won't work/keyboard doesn't work" posts.

i had great success with a Playstation 4 controller and using software called DS4 Windows.

Open Steam interface then click "Steam" in the upper left corner, "Settings".
In the right side portion of the menu, click "General Controller Settings" then select "PS4 Configuration Support".
This will enable full support of the PS4 controller as if it was an Xbox controller.
A=X, B=Circle, X=Square, Y=Triangle.
