Aw... we won't be able to use Detective Eye or Fald Taiab in the Beta Backer Demo. I really want to try those out. (also to help confirm something for Pure Miriam ) We might get other Effective Shards in the demo though to help confirm what they are.

This has been pretty revealing into game trends in general. I had no idea people actually wanted story dlc until today. I was surprised by that too. I thought a majority would want only cosmetics as DLC and not story content, preferring everything contained within one package and not "more game" later (to some seeing it as being "withheld game"), but the opposite was true here. I'm guessing that's just because people like Bloodstained so darn much that it can buck that idea. Also may be due to how you could only pick 3 there. I can't imagine most would be "against" costume DLC, but "for" full story expansion.

I kinda want that one Dragon Miriam that's been going around the web for a while. But that's just me.I do like most of the results. But those top 3 results about the Backer Edition. That's a big 74.8% in favor of making it not exclusive "sooner if not later". But that question alone had the Discord rather messy for weeks since this survey came along... I think it would be a good idea to release it just because a co-op feature might not let you play in the secret boss area unless a kickstarter buddy was playing with you. Also, why keep it away from people who want to play it? The content is already there and you will already be getting to play it why not let others in on the fun? It only promotes the game more and makes it more fun for everyone. Obviously you would want some kinda perk for having gotten the content through kickstarter, so I'm more on the boat of waiting to release it with an update or perhaps letting backers have some kinda bonus for defeating or fighting the boss over the delux edition players, but I don't think we should hide the content since its on a pc and players will just rip the files and upload them anyway.

purifyweirdshard I think the main reason people are in favor of story DLC is that in the last decade, that has taken on the place in gaming that expansions used to. Look at Skyrim or the Bethesda Fallout games and compare them to Morrowind and Oblivion. The latter two came out before digital surpassed physical sales(at least on the PC), and they had full on expansion packs that provided more features, gameplay and story in a concise package. Fast forward to the former examples, and those expansion packs no longer exist. Instead, content gets separated into smaller packages sold individually, but the story-focused DLC comes closest to what we had before. I would be willing to pay for a larger DLC package that maybe had a new wing of the castle or an alternate area with new enemies, and new items and maybe a couple new shard abilities. Priced around $10-$15, it would be a good value added to the overall package. On the other hand, cosmetic DLC just isn't worth my money even at $1 because it adds nothing to the experience. In recent debates people have said they wouldn't mind cosmetic DLC, but the context of that preference is that the alternative in those debates are loot boxes, which many people rightfully loathe. It's not so much that the cosmetic DLC is desirable(remember the horse armor DLC debacle?) as it is that it's better than the publishers exploiting gambling tactics.

@darklight - That's true. An implication of keeping Boss IGA exclusive potentially means that he's not available in several instances that the game would use him. If, for example: He's not available in anything multiplayer because backer/non-backer compatibility He's not available in Boss Revenge (in whatever way that comes to function) By necessity, his existence likely has to be kept strictly non-canon, inconsequential and may not appear in future games because of the limited nature he can appear in game #1 If Iga's in all game copies (at least eventually, or as a skin revision), they don't have to make specific rules and concessions for multiplayer problems, they don't have to decide on whether to go through the trouble to program him in Boss Revenge if only a relatively small number of people can use him (and as before, only single player BR if there's a MP option), and they can establish him as a recurring thing or at least reference - of course, doubting that Iga wants any more attention in-game than he already is getting lol. I think we're under zero risk of loot boxes. I get you on all that other stuff. It can be done very well. I just imagined a lot of backers were still pretty traditional in their ideas of content.

purifyweirdshard I guess what I was trying to get at was that story DLC is closer to traditional than cosmetic. The closest thing to cosmetic DLC that games had in the past were little bonuses that developers used to throw out there for free as a thanks to the gamers who supported them.

I wouldn't mind a DLC where you play as a character that is unplayable in the base game, sort of like Gravity Rush 2 where you play as Raven and experience her story through DLC (love that game btw).

Blame TecmoKoei and Dead or Alive for making me reel at any mention of the words "Cosmetic DLC".
Cosmetic DLC is far too easy to churn out and release in large volumes. Easy money for little work.
Suddenly, you could pay $1000 and still not get all the available costumes in Dead or Alive.
As someone who likes to make sure I have all of the content in a game, including DLC, I hate the ease in which cosmetic DLC tends to dramatically increase the price to reach that goal often to ridiculous amounts while ultimately adding very little to the game when all is said and done.

To me Story DLC is the new Expansion. If they had expansion as an option I would have picked that instead. Diablo II: LoD = AMAZING! New act, new enemies and bosses, new classes, new items, new mechanics. All the Dark Souls games expansions expanded the lore, gave new items/spells, areas, monsters.

Since Curse of the Moon is no longer a prequel, they could make a prequel DLC.

I prefer that they just work on a new game. I don't really like download content in general, as I don't want to keep going back to the same game, no matter how much I might love it. For a "Castlevania" game I think it works even less though, because it doesn't seem like it would be satisfying to open up the bathroom wing of the castle to explore months and months after you've completed everything else.
Also, I just want to say that it's getting difficult to constantly read statements along the lines of "Stop trying to keep people from playing the content you're playing!". While there may be people that feel such a way, I haven't seen anyone express such a sentiment. It feels like it has become a straw man argument. It's not about keeping people from anything. I, and others, just don't like the idea of selling people on exclusive content, only to change the terms after everyone's money has been taken. There was no Kickstarter law that required exclusive content to be offered to backers. They knew exactly what they were doing by offering such content, so I think they should stand by their word. We aren't even talking about story related content here. It's a fourth wall breaking boss and a weapon, so even disregarding the original terms, it's nothing that would keep anyone from experiencing the story.

This is more what I meant by "traditional" earlier, Scars/Dumpling. Maybe not the right word, but yeah: everything done that is content all at once etc. I don't have much of a stance of my own here, no strong opinions on it. I'll just be glad for whatever new Bloodstained things happen because I trust them and like what they do, so it doesn't really matter to me heh

For some reason this made me legit want to explore a Castlevania/Bloodstained version of a bathroom section. Why? I understand this, and it's ultimately the best argument for keeping exclusivity. I don't want the exclusivity, but I can't argue with people wanting them to stick to their promises. It just makes me wish they never promised it in the first place. Edit: Aha at last! I am a Loyal Familiar! No longer New Blood! For as long as I've been here it's about time

This is probably just a sign of my relative inexperience with DLC, but the first thing I always think of is Shovel Knight, whose DLC expansions practically feel like new games. Of course, long nonlinear games are harder to design than short linear ones, so I can't exactly say "just do what Shovel Knight did!" To get a better idea of where to set my expectations, looking at other modern Metroidvanias is probably a good idea. Doesn't Hollow Knight have story DLC? If anyone's played Hollow Knight, how substantial do you feel its story DLC is?

@autumn, Hollow Knight is definitely worth playing. The only DLC that it has is for the soundtrack. The story additions you're thinking of were provided as free patches / updates.
