I really hope Bloodstained have Load Game instead of Continue, mostly because we are dealing with a few different characters, a few different journeys and a replayvalue with many different modes.So would we get saveslots of the old?Watching Trax beat new records through Twitch, we see this screen a lot. Loading game and begin anew. I remember seeing these as a kid, and my memorycard had so little space on it, I only could save 2-4 different SotN saves. And I was facinated about these animated icons, there were so many of them! I almost wanted to fill out the card and collect them all. Mind you, this was way before "text / icon achievements" even were a thing.
So I wonder.. Will we get at least 5 or more saveslots? Will we get fun icons like these at random, or through the progress we are making, either through boss-battles, procentage of map, or other?
I wonder about a lot of things, and this is just one of them.. Whats on your thoughts?

I think it would be perfect if he asked the fans to make a bunch of them. Perfect fit for goofball. At last! Yeah, I have heard about it if so. I had it back in my head, "they probably couldn't decide" and took them all hehe. Fine stuff! So, everyone should start drawing if this is a thing?

I feel like it's practically a given that we'll have save slots instead of a single continue button. With all the different modes and difficulties, it wouldn't be player friendly to force us to lose all progress and only save one playthrough. It could also be a bit tedious to have to cycle up and down, or left and right, to get to the desired save.
If I had to speculate then it could look like: >Continue last save Load, load roguelike,load classic New game, ng+, new roguelike, new classic Options Exit
Each load option can direct the player to select between a number of saves, perhaps 3.

Yes, "Continue" and "Load" don't/shouldn't necessarily supplant each other. Continue starts you with your last used save file, while Load would allow you to pick from several different files. I don't really mind if Continue is there or not, it basically only saves a single button press and a couple of seconds.
I don't actually think the other modes will have saves. Roguelike from how I'm picturing it is a set dungeon in one go and if anything would just have a Suspend feature. Classic mode the same, possibly with a Password screen. Wouldn't that be neat to fit in some silly/serious cheat codes with? Actually...maybe that's one of the primary vehicles for that?

I always liked the file select screen ever since I first started playing SotN. I was always curious about the icons; if you had to do some requirement to obtain a specific icon on your save file. As XombieMike stated, I checked out that video awhile back, and then found out they were random. I think that having something similar to the old style of save slots would be a nice nod, and also as stated, if they can request for fans to make some icons for them. Would be pretty neat.

it would be cool to have something that hearkens back to the memory card style icon grids but the biggest hurdle would probably be that every system has its own method of handling saves and therefore need to be coded during the porting phase

Those little bits are things i really like to speculate and think about. I do have some basic practical ideas.
First of all, we need consider what modes can unlock / give stuff to the main game. In old Igavanias, beating Boss Rush fast enough would give rare / unique equipment for the main character. Due to that, you needed to actually select a save file to be used as the Boss Rush data, in ordet for you to have (partial) acess to the equipment and itens of that save and receiving stuff you get on that mode for that save.
So, as i said, the first thing is to think what modes will actually unlock stuff for the main game? ANY mode that could unlock things for the main game, must have the same overall system. You pick up a file to use as data for that mode (the mode can use part of that data for the mode itself) and anything unlocked there will go straight to that file, that will automatically be saved when you finish the mode.
Due to that small thing, it's a given that the game will have save slots. I can't see a Igavania with such dynamic without it.
Now, SOME modern games that still use save slots, instead of auto-save / profiles / things like that, simply give several slots for the player to have fun with. Senran Kagura games have, like, 50 save slots.
As many Igavanias did, Bloodstained could probably this system, where you have a SYSTEM DATA (that records what you did in the game, to unlock modes, new game+ and other things) and the save slots themselves for you to play the main quest of Miriam and the other characters.
In pratice, it would work like this:
You turn on the game for the first time. Main menu has two options: > Start Game > Options
After selecting Start Game, you reach the 30~50 save slots list. Select one and start playing. When you finish the game, the modes you unlock shows up in the Main Menu, such as: >Start Game >Options >Boss Rush Mode >Classic Mode and such. Selecting any of those modes that actually give something for the main game, prompts the player to select a save slot to be used as Data. When the player finishes the mode, any gifts / presents goes to the selected save slot.
Modes that are tied to the main game (such as Nightmare mode and extra characters) shows up at the save slots list. When you go there, Cleared games has a symbol (A stained flower?) to symbolize a New Game+. Picking up a fresh save slot prompts a menu to choose Miriam, or the other extras, Nightmare mode and stuff like that.

No unfortunately there will only be one save file. Everything considered, I think it makes the most sense. Various games have done it this way too, so I wouldn't worry about it. Even Iga brought this up to us, and we agreed. Returning to form with old school games is also a plus if you think about it.
Good games that have done this are speckled throughout history too, a quick google search should suffice. Obviously this won't please everyone. Not that pleasing everyone is even possible. Nor Should it be attempted really. A middle of the road approach is usually best, just like with anything.
Great suggestion though Enk, good lookin' out. Impressive especially considering the game isn't out yet. Vintage games and new games alike will probably streamline like this tbh. Everyone I've talked to in the industry agrees at least.
Yesterday in fact I was talking to my friend who's responsible for Indivisible. Over 505 of their backers also wanted this feature. Underwhelming as it was though in terms of dev resources, even their devs agreed to do it this way.
Understand why you and others may not like this decision. Personally though I decided it's going to be this way and I've moved on, so that's that.

Angel-Corlux That's a shame, but it's the dev decision, nothing we can do about it. Although this brings up a question, that i don't know if you are allowed to answer: Bloodstained will have at least three playable characters, new game+ and nightmare mode. Most other modes, i think, doesn't require this, but these requires to play the game again. How that will work out? If you start a new game with a second character, you will automatically overwrite your original save file? So, if you finish the game, unlock new characters, new game+ and such, what will happen? Playing a second character means losing your New game+? That doesn't make any sense, at least for me. Save slots in Igavania mostly exist in order to play with extra characters, new difficulties and stuff like that. A single save file will force the player to keep overwritting and losing what it achieved. Unless there is some explanation i'm missing out. Unless each mode has it's own save file, somehow.

Angel-Corlux So other modes will be lost if I quit, or will it remember "only" last time saved, no matter of mode? Perhaps modes beyond the main game doesn't have this kind of progress feature? And if any rewards are maintained during these modes are indeed saved automatically (no need to confirm reward or not, just the thought behind if so). Pure Miriam Maybe each character gets own internal save.. If they are unlocked, you pick one of them, you just.. continue!? So if you pick Play... And have finished it at least once to have the other two characters, you just pick one of them. But then.. Those other modes should be pretty short, and something for you to run through in one sitting, since progress is only saved as stats after you finished it + rewards if there is any.. Hmm.

Pokémon games have but one save file per cartridge. I always felt like that was their biggest shortcoming, honestly. I wanted to be able to let my kid sister play the game too, but I had to abstain from 'sharing' my games with her for the dreaded terror that she may mistakenly overwrite and/or delete my save file.
Old school like SotN would have been absolutely ideal! I was hoping for at least 3 save slots, but that's just me. Little disappointed that I won't be able to save to different slots before cut scenes/battles in certain areas. Was looking forward to being able to hop around the storyline in my play-throughs.
