Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night A Bloody Good First Impression by Javy Gwaltney on June 07, 2017 at 08:00 AM At a recent event, I had the chance to play through the opening of Koji Igarashi's Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a spiritual successor to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Though the demo wasn't that long--15 minutes at the most--it did deliver much of the same feeling I had when I originally played Symphony of the Night all those years ago. The basic setup of Bloodstained has you playing Miriam, an orphan exploring a demon-occupied castle in the hopes of finding a way to break a curse that's slowly causing her skin to turn into crystal. A third-person, 2.5D action RPG, Bloodstained has you collecting powers that help you navigate the castle and defeat enemies. During my time I came across a wealth of weapons I could equip, like swords and even kicking shoes, but I kept to my whip mostly, which dished out a fair amount of damage from a distance. I also collected powers that let me shoot bones and flames at foes, which was immensely helpful when I came up against some of the more powerful enemies, like massive knights. The castle itself is interesting if a bit traditionally medieval. There's a lot of stone and bellowers. The art style makes the setting feel exceptionally gothic instead of generic. I had fun navigating the various nooks and crannies, leaping down on enemies with my whip. The demo ended with an intense boss fight with a demonic vixen who uses blood magic to cast projectiles at you and moves rather quickly. Despite almost losing the battle, I manage to get the upper hand in the end by attacking her from a distance. Easily the best and most challenging part of the demo was this encounter and I hope the full game offers fights that are just as engaging. Though I only had a brief period of time with Bloodstained's opening, I came away from the experience feeling pretty impressed and intrigued in what other monsters and obstacles await Miriam in this castle of horrors. It ain't much, but its nice to see new people enjoying the game. I am very curious about how much different it is from the first E3 demo Menu, UI. 15 minutes will be extended by those of us that wanna try things, track things and explore bugs. I encourage everyone to play through it plenty of times and give feedback. Also, to keep record for future updates so we can have "old features" remembered as trivia. Things like that are always fun to see just to feel how far a game have been evolved from a specific time to another. I wonder if this beta will be called E3 Demo 2 ^^ Thanks for the link and spoiler notification! I appreciate it highly!

God this pre update/ E3 stuff is killing me. Good thing critics are liking the game, not that I'm worried about it not being good because Iga has never failed to deliver when it comes to a 2D igavania, but critics reviews like it or not are crucial to a game success.

Phew, it's certainly a relief that the press seems to like the demo, though...only 15 minutes long? Was that just how long it took for the guy to get to the boss, as in he didn't explore or find secrets and stuff?

Still a good game, I replay it to this day every now and then. Despite its flaws, it's still on par if not better with many of the Metroidvania style games that came in the last few years. The atmosphere was top notch, if nothing else. /OT

Excited for the demo and the update.
I liked Harmony, for me it is much better than Portrait, mostly because of the Ayami Kojima's art and atmosphere in some of the parts of the castle.

When do we get this new demo, though? Will it be an update to the E3 demo on Steam, or a separate key e-mailed to us? I would think everyone gets a mail or a message about the demo, and a link to a site where you log in and download it or activate it.

If I remember correctly from the last go-round, we'll be given a Steam key by email. Unless they plan to let it loose via extra/alternative means this time (like GOG), I don't expect that to change. If necessary, check with Fangamer to make sure your email and backer pages are up to date.

Well guys, they haven't said that we do get this new demo though, just that they're showing new gameplay at E3. Will they give it to us? Maybe, but we don't know that yet. Just be careful with the expectations.
