I disagree on the Dark Souls thing. Dark Souls wishes it had this depth of imagery that is more directly tied to the world as it was in reality.

The key proponents of magical practice in the Mediaeval and Renaissance era in the West were Catholic clergy. One of the lesser known of the 16th century is Bishop Gottskalk the Cruel, a man whose history is linked to the mythical Raudskinna, a book said to be bound in human flesh. It was alleged to have held flatly evil magical rituals the likes of which would shock those of today's far more hardened standards.  He is thought to have fashioned a set of Nabrok, or pants from the skin of a corpse as part of a ritual linked to financial wealth.

This game seems to draw on the darkness of such piety rather well. As my good friend (a practicing magus for fifty years as well as a traditional alchemist proper who worked with metals) stated, "Wisdom is not necessarily benign."

The guys at The Game Kitchen always seemed dead serious about their love for old traditions of their country and I can't remember where I read that but Christianity in Spain is supposed to be the biggest influence for this game.

I definitely trust the guys, they could make anything and I'd buy that because of how talented they are with their games (on top of being awesome people).

That was before I became a literal Master of the Dark Arts (MA in Western Esotericism).

I recall being confirmed in ye olde way which involved a nice slap on the cheek from the Bishop to symbolize the suffering we will endure for our faith. I was then treated to a long speech on the evils of Protestants by an aging priest. 17-year-old me was confuuuuuuused.

Now, folks of a pagan persuasion would state some sort of superiority at this point, but it must be understood that most of this imagery comes from the syncretism of Christian mythos with those of converted pagan cultures to aide in a smoother transition.

For some historical body horror, St. Ludwina was a prophet that would give the movie The Exorcist the run for its money what with her intestines bursting from her abdomen and smelling of perfumes and whatnot.

I think I just got an idea for a metal album.
