- How did you guys come up with the idea of Chasm. The character, the story and the design overall? - How much influence in Chasm are created by the IGA universe, as well as the Metroid universe and other alike? Do we have an percentage? - Will there be an open beta for steam-users to try out before buy? - Any pre-order bonus we should know about? - How many monsters, including bosses are there in the game. Even counting color-variants, if there are any? - How many collectable and usable items are there in the game? - What can we expect in terms of end-game? - Want to share any easter egg, if there are any in the game? I saw a "floor-spiked-creeper" that I felt belong to Metroid, that was cool. And the Dark Souls bonfire feel. - If things goes well, and you feel like it really was a project you would love to come back to. Are you more about DLC or perhaps expansions or would you rather make a second story, like a whole new game? - Any comic-books / PDF comic thingy that might come along with the game or post-launch to tell us more stories. Perhaps as a prequal to the one we are playing in the game? Edit: No need to take all the questions, if you do not want to

After watching the gameplay of Chasm, I'm realizing something about myself that bothers me. I really, really enjoy the 2D IGAvania gameplay, the music, and the atmosphere. It's great! I think it is great for devs to make this type of game. It plays like the type of games I used to play back in the day. What I do not like is that the devs are making the game look like it did back in the day. It's great for nostalgia, but I feel like these games could use a better visual style/look to let people know that the game is modern. I know that better graphics is not something all devs can afford to do, but I feel like it is their duty to release a game that looks like it is from 2017 and not 1985. Game systems in 2017 are capable of so much more than the graphics used in games from the 80s.
Chasm looks like a game pulled right from the mid 80s. I find myself looking back at other recent games that chose a retro 8 or 16 bit look over a more modern one. Axiom Verge, UnEpic, and The Binding of Isaac come to mind. They are great games to play, but the graphical style adds nothing to it aside from the nostalgic retro feel. It really prevents me from getting into some of these games. I couldn't get into Axiom Verge for this reason. Salt and Sanctuary, for example, is a 2D side-scrolling, modern game that has a unique modern look to it. Other examples of the old school play, but modern look are Strider (PS4), Rayman Legends, Trine 1/2, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, and Mighty No. 9. To me, when a new game comes out in 2017 (and beyond), it should either be in full 3D or in 2D/2.5D with a sleek graphical style.
I'm really looking forward to Bloodstained because it is using a modern look (thanks to 2.5D) but retains the 2D gameplay mechanics. I will enjoy playing the retro Bloodstained game, but it will never draw me in like the main game has/will.
Am I crazy to think this way? On topic, I guess my question for the broadcast would be: Do the developers of Chasm (and other games like Axiom Verge) feel that the old school graphical style is required to make the game what it is? If not, why not go with a more modern look while retaining the old school gameplay?
TL;DR: IMO, games nowadays should have old school gameplay with a modern graphic style.

Mid...80s? Man, mid-90s maybe, but not at that resolution.
If you think this looks like 1985 Mario Bros, well...it doesn't lol. This is something between 16 and 32-bit.
If you want them to make the game look better than that level of 2D (or 3D), then they had better raise several million dollars somehow like Bloodstained did. I think they're doing pretty darn well with what they have and it's kind of an unnecessary jab at their work to say it looks like a launch NES game.
Now, that being said, THIS is a problem imo lol
However, what Chasm is doing is nowhere close to that problem to me. A lot of indie games do seem to a bit too heavily rely on a hipster "retro" vibe to push their game when it's more or less just ugly, selling Atari-looking sprites to people that most likely have never even played an Atari game but think that's what my generation's games were like and want to be in on that indie/hipster movement and be cool. NES sprites look better than a lot of things I've seen, those said blobby Flash-looking games...
Retro indie can be a great thing, but it can also be lazy and even insincere. It bothers me how so many of those games skirt more of an early, unshapen 80s look than the likes of latter NES/16-bit sprites. Maybe good pixel art really is that difficult...I've not seen a whole lot outside of Japan's work form those days that I thought was great.

I couldn't get into Axiom Verge for this reason. Salt and Sanctuary, for example, is a 2D side-scrolling, modern game that has a unique modern look to it. Yeah it is all about taste. For me its almost the opposite. Salt and Sanctuary, Binding of Isaac and some other games makes me feel like they are flash games. And those games feels a bit "meeh" for my taste. I guess this is also why Binding of Isaac Rebirth are about pixels. I think it is how you actually choose to animate it. Pixels however can't be cheated with draging any limbs and stretch it like mad. I feel love are put into pixels, while flash animation seems cheap in my opinion. This is because they were all free before Steam became big. Bloodstained to me, is a luxury. It's something else, something I would enjoy on every day basis.

This is something between 16 and 32-bit. Chasm to me, feels like an Sega Saturn exclusive but with a retro-filter attached. That is awesome!

For the record, NES resolution is like 256*240 and Chasm native resolution is 384*216, meaning it "only" has like 35% more pixels. That said, I feel like recent games sacrifice a lot in terms of budget to make full hd games look good rather than spending it on making good gameplay. 3d animations and such are so much more work than pixel art, and I feel it doesn't add THAT much to games.

Also. Games made with simpler graphics have better chance of being able to run on old computers. Gotta keep the folks who don't religiously upgrades their computers in mind.

-What was your initial reaction when you found out about Bloodstained's Kickstarter campaign?
-Which of Bloodstained's features are you looking forward to the most?
-What does Chasm offer that Bloodstained doesn't?
-Are there any lessons from developing Chasm you'd like to pass on to other developers?
-Is there anything you'd like to say to Chasm fans and Kickstarter backers?

it's kind of an unnecessary jab at their work to say it looks like a launch NES game. Yeah, I'm not trying to take jabs at Chasm's devs. I have lots of respect for the developers. I would just prefer a more modern look to games like this. It's not the graphics that made games great in the 80s and 90s. It's the gameplay, atmosphere, and music (which Chasm has nailed down perfectly). The graphics were a side effect of the tech used at the time--which is not an issue in today's world of game development. EDIT: I may have my decades slightly off in the above posts. It sucks to get old. EDIT2: I went back and watched more of Chasm. It does look more like an advanced 16-bit than what I said. Apologies. I would still prefer a more modern look.

Hello, here is my set of questions and comments: - I am glad that spikes and other traps aren't that damaging. In that sort of games, if would be quite a hindrance for progress. I don't think damage will be lessened from them as Daltyn levels up and gets better equipment, but who knows? - If there is gold, there is a merchant. what will be the item cap? I guess it's the usual 9. - Will there be more than a few lines per NPC? Stereotypes are die-hard, you know. - Have you chosen a number of different weapons with their pros and cons? Special abilities? Will there be skills that are out of the ordinary (magic-imbued and so on)? - It's also nice to see that enemies have different patterns. A way to have them diary-registered for further referring would do really good (also a suggestion for Bloodstained). - Any penalties for dying? I don't think there should be any for Chasm besides the ever classical "loss of all unsaved progress but no resources taken upon dying". - I truly am pleased you cite your inspirations for Chasm. purifyweirdshard is right, it is more akin to a cross between 32 and 16 bits. It's a fair choice to give it an old charm, while not making it look too... "antique".* Keep us updated! Godspeed to you guys! Lestaroth *Those who went the ultra-minimalistic way can defend it's to make players dive more into imagination (even if I feel it is dishonest sometimes). I know I wouldn't feel fine with playing games with an Atari 2600 aspect. Began with the NES. Having absolutely no regrets upon it.
