After seeing the 8th Development Update, I noticed something being really off. The backgrounds that this game has look absolutely beautiful, at least in my opinion, but Miriam looks like she doesn't belong there. I think the shader she has is very distracting and too colorful. It looks like she is just running in front of a green screen more than anything. And I feel really bad saying that because the shader she has is what most fans voted for. Does anyone agree with me, or am I just being crazy and super negative...?

I agree. If people watch the video here you can see that she definitely looks out of place in the environment.

I don't see it. It's probably the fact that the area in the video is a really early version that was hastily thrown together for the update. In which case it's the area that needs to be changed, not Miriam's shader. Let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Yeah I was previously pro changing the shaders. But Lighting and other things can be affecting how things look in the village. And as much as I liked the other shader better on Miriam, the majority voted for this one so I have to respect that. And it might be difficult to change the shaders at this point.

But...the game still has a year+ of development...soo...
I wouldn't get too nitpicky, until later on in development... :/

I somewhat agree, but I'm on the fence. For close-up artwork, I think it's almost indisputable that the shader looks amazing and really "pops." While I don't find it overly distracting in the new footage, I see what many are getting at that she seems slightly out of place. I honestly kind of like it, as I think it gives the game a more unique and artistic feel. A bit like when they mix live action and animation. It can be rather charming. Still, if they opted to keep everything consistent and fell back on the earlier shaders, that'd be fine too. Game looks gorgeous by any measure, and I'm hugely critical of art style/direction. It's only a narrow margin behind gameplay for me, and Bloodstained passes the test.

I wish I was around for the voting, because I really wanted the more realistic griddy style of SOTN. This whole cartoony look really takes away a lot of the "feel" for me. I'm sure if there were more non-forum original SOTN players aware of this game the voting would have went the other way.

more realistic griddy style of SOTN. Care to provide examples? SotN never struck me as being particularly realistic.

SotN's look is conceptualized in a pretty manga-ish style, Rondo of Blood before it even moreso, and SotN as its sequel reused a good bit of that. A bit gritty yes, but nothing near realistic I would say. The only kind of realistic look that Castlevania has had to me is the old NES art and how Castlevania 4 looks. I think what happened is that the player can interpret how the pixels look in different ways, how they prefer to imagine them, since there isn't a face drawn. Inspiration-wise (Vampire Hunter D) and concept art wise (Ayami Kojima), it was very much Japanese animation style though, and many wanted to recreate the idea/vision of that look in-game with the shader. Rondo though...heh: So yeah granted, SotN isn't THAT anime XD...but yes, I and many others as huge SotN fans saw it as leaning a bit more JP 2D. It wouldn't have changed how Miriam looks overall though, which is in itself too a fairly darn Japanese fantastical design.

Having watched the update video, I have felt the same way, even if that didn't strike me that much at first... I guess I learned to not be too picky on things, or then maybe am I too attached to old-school gaming and anything goes in newer games...? I think the closest mental association to this are these pens with a little picture sliding inside (floating action pen or a name like that). I don't know why.
I hope that there will be enough work on this all so it all makes a coherent ensemble.
Could shaders be chosen in options, with the one the majority voted for being the default one, or is it impossible an option?

It's highly unlikely that we will be able to switch the shaders. The whole point of the vote was that assets needed to be created with only one shader in mind. It just isn't as simple as switching up in real time and expecting both ways to look polished and cohesive. I wouldn't expect the option at all, even though a few people have asked for it.

Mine was never what I would consider realistic. It was very much anime-inspired. Not anime as fuck like Dawn of Sorrow, but cartoonish nonetheless.

I will be absolutely honest, I hate the games like these trying to be real so some crap like that! I mean, just look at one of the best game that came out last year! For example, Overwatch! It is a Disney styled game but it fits it perfectly! Also DOOM too! It looks so colorful and environment pops out because of it! Now I can understand the concerns but this game is NOWHERE NEAR finished and judging now is not valid in my opinion. I am 100% sure that this game will look amazing, all you guys have to do is wait patiently!
