I love how simple the map screens in IGA's Castlevania games are, but I think it would help readability immensely if the different areas were colour-coded, rather than everything just being blue. I made a mock-up to explain what I was thinking of. imgur.com/a/enNw7

I think i´ve seen something like this before^^ Thumbs up, good idea for Bloodstained;) This looks really familiar to me as well. Maybe I'm thinking of the Metroid Prime world map but I feel like it's been done elsewhere too.

Wouldn't use it personally cause it would make the castle feel like different areas instead of a whole castle to me but i'm not opposed to having the option either in the vanilla game or modded.

Agreed. It would help to distinguish the separate areas a ton. Good idea. :p

I mean it's still one castle, it's not like it automatically makes it a stage based game. It's a good idea to help differentiate. I think it'd be cool if it only becomes color coded once you leave that location and go to the location.
So you're in the chapel it's blue, you go to the library now the chapel has become a color. Once you've gone through an area once it then becomes part of the color system.

I don't see a reason why not. Iga and crew just got to keep color-blind people in mind if they do this.

Personally i'd find that colour coded map confusing. When i look at the map from Aria of Sorrow for example, my eye is instantly drawn to where i am and then i can look and plan my route to get to where i need to be.
When i see your coloured map my eye is drawn to the different coloured areas first and i wouldn't be able to tell where i am on that as quickly as with the traditional "vainia-style map". Interesting idea yes, but it does not work for me. Perhaps you could have the colour overlay as an option that you can turn on and off.
EDIT: Maybe you could toggle the coloured overlay on/off by pressing and holding a button on the map screen - eg. the map is blue till you hold (RT), then the colours are overlayed until the button is released.

It's an established modern convention to have color-coded segmentation in maps. My biggest concern is the readability of additional map icons on top of too many background map colors (save points, locked doors, etc.)
A very desaturated coloring would be ideal. Just enough color differentiation to tell you how far you have to backtrack to get to a previous region, but colors similar enough not to distract you from important map information.

Given the proposed size of the castle i think its a real possibility that you're gonna run out of easily distinguishable colours (was it the maroon area or the burgundy area i was heading for?) pretty quickly. It also has a tendency to look really busy and distracting so as genemag says desaturated palette if you're gonna implement this(which would limit your colour options even further). I'd really want this to be an optional feature either toggled from map screen as i said in previous post or enabled/disabled from options menu, dont force it on people.

Welp, I'm not really for color-coding nor am I against it. But, I think if they do decide to do it, it should be optional just like @monkf15h said. But, I do think they could highlight specific areas of the map to show "these areas are link."
Also, keep in mind that some people are color-blind.

Totally agree with this, really a map is a place used for guidance, it doesn't take anything from the game nor it forces the devs extra work while adding each area a color to distinguish itself. What a better way do identify a graveyard than with something like a marble grey (like the mausoleum in Aria of Sorrow), and a library with a wood brown (like in SOTN). Would love this simple yet elegant feature.

In order to distinguish area colours from save- / warp room colours they could colour the outlines of areas instead of the areas themselves. Or the outlines of rooms. Save- and warp rooms could also have icons instead of just colours.

I only ask that we have an option to turn this feature to classic so it appears SotN esque. Its not a bad idea but the colors do mess with me when im rolling over a map in say metroid games. One area is green one is blue or whatever but that transition sometimes messes with people. I know how utterly stupid that sounds though.
