Here's some interesting info I found about Vepar that also explains a bit about the choice of appearance.

In demonology, Vepar is a strong Great Duke of Hell, and rules twenty-nine legions of demons. He governs the waters and guides armoured ships laden with ammunition and weapons; he can also make, if requested, the sea rough and stormy, and to appear full of ships. Vepar can make men die in three days by putrefying sores and wounds, causing worms to breed in them, but if requested by the conjurer he can heal them immediately.
Vepar is depicted as a mermaid. Despite this, he is always described with male pronouns, although this may be because words like "merman" were uncommon or not in use when Vepar was first described.
It's actually a dude lol.

Hm, I'd thought about merging this into the "Boss boobs" thread, but I think I'll let it sit out here for a bit. It's a point that I think many can/are missing. I didn't know his story myself until today when I Google'd it earlier. I figured it was some kind of demon, but hadn't done any research yet.
It all just makes the design seem genius. If someone is bothered by it, then Vepar as a demon is successful in how he chooses to manifest himself, of course assuming he's a demon powerful enough to more or less choose/change how he looks.

So, the real demon is the chomping midsection then? That's pretty cool! That kinda makes sense as to why the top half of the monster was more bland and muddled than the rest.
