Symphony of the Night was actually one of the last Castlevanias that I played! I played the classic 1 and 3 when I was younger. I remember reading about Harmony of Dissonance shortly before its release, so I picked up Circle of the Moon to prepare for it. HoD was my first "Igavania." It was so good that Aria of Sorrow and the DS games became day-one purchases for me. I also think that this gave me a slightly different perspective from that of the usual SOTN fan, because I never compared each title to SOTN. In fact, I tried to never compare them at all. SOTN did not become the defining game for me, simply because I played most of the others first! I am one who enjoys the overall "feel" and experience of these games: the mysteries of the castle, the spooky lore, the amazing soundtracks, and the intriguing characters.
I even played the PS2 games before SOTN. I eventually played SOTN on the PSP (the Dracula X Chronicles version). It was a truly excellent game.
