It's seriously amazing how many people that actually haven't played SotN are behind this project. That speaks volumes for Iga's sense of creativity, Inti's talents, Yamane, the legacy of everybody involved...
But anyway, we need to get you guys to play that game. Like it was said in the first post, you've got: PS1 (the original for most of us, and not really inferior in any significant way), JP Saturn (Maria and some extra areas/content), Xbox Live (fast load times, no slowdown, decent port overall), PSP in Dracula X Chronicles (re-translated, Saturn extras, a solid buy overall since it has Rondo and its remake...but I like the original voice acting better D:..).
I've played all of them except the Saturn version. I did have a US Saturn, but that was more of a Working Designs and fighting game system for me.

I got intimidated by Super Metroid as a child. I never beat SM. I told myself that I will never play a Metroidvania game ever again. This was a big mistake. I plan on playing SotN soon.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is also on Playstation Portable (PSP).
SotN is included, once you unlock it in the game Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles.
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is a 2.5D remake of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood for the PlayStation Portable. The game is known in Japan as Akumajō Dracula X Chronicle. It was initially unveiled by 1UP on February 1st, 2007 with footage being shown during the 1UP Show, and was released on October 23th, 2007 in North America, November 8th in Japan, and early 2008 elsewere.
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is structurally similar to the original but has been rebuilt to portray a new 3D-based aesthetic. The original anime art direction has been replaced, and character designs have been handled by long-time series' artist Ayami Kojima. The story and cutscenes are completely redone with new voice-acting and with several alterations. Notably, the conversation between Dracula and Richter now exactly matches the one from the prologue of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and takes place before the battle commences, instead of after it, as originally the case. Furthermore, Maria's dialogue has been rewritten to be less blatantly humorous in order to match the more serious tone of the remake. The stage design shuffled a bit, certain candles drop different items, and backgrounds have been completely altered in some instances, for example, in the room before the Minotaurs boss in Stage 3'. The soundtrack has been remixed with contributions from Michiru Yamane and others. Certain tunes from the original game like Dark Desires and The Nest have been replaced by Tues Deus Meus (an arranged version of Dark Desires) and Moon Fight from Akumajō Dracula (X68000). A Boss Rush Mode and Sound Test option have been added to the menu. Finally, Stage 5' has been altered and an unique boss, the Hydra, is fought at the end.
As the remake is not an exact sprite-by-sprite port from the original, some gameplay mechanics have been slightly altered, decreasing the overall difficulty of the game. However, in some instances the difficulty has been increased considerably (the battle against Dullahan being a prime example) and some levels have been expanded with new areas to explore, some of which include new puzzles. Other new additions include certain obstacles that can only be bypassed after obtaining specific items. Furthermore, in the final battle with Dracula, now he displays a totally new, and much more difficult, form, with a wide repertoire of attacks.
The game includes a port of the entire Castlevania: Symphony of the Night game, which can be unlocked by finding an item in the main game. The re-localized North American version includes items that had been dropped from the original PlayStation version and includes new dialogue that more closely matches the original Japanese dialogue and new voice overs using the same voice actors who appeared in the main game.

Man that reads like a wiki article lol but yeah, SotN is on the PSP that way, though like I said above...I missed the PS1 acting. I never thought it was bad. Similarly, Belgrade not being Alucard in Harmony of Despair didn't feel quite right.

When I had the money to buy the game back in the day it seems that it went out of print very quick because I remember seeking it out non stop. So I had to borrow it to play it. I beat it then got the fake ending and something bothered me and it was that the bestiary was not filled up so I went to explore a little more and found out how to get the true ending.
I currently have it on PSN because the PS1 version is pricey and hard to find and more in black label.
I still remember the X-X!V''Q

I'm actually playing Dracula X Chronicles right now. Rondo of Blood is funny in a fun way, it reminds me of arcade games as a kid. (of course, its old enough to be one of those) lol
The SotN redone translation is not that different. The original didn't actually get that much wrong. The hammy voice acting is gone but the new VA's do a good job. Its funny how many people love the hammy original voice acting. lol

I've played it multiple times on my PS1 disc, at least once on PSP's Dracula X Chronicles, and even a few hours on that terrible Japanese Saturn port. I know that game forwards and backwards and you know what? It is not my favorite Igavania game. Paradoxically my favorite one was the one game not made by Igarashi: Castlevania Circle of the Moon. My second favorite? Aria of Sorrow, this one made by Iga. I think its a disservice to Iga's talents to continue to say that somehow his very first attempt at a Metroidvania was his absolute best and that he wasnt able to improve upon that in any of the 5 (FIVE!) subsequent Metroidvanias he'd work with. Six if you count Circle of the Moon which was based on his work.

I have never played Symphony of the Night, or any IGAvania for that matter. I heard it is a very good game, so I am interested in it. The only thing I have that can possibly run it, though, is our 15 year old PS2. And right now I am too absorbed in Splatoon and Pokémon to browse old PS1 games on Amazon.

1). I was too young when it came out and I never owned a PS1 so...there you go.
2). Sure.
3). I can get it on my PSV through PSN and I'm working on getting a PS3 so, it's a win-win I guess.
Admittedly, I missed a lot of "classics." Some people grew up with Mario and Sonic. I grew up with Ty, the Tasmanian Tiger.

1). was too young to know anything about games for systems my siblings didn't buy (not that a child could afford it anyway)
2). would love too.
3). I am a cross between a pc gamer and a Nintendo gamer (skipped the WII U as it looked like shit and just used steam and played a lot of GW2.) used to have a 360 and bought a lot of xbox games, then xbox live screwed me over enough to where I never wanna deal with them again. so at least with current systems unless it suddenly comes to steam its not about to happen.

I would certainly replay it, once more. This is one of those games that you can return to, time and time again.
Best version, is hands down, the Sega Saturn one. Game Content >>> Graphics, Maria is OP and has better style than in the remakes (PS1 doesn't even feature her at all), voices are in full Japanese and that soundtrack player from the beginning, can be more interesting and much more time consuming, than game itself!

Best version, is hands down, the Sega Saturn one. Them's fightin' words 1. Maria (not in PS1, nerfed in remakes) 2. Extra content (remakes didn't bring that in its entirety, there are missing parts still) 3. Japanese dub (unless you are English, there is no reason in the world you wouldn't prefer that over by a mile) 4. Soundtrack player in game menu (accessible from the beginning) For a mere "worse" graphics and "seemingly" larger loading times, it is a no-brainer, really. By all means, fight back, i accept all proper arguments!

I don't remember the first platform I played SotN on but since the Xbox Live version came out Ive replayed the game too many times to count. And now that its backwards compatible on XB1 the cycle continues.
Several PS1 emulation runs happened in there too.

If I could I would emulate SotN on my PC. But I have none of the tools to do so.
Even though I own it on both PSone and PSP, I tend to be on at my computer most of the time. Perhaps an emulator that take my disc would be in order.. Hmm..
