First, I'll say that there's no need to feel intimidated! ^_^ Poetry is poetry; all forms are allowed here. I just wanted to write using some of my favourite styles.
I'll explain them to help you understand.
The haiku and tanka are simple; they just require counting syllables. Five on the first line, seven on the second, and five again on the third. The tanka then has two more lines of seven syllables each. You don't need to worry about anything else.
The rhyme scheme I put up there is ABABCC. This means the last words of each line rhyme with the corresponding line of the same letter. So A rhymes with A ("ahead" and "red" in my poem). These kinds of poems typically follow a rhythm; this is the hard part, and I understand that some people have trouble with it. I can't even get a good rhythm sometimes. In my poem above, I use
iambic tetrameter, which means there are four beats per line. I'll show you the first line, for example; the capital letters are where the beats are.
she WALKS the GARden PATH aHEAD
The rest of the lines are similar, except the second line starts with a beat ("REAdy"), but I couldn't think of a way to fix that at the time.
I hope that helped at least a little. You seem to like free verse more, and that's fine. Just as its name implies, it has a lot more freedom, and you can do whatever you want. In my opinion, that is the heart of poetry as well as prose. Plus, you can break off each line whenever you feel it should be broken off, or you can even make
pictures with the words!
Expand your poetry! You're only limited by your imagination. There's no need to follow known conventions, styles, and forms; just write, let it flow, and have fun!
