Overall, I like 3/3 better. The only think I'm iffy about is the tendence of shader 3 to make some parts of the background pop out in a "shiny way". Look at the blood leaking down the exterior of the fountain (is that a fountain? You know, bottom-right). In shader 1 it looks more flat, but in shader 3 it has those white-ish outlines that I really do not like.
About Miriam: cell-shading FTW!

So, someone in a specific anonymous forum made this: A mix between the two shaders. IMO it's perfect, though I don't know why. Thoughts? OH. MY. GOD. YES. This is exactly what I think Miriam should look like!

So, someone in a specific anonymous forum made this: A mix between the two shaders. IMO it's perfect, though I don't know why. Thoughts? Not a fan. It's a pretty enough piece of art, but one of the best things about Shader 3 is the aggressive shading(and even then I think it could stand to be more so), which helps it maintain visual coherence at multiple scales. This one goes back to soft shading, which is just going to look flat once you zoom out. Agree with this, it looks nice but I like the bold black outlines.

This is actually better than character 3 IMO, but it is still missing something from character 1. Possbily the texture on the material in her outfit? Or maybe it needs just a little more shiny-ness? I don't know. But this is cool. It's nice to see that the shaders can be blended and end up with a nice result. This actually has less of that "pasted on" feel. I'm thinking my whole issue with character 3 comes from the harsh outlines.

Char 3 BG 3.
However I have to also point out I'm not very good with background analasys so as long as the BG shows off what's on screen and does a good job of mixing things into it I'm certainly okay with the character standing out slightly. (Just not with any artificial glow etc) so that concept posted by an anon looks freaking amazing as well. Tweaked char three for dat "anime" look is pretty nice.
Also do take into consideration when looking at background stuff that contrast and lighting are a huge deal to those with colorblindness so that stuff needs to be on point.

I believe this is the appropriate place to post this. IGA wanted to add on to his comment for this update. For the background shaders, these screenshots are taken from afar to show the background details. So when you play the actual game, it will be much closer to the character. It would be great to add this to the first post so that more people can see this "Sorry everyone! I forgot to mention something so important." -IGA Its cool, i actually like the zoomed out look for a couple reasons, so im wondering if itd be possible to go the CVHD route and put in selectable camera distances, it would allow players to take in more of the surrounding area to enjoy the scenery or plan their route through the area, or they could zoom in closer if they want to look at individual pieces or give their run more of a personal or claustrophobic feel (lol, could even use that closeup camera sort of like a field of view, have the characters back closer to the edge of the screen and enemies can sneak up on you >3) But other than the glowy bluish haze that takes over char 3 in the far view its a really nice camera setup

Gonna be hard to choose man.. But I'm going against the grain here. I choose background 1, character 3. I initially was impressed with background 3, but then I compared the staircase on the left and came to the conclusion that background 1 meshes better with character 3. This is, just like, my opinion yo. ʕ•ﻌ•ʔ

I wish people would put more effort into opening posts before making topics. This isn't a race Anyway: Update 35 is Live!Highlights
- Shaders and Screenshots oh my! Shaders 1 and 3 (what went into making part of that Miriam preview last update) have been mixed and matched with regards to characters and backgrounds to produce the screenshots seen in this update. Which do you all like?
- New survey is live for you to give them feedback. This will be the final time they ask for visual feedback (probably to move forward with work on the game)
- Ask Iga #7 is live!
- Meet Community Manager Mana Ikeda. XombieMike and Mana chat it up in the latest episode of the Bloodstained podcast!
- Enjoy the awesome fanart and cosplay on display <3
Indeed. I hate when people do that. Added your summary to the top, also, I won. =)

That blue tint has to do with her curse on her back. Remember when she runs that petals come off it? Its not the blue highlights that are around her outline during her far shot, i actually love those, its more the additional 'fake brightness' shes taken on thats most visible on her dress and dark colors, i think they dont need it since between the petals, her flowing scarf, the rich colors she has throughout, and the movement she will stand out just fine, and perhaps its just a trick of the light on that zoomed out camera but id like to see how it looks with her dress being less gray and more black

One thing I regret about the last poll was that even though I liked my votes and feedback if I had waited a little longer to vote I would have been able to include some more things that came from our conversations with each other. Once you vote it's locked in. I'd like to encourage people to hold off for at least a day or two.

Yeah, I didn't vote in this poll or send feedback to Inticreates yet for that same reason (and I didn't send feedback to Inticreates the last time around until after a couple of days). I want to take some time to think about what I have to say and not knee-jerk anything. I'm sure we will see that stuff eventually. These pictures have always been about shaders, not perspective or game play. Sure I agree. I'm just saying that if the most common viewpoint of the game isn't being expressed in the shots we have now, that can make it trickier to choose which shader I think works the best during normal gameplay. That's actually a pretty big deal and may change how I end up voting. Thanks for the heads up. I really wish there was a screenshot at the intended normal gameplay zoom though. Just so I didn't have to "imagine" it We should take a previous IGAVANIA and try to crop the newer picture to fit the sense of scale of the example we use. Maybe that'll be a better sense of it? That might work? Though the differences in perspective might make that tricky and I don't know if the camera in Bloodstained will at all angle itself a bit differently if it zooms in based on the locale we got.

In background 1, the light source is coming from the right side of the image. In background 3, the light source is coming from the left side of the image. I wish they hadn’t done it this way, because with this particular image, at this particular angle, the lighting coming from the right looks more natural. That is to say, it makes it look more like the torches are lighting the room than like the lighting is coming from somewhere “off-screen.” You can tell this isn’t actually the case though, by how much brighter the blood fountain on the right is in background 1 than in background 3, when there aren't any torches near it.
There’s a lot I like about both backgrounds, but I think I like bg3 more because the colors look more natural, the background detail comes out more, and most importantly, Miriam stands out much, much more from the background then she does on bg1.
For the character shaders, I agree with a lot of what people have been saying. character 3 looks better close up and character 1 looks better from further away. Choosing between the two is far more difficult for me than choosing between the backgrounds. The things I like about each I really, really like, but are completely sacrificed in the other.
Character 3 is way more of a hand-drawn animation look, which honestly I don’t like as much as the fully 3D figure look of character 1. However, the shading on character 3 is dramatically better than on character 1. All the shadows, contrast, and color changes just are so much more powerful and appealing. However, the detail on the clothing, the way the light reflects across the leather items, and the overall more realistic look of the character seems to fit with the background art so much better and just looks all round better in general. What I would really, REALLY like is a mix between the two styles for the character – something that makes better use of more powerful shadings contrasts but still manages to keep the clothing detail and 3D look. I’m not sure I can vote, because I’m not sure I can actually pick between the two different characters. They’re just both too amazing!
I think overall though I'm leaning toward character 3, because even if it's too much of an animated look and leaves off the details I want so badly to be there, I feel it's much more the direction the look of the game should go and I feel I can trust them to keep tweaking the look until it's just right.

This. IGA will make the final decision, and I'm cool with that. I hope he will blend the shaders and then make a few touch ups based on some of the feedback and be done. Onward to animations! I want to see the walk/run animations next. This is something that can easily be messed up and is extremely important, so I hope they give us some examples and take some feedback before they commit to anything. I feel like they have nailed everything so far, so I'm not worried.
