I was thinking a cool Idea would be to control how fast the crystal spreads, higher damage and defense, but you get taken over quicker, or slow the crystals pace with stat penalties. Would you rather play safe or reckless?
Edit: maybe you start off with fast growth then when you get a few levels and are able to handle the area better slow it down

Not a bad idea! I was thinking similarly in that Miriam can implant external crystals to augment her crystal growth and serve as character enhancements. Like, finding and implanting green augment crystals can speed up her walking or increase her jump height, red augment crystals increase damage output, etc. More colors like blue, yellow, and even colorless exist for other types of enhancements. But yeah, having the choice to let her disease spread to the point that Miriam turns into a demon... I would guess that, along with some stat boosts + tradeoffs, the dormant horns on her head will "wake up" then

I've mentioned possibilities like this before, one such example in the stats/leveling topic: bloodstainedfanforums.com/post/21249I'm pretty sure I contributed something similar to a discussion before earlier, too, but I can't remember where that was. I think the curse tied to gameplay would be pretty cool. I actually expect it to be, some way. edit: Oh, this also relates to another gameplay idea with Pure Miriam. Rather than the stat/magic-boosting nature of the curse getting stronger, Pure Miriam could instead be an option to play where you opt out of using crystal-related powers, but holy/pure sub weapons or items are present (or more effective). This could be more of a style of game with emphasis on candle drops and other classicvania elements.

My only hope is that if they do this, they won't punish what could be really fun. A bad example of this is Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter. Remember how cool it was to turn into a dragon in the first four games? Do it once in 5 and it's game over.
A good example are what you guys are saying. Crystal powers make you strong, like stimulants, but harm you long term if you use them too much. I'm also thinking there could be some sort of "Devil Trigger". It's turns you stainglassed mode for some seconds for a power boost, but the more you use it/level it up the worse the curse gets. Since it's a big game, I'd set the limit before "you're screwed" at around 40 activations.

Maybe as Miriam levels, she gains Crystal Slots that can be filled with Red, Blue and Yellow Shards. There would be six ways to fill out the Crystal Picture. Pure Red: Boosts Miriam's strength and defense. She'll hit like a truck and take hits like one too. Gains passives based on 1. Hitting things hard and 2. Taking hits. Pure Blue: Boosting Miriam's magical capabilities, Pure Blue focuses on long distance combat. Pure Yellow: Speed and evasion are king. Get in, hit 5-7 times, dodge attacks, kill, get out. Purple: Battle-mage. She can hit well with a weapon and magic. Orange: Physical glass cannon. She'll hit really hard, but can't take as much damage. Green: Magic thief? Didn't think this through.

maybe instead of a limit that is obvious, maybe pull a cv64 and have an optional boss representing miriams corruption that either gets stronger the more times you activate or shows up after x activations, perhaps it could drop its own crystal that gives miriam a 'corruption' costume to counterbalance her pure one
