I read this yesterday. I went into it without expecting much, I just have a passing interest in the way gambling might be changing (or failing, more like it). Traditional slot machines are indeed not very popular with people my age and younger. Video games and Castlevania were pretty far from my mind at the time, but it ends up moving in that direction, as we've been discussing and noticing with Konami elsewhere... finance.yahoo.com/news/gamblers-shun-stingier-slots-casinos-073143978.html?soc_src=mediacontentstory&soc_trk=maNow, the video game-izing of slots and the move to a more esports model for casinos sounds crazy, but would probably be effective. Is this really what's coming? Are we going to actually see erotic Castlevania action in Vegas? It might not be that far off of a possibility. The "arcade" we end up getting in these areas may more resemble a pachislot parlor. How would you all feel about this? |

I was in Okinawa a month ago, and I saw a couple video game arcades (and they were arcades, not the pachinko parlors). I was shocked at how much of the space was taken up with gambling games. Coin pushers, claw machine games, big elaborate mechanical devices, there was even virtual horse racing (with leather seats!)....
I don't enjoy the casino/gambling environment, so I'm rather ambivalent about a shift in the model or form of the gambling equipment...

I didn't watch this full video until now since I was referencing it in a Facebook post. wow
It's pretty weird to me still how they went with Hector. Obviously, almost every random Western gambler person like this guy is going to be like "lol NES Castlevania" if even that and have no idea wth Curse of Darkness is.
My theory is that it's a further cruel joke on us, referencing how Hector could play a secret pachislot game in CoD. Just something mean to laugh at us with. Thanks, Konami!

You and many others may not know Curse of Darkness very well since it isn't particularly a popular Castlevania or an IGAvania game...but they have that game's main character (Hector) pictured with Simon's name under it, as in Simon Belmont. They have a picture of Dracula on the right with Hector's name under it, identifying him further (correctly if it was the right picture) as a devil forgemaster.
So basically...like in that video, apparently Konami themselves think that this is Simon. It's "just like the NES game". At least with the pachislot games, they are side stories and have enough canon details and characters correct to attract nostalgia, this version over here, an actual slot machine, is just them being extraordinarily lazy because they figure the casual gambling market will at most say "oh, Castlevania, this must be Simon? lol cool"

I'm sorry, that's not it. Did you watch the video? It's Hector, with a sword, and it has his love interest in it, Julia.
It even uses the same cutscenes as CoD.

I don't understand why that was so hard to believe, especially after Castlevania Judgement's character designs changed almost everyone radically. I think the phrase "ever the optimist" may apply here, lol. I'm generally all for giving benefit of the doubt, looking on the bright side of things etc, but in this case...even I can't do it. I'd rather not get angry at Konami anymore. I find Konami jokes funny, but at this point, I don't think getting mad or upset with them is going to be productive or a good use of my time. I would much rather ignore Konami for the most part, check up on what's going on with them from time to time, go "huh, okay", and move on. |

I'm not angry really, per se, but I do still feel a kind of hopeless exasperation towards the whole ordeal. It would be different if I wasn't as big of a fan as I was of Metal Gear and especially Castlevania. There are very few things period I like more than the Castlevania series, let alone a different group of games. The other one I really care for is in a situation not quite as bleak, but not great either (Valkyrie Profile).
You seem to be into a lot of different stuff, Goob, so I think it's probably easier to focus your attention to other places. The new relationship probably helps, too. My situation is a bit different.
Regardless...there is Bloodstained. There are also new things made that I actually like, too, which is nice. It unfortunately takes me a deal of effort to enjoy something nowadays.

@goobsausage I think you're just confused. Its not about character "re-designs". People are mad because they're using a traced picture of Hector (see below) and calling it "Simon Belmont"  He even still has the Devil Forgemaster symbol in his back. But how can I expect Konami to know their IPs. Konami is Konami after all. |
