Upon think about it, I may have to go over the potential DLC list I have. Nintendo is using the Spanish Inquisition mentality to their pics. Don't expect it, it may happen. Expect it and it won't happen. Joker hails from the former branch hence the joke "never saw it coming." With that in mind as the MO for the other DLCs... Miriam may not be opted out of the list. It may be a win-win for both Iga and Nintendo. Iga will get to market his game on a global stage and Nintendo will promote not just the retro game we already have but also when Bloodstained comes out. I'm still holding hope for a Soul Calibur 6 rep because, again, no-one expects it. That's all I have at the moment. Given that Sakurai wanted Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 but couldn't include him since the game wasn't finished by the time Ultimate's character list was locked down, I would say Miriam is out. The DLC list is now locked and Bloodstained's in the same incomplete position.

I hadn't really thought about it much until lately, but what's really exciting me about this speculation period is that, even though Joker's presence has suggested a lot of likely candidates, all the biggest ones I can think of have a few major things working against them. It makes it a little hard to predict anyone with all certainty.
~DOOMguy, DOOM (1993)~ + DOOM is currently enjoying a resurgence in mainstream attention, and has an upcoming game coming to the Switch. + DOOM has a fairly decent history with Nintendo, even having an entirely unique game on the Nintendo 64. + Bethesda and Nintendo seem to have a respectable relationship these days, with Skyrim and various id Software games receiving Switch ports. + Smash likes celebrating gaming history, and shooters aren't really represented outside of the Inklings (and the Star Fox bunch, if you count rail shooters). - DOOMguy is all about guns. Snake, a character who also has a relatively hefty arsenal, presented some problems when he was being designed for Brawl. Things like the Nikita missiles were fine because they could produce cartoony explosions, but realistic weapons like the SOCOM pistol were pretty much off-limits. Of course, DOOMguy does have a few outlandish guns, like the plasma rifle and the rocket launcher, but a DOOMguy without a shotgun would feel weird. - DOOMguy runs freakishly fast, and with all those potent projectiles, he might be a backache to balance while still being believable.
~Erdrick, DRAGON QUEST III (1988)~ + DRAGON QUEST is not only one of the biggest names in Japan, but III is specifically also one of the most historically significant Japanese games ever made. + DQ's influence is massive in general, extending to Smash mainstays like Pokémon and MOTHER. + Because III stands out for its highly customizable party system, there are a lot of possibilities for Erdrick's moveset. All the Special Moves could involve bringing in a different party member to do something special, like swinging a big axe or casting a buff. + Erdrick is one of the few DQ protagonists who can be a dude or a lady, and Smash has been accounting for characters like that since 3DS/Wii U. - Licensing issues would likely be ridiculous. It was already wild to find out that Smash would still be stuck with only two FF songs, but learning there also aren't any FF Spirits (freakin' .JPGs) speaks volumes about how little SQUARE ENIX is willing to license out. Furthermore, all the DLC fighters are said to be coming with additional songs, and Koichi Sugiyama has a particularly infamous death grip on DQ's music. - Following Joker's example, if DQ is to be represented at all, there may be a significant push to include DQXI's protagonist instead, since he has more global recognition and can serve to promote DQXI's upcoming Switch version.
~Steve/Alex, Minecraft (2009)~ + Minecraft is one of the most famous video games on Earth and has an absurd amount of wide appeal. + Despite currently being a Microsoft property, Minecraft has been appearing on Nintendo platforms since the Wii U. + Steve/Alex, along with their stage, would presumably be pretty inexpensive to model and animate. Unique-looking alts would also be easy to make, since they would just require a new texture with no differences in the model. - Minecraft music is really darn chill. Sakurai specifically wanted to avoid having chill songs in Smash after an incident where The Roost played during the final match of a tournament. I've seen some fan remixes of Minecraft songs that attempt to make them more energetic, but it really feels like they're hitting the limits of what the compositions can reasonably accomplish. I suppose they could potentially supplement the song list with music from other Microsoft IPs like Banjo-Kazooie and Halo, but it remains to be seen how willing Microsoft will be to license it out.

given that game corporations can easily be goaded into dick measuring competitions (the badguys in wreck it ralph being a perfect example) its possible nintendo going to capcom and konami and the massive amount of music those 2 let sakurai use will make squeenix loosen their grip and try to one up everybody else, so much so i have the feeling well actually be getting MORE final fantasy songs along with a collection of DQ and other squeenix medleys if erdrick is actually a thing

Is it just me, or did Patch 3.0 nerf Shield damage? (or buff Shields for every character?)

Galamoth Projectiles now deal less damage to shields. Melee is still as before.
