Tree of Savior is a Korean developed MMO that's set to release sometime this year probably. Now wait a minute you're already thinking "What's the big deal about a Korean MMO? They're all grindy and boring, they're all the same!" And this game is the same, but in a very different way. Queue in Ragnarok Online. This game means nothing to you if you didn't play it, but for any of you that spent your younger days playing it, you had delved into a large and convoluted game rife with complicated mechanics to avoid and exploit. Maybe you attained the coveted instant cast, trained your homunculus, defended powerful attacks with immensely powerful armor or ruined those high HP paladins with a simple throw of an Acid Bomb. Ragnarok had a massive wealth of private servers. The game spawned a few spinoffs of its own, and it was often praised for its soundtrack and great amount of freedom in playstyle. It ruled in an MMO market of 2D graphics. Unfortunately for it, 3D was just around the corner. Nevertheless people loved their 2D sprite characters, and always hoped for a sequel to the game they loved. Ragnarok 2 never happened. It happened, it was horrible. It never happened. So we all let it die in our dreams, forever locked away in the past. Why does all this matter? Because Tree of Savior is the Ragnarok 2 we always dreamed about. (if you think the music sounds nice and familiar, you might like to know ToS has some old Ragnarok developers on staff) Create walls of ice and fire. Charm the local monsters. Command plants to attack your foes. Guide your allies with well devised party formations. Telekinesis. Time magic. The options are vast. "Why tell me about this now? The game isn't even out yet, it won't come to my country in years!" Well, the English beta will actually start in just a few days. We're likely going to see an international server spanning multiple countries, barring a few who have exclusive deals. How are the developers going to handle all these languages? They won't be. The community will. github.com/Treeofsavior/EnglishTranslationA built in tool for the community to easily translate text on the fly. Users can share their language file which IMC will then distribute officially. Tree of Savior can support as many languages as the community desires. Tree of Savior isn't being advertised as a "Ragnarok 2" or a spiritual successor. It's being labeled that way by the fans, and is gaining hype through the nostalgia of those fans. There's only one way to tell how much that nostalgia is worth, but it seems there's hope to be found. I'm personally very excited for the game (if it wasn't hard to tell). I hope to be sent a notice for the beta tomorrow, and that all my dreams will come true (maybe that's too tall an order). I haven't even begun describing all the things I'm excited about in this game.

Wait, the player characters are hand drawn? This actually looks quite charming.
Seeing how you obviously know a thing or two about it, I'm gonna shortcut my research and ask you to describe the gameplay. It looks like it won't feature auto-attacking and that dodging will be somewhat required, but it's hard to tell from a cherry picked official video.

Actually one of the very few games I'm looking forward to! I've spent so much time on Ragnarok Online's, official or private servers, and had a lot of fun. I wished there would be a Ragnarok Online 2 but it never happened. I'm hoping to get in the closed beta that's going to start on the 4th of August. By the way, do the character sprites and their moves remind anyone of Vanillaware's? They do to me. I find it pretty charming.

By the way, do the character sprites and their moves remind anyone of Vanillaware's? They do to me. I find it pretty charming. The similarity stems mostly from the similar watercolor-on-paper-esque coloring coupled with fine detail. However, the body lines aren't sufficiently exaggerated/grotesque to be quite VW in the character design department. VW also tends to do motion as if they were an animation studio, slowing down and speeding up certain sections in a single character motion for added dramatic effect, while ToS has a more natural flow, from what I've seen. They both have good fluidity though. So while it does remind of VW, it has enough of its own merits to give it its own distinctive and charming flavor. I'm a bit bothered that the noses are so inconsistent in the image posted here, it really throws off the style.

Seeing how you obviously know a thing or two about it, I'm gonna shortcut my research and ask you to describe the gameplay. It looks like it won't feature auto-attacking and that dodging will be somewhat required, but it's hard to tell from a cherry picked official video. Right now the main focus of control is WASD for movement, mouse for aiming (spells and stuff), and Z for attacking. I haven't played any of the betas myself, so I don't know the intrinsic details. I believe if you hold down Z then you'll keep attacking automatically, but you can rapidly tap the key too. I'm not sure if tapping the key makes you attack any faster. There are targeted and ground targeted spells and skills, which is where your mouse comes in. In Ragnarok, to use a spell like Ice Wall you selected a tile and depending on the level of your spell it could make a straight 5x1 wall. In ToS, using Ice Wall will let you path it out on your own, tile by tile, or a few preset functions. For meters you have HP, SP, and Stamina Stamina is used solely for running. Once you run out of Stamina you'll have to use the standard movement speed. You can use items to recover your HP, SP, and Stamina. There are roots spread about the game, which when destroyed will recover your stamina. There's a lot of classes. They promise that on release there will even be hidden classes. Characters start out as one of four base classes, Swordsman, Cleric, Wizard, and Archer. All further classes are derived and expanded from those. You'll be forced to choose to advance your primary class, or focus on a new class. (it goes further and beyond what's shown here) You could take your Wizard spells to the next level, or learn advanced Fire or Ice magic. Leveling up gives you points to allocate to your stats. You can allocate them however you want, so you could have a bulky mage, though that might not work very well it's your choice. A separate class level will level up along with your base level. This will let you unlock skills and passive abilities as you level up. There will be various dungeons and bosses which will be instanced. You can enter instanced areas with other players in the area or in your party. There was a system that auto-partied you but that might be taken out at this point.

Ragnarok was an exciting game because of it's skills. You had to choose what to invest it. It was a numbers game. The most damaging skills weren't always the best thing to go for, as there was a wide variety of them, and some skills were there primarily for fun. Rogue had a skill that simply put your chosen text on that ground, and that was it. It didn't kill monsters or anything. Priests could turn monsters undead, which served almost no purpose, except now they could heal them to deal damage, or ressurect them for a chance at auto-killing them. Scholar had passive abilities to launch spells automatically while they attacked, while Wizard got the area spells. Knight could go Berserk doubling their speed and damage, while draining their health over time while not able to be healed or even... talk... Assassins could coat their weapons with powerful poison, and surprise you by appearing out of nowhere.
Tree of Savior has a wide variety of skills as well. Chronomancer can warp time around them to place enemies where they were a few seconds before, even bringing them back to life. Oracle can literally see where monsters will attack, to be able to move out of the way. Sadhu can exit their own body to gain positional advantage with increase movement speed, and even attack. Bokor literally uses voodoo magic to harm the enemy and also bring up the undead. Pardoner can write up scrolls which they can give or sell to other players, which they can use as abilities. Dievdirbys can make wooden statues which will buff or debuff players or monsters. Necromancer can collect dead bodies to use in attacks, and even summon undead versions of boss monsters.
There's classes that focus on damage, various kinds of support, as well as crafting.

Personally I'm going for Chronomancer.
Centurion is also interesting.
Sorcerer can also summon devils, similarly to Necromancer.

I hope there will be lots of character slots, I don't want to have to delete some to try others. Pretty excited, even if I don't know if I'll get in. Also you may use this for more details concerning the classes so far: www.tosbase.com/game/classes/

bout time someone mentioned this. I've been mentioning this game when appropriate (Like I did here bloodstainedfanforums.com/thread/359/games-pre-ordered-looking-forward) for 2-3 years now and have never heard a PEEP from anyone else. I was looking forward to signing up for the korean beta when it was coming out soon but then I decided not to because the devs did something I wouldn't have expected... they... ASKED NICELY that foreigners wait their turn for a beta. Yeah go figure right? I couldn't say no to that =P So I've been waiting and waiting. My only gripe about the game's looks so far is it looks a bit on the easy side with easy to read 'DONT STAND HERE OR ELSE' circles with seemingly every attack that the enemies use with their highly telegraphed attacks. Of course, I'm not letting that dissuade me too much because these videos are likely the earliest and easiest of content, and harder modes for dungeons or whatever may remove said circles and whatnot. I also never played ragnarok online but was looking forward to this game anyway because it just looks good to me. Also, aruceid, you aren't darkriku are you? you mentioned elzord forums and something about you comes across as darkrikuish to me, note I never had a beef with the person or anything, just curious. I love elzord myself (though I dislike the pvp because na has had major lag issues with pvp for too long for me to enjoy, that and I couldn't be bothered to make myself a pvp specific set for something that didn't seem particularly fun to me beforehand..So no resistance sockets in my armor for example, which is a huge deal alone, and I had dark 3 on my weapon, which is useless in pvp because even minor resistance in pvp neuters it like no tomorrow). Anyway I never did get tired of elzord or whatever but I just kinda stopped playing (I didn't 'quit' per say, just haven't got around to launching it recently). If I played it right now I'm sure I'd still enjoy it.. game backlog is so heavy though, playing other games instead atm.
