Has any japanese company taken the deal yet? Because I feel that their corporate culture would generally disapprove of Epic's mid-development exclusivity deal. The issue is that these deals usually aren't up to the dev, but the publisher. 505 is not Japanese (they are Italian I believe), and has announced Epic-exclusive games recently. I agree that I doubt Iga would do it if it was entirely up to him, especially if he is aware of the negativity about it.

Honestly thought this topic would've gotten more chatter or something, but seems no one is interested, other than a few of us..... cyberakuma That link is very disturbing, hadn't come across it yet, so thanks for sharing. It helps show that I didn't make this thread in error and misplaced fears.Saw Question on, several times, including the day this thread was made and nothing was stated (obviously) to help explain if we should be concerned. I'm hoping that at least one publisher will be decent enough to not wait until the last minute or keep it as a 'surprise' and just come clean about their intentions, because this is becoming too disturbing a trend among companies. I have faith in things, but I also had faith in Gearbox and Obsidian and Pitchford screwed one side up, while Obsidian got screwed over and are powerless to stop it. I don't want to see that happen with this project, as I'm sure IGA needs this to happen just as much, if not more, than any of us. This is his new baby, at the moment, lol.

From the Reddit AMA with the Phoenix Point developers about a month ago
Considering this, in the theoretical that it happens to Bloodstained, which is committed to being DRM free, a release on Epic would be DRM free as well, and the "exclusivity" of it wouldn't actually be real. From what they've said and what I'm hearing, Epic isn't forcing addition of DRM, so it's at most a store you have to use to buy it and that can be the end of it. This again assumes that this actually happens.
edit: I find it weird that this isn't new information at all (28 days ago) and seems to be completely skipped or overlooked on the subject. I'm not very into/informed on the whole situation and just found this bit today from a discussion in the discord. The sensational hysteria over the whole thing seems very disproportionate to how I now understand the situation, as it was until now seemingly carefully talked around.

purifyweirdshard : it's overlooked because it's literally smoke and mirrors. You (the buyer) are still not getting any service a competent client could offer even for DRM free games, you're still giving money to a despicable company, you're still using a launcher with security issues and malware suspicions (or at the very least you need to have a less-than secure account). Those words sounded like smoke in the eyes of the public after basically messing up backers and telling them to deal with it because with all the money they received Phoenix Point's team couldn't care less even if they had to refund every single backer. They would have seemed more decent by not saying anything. The Phoenix Point debacle has been the absolute nadir of this whole travesty and I hope I never buy anything those guys are involved into. Screwing customers and then apologizing is one thing. Screwing customers and then making up excuses about how they're in the right and folks are in the wrong by getting upset is another and it really makes my blood boil. I especially have to laugh at their notion of "You can delete the client after downloading" lol yeah and then reinstall it every time I need a new update or a patch comes out. Superb.

It was however misleading to me on the outside reading all of this as an actual exclusive DRM situation. I think a lot of people will be getting that impression from the controversy who have no experience or pre-existing stake in the Epic vs Steam stuff going on. The Chinese spyware/malware stuff seems to be untrue as far as I can tell, and for games like Bloodstained and other Kickstarters I expect their patches and DLC to be minimal. What I had pictured was backers/fans of a game locked out from playing a game for x period of time unless they at every point are connected to DRM of a company they don't trust, and that isn't the case. It's instead principle rather than practical, which I wouldn't have known.
This is Angel's current statement about it from the Discord: "We are currently confirmed on Steam, GoG, PS4, NSW, XB1, anything else is speculation at this point, so please keep conversation civil and friendly as this awesome community always does".
He left the "o" small in GOG, not me, so nobody can get on me for that this time

Personally, I don't feel it was misleading. Just that for most people, that isn't the core problem or addresses many of the problems, as freddythemonkey explained.
Regardless, I am very happy to hear that statement that it is still confirmed as coming to Steam and GoG. I have no issue with the game releasing on other stores, even the Epic store, the issue I and many others have is it releasing elusively there.

So I mislead people, then? May have read into that wrong, been a long day of kids and trying to pack for a move, but whatever, not my focus. I wouldn't have any issue with EGS, if they hadn't already pulled shady shit prior to any of this. I wouldn't have issues with EGS, if they hadn't bribed companies into going exclusive or pulled their stunt with Steam files. I do have issues with them being shoddy and insecure and I don't believe a word out of Sweeney's mouth in regards to Tencent. But I also won't push on the whole spyware thing until more evidence can be found in regards to just how much power they really have within the company, but it's not misleading people when informing them of a very, proven, insecure service. Free games and 'but my favourite titles' are not an excuse to put yourself at risk. Steam has had many of the same issues, especially in the past, yes. But, on a personal level, I've had Steam 5-6yrs and no issues, whereas I had Epic launcher/account for a couple of weeks and to this day, I keep getting told my account has had a failed access attempt and all Epic tells me is, oh well maybe use a different password next time. GGWP Also, how does DRM factor into this? I don't recall it coming up, but may have missed something.
Edit: Also wanted to say that it does help a bit, Angel's response to the situation.
Edit2: I did misread into a couple of things, but will keep what I wrote up in full. Just willing to admit when I've been mistaken, apologies. Still stick by what I said in regards to EGS, though.

Not intentionally misleading I think, it's as much me not knowing enough about what's going on, but I've seen the issue erupt everywhere and I imagine others who aren't experienced or have done any research into Epic would get a similar impression and be swept up into the storm (just how the 'net works). It likely wouldn't change much depending on the person, but for me personally the exclusivity thing is a lot more severe if you have to use the platform to play the game. For the purchase itself, still not good if you hate the company and doing business with them, but the game you backed and are a fan of isn't locked behind using their service every day - meaning I'd have to wait 6 months/year for it to be removed from such.

The Chinese spyware/malware stuff seems to be untrue as far as I can tell,... It's ultimately a question of could, rather than whether it is, like in Huawei's case. Fact of the matter is, the Chinese government could force Tencent to force Epic to implement spyware and chances are it would take a while before anyone would notice. Tim can keep saying that's not how it goes but who can say what'll happen if Tencent pulls an Epic and throws a few ten million dollars at Tim's direction. Couple that with all the very real security debacles about Epic's account and Epic Games Store and you have a very suspicious situation. Not all will care and that's their pregorative, at least unless something similar to Huawei's case happens. ...and for games like Bloodstained and other Kickstarters I expect their patches and DLC to be minimal. I'd at least fully expect multiple patches for every game and especially so from crowdfunded projects. I think Pillars of Eternity was at around version 3.0.7 and was patched extensively over the years. So that'll mean that keeping EGS for updating purposes is pretty important. Not to mention the very reason SnapShot gave for the exclusivity deal was extensive post-launch DLC support. I might misremember, but it was something like 4 DLC sets in a year. So no, DLC will not be minimal.

So no, DLC will not be minimal. For Bloodstained? I don't see how you could know. I don't know what SnapShot is, but for Pillars I could see multiple patches being necessary. Bloodstained could get more modes later or something beyond the campaign (we don't know at all yet), but from all cases in the past Iga's Castlevania games have been released as a 1.0 and that's it. That was the stated intention for this as well, to include everything at once, and while that sounds unreasonable considering the stretch goals, still something I imagine they're trying to do. The case could very well end up too that by the time the additional content is done and ready, an exclusivity period is over and you can play/download the new content on the platform you wanted since it's no longer a consideration. In the cases I can think of, it probably wouldn't need your save data even, if moving that over isn't a possibility. The most likely candidates to me for "staggered" modes would be roguelike, classic, boss revenge, maybe new characters - all of which where your original character wouldn't be needed.

I don't know what SnapShot is Snapshot Games are Phoenix Point's developers. Sorry I left that out. Snapshot's explained reason for Phoenix Point's Epic exclusivity deal is (IIRC) four waves of post-launch DLC during the exclusivity period. The most likely candidates to me for "staggered" modes would be roguelike, classic, boss revenge, maybe new characters - all of which where your original character wouldn't be needed. Iga's previous games were also released on a platform where patching couldn't even happen. Most games release with the intention of not touching it afterwards unless DLC happens but that rarely comes true since bugs are always present and there is always something that could use a bit more polish. I doubt even Bloodstained will be completely free of bugs by launch and who knows, maybe the team will come up with balance patches if something turns out to be overpowering. Regardless of whether patches happen once a week or once a year, exclusivity would still suck. It would still mean that I (or anyone) would have to install something that I really don't want to install for non-zero seconds because of a promise that was broken, or that I will have to wait a year more than was promised. Neither is good.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
Bloodstained version First they cancelled COTM on GOG, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a gog user.
Then they cancelled the vita version, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a vita user.
Then they cancelled the MAC and LINUX version, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a MAC or LINUX user.
Then they go for epic exclusive—and there is no one left to speak for me.

DSLevantine is referring to Curse of the Moon being cancelled for GOG, cyberakuma , not Ritual of the Night. In truth, it was less cancelled and more never intended and not properly communicated to folks. That's more on Inti's policies than anything else, but with the Limited Run release, maybe that's going to change (wouldn't plan on it, though).

I had brought it up as a talking point of a very disturbing trend and had mainly wanted clarification on a concern that not only I had with it. Glad things are turning out ok, in the end.
