But there are also folks who justify that 505 provided a reasonable solution like using Wine to emulate Windows games. It sounds like a half-baked solution, but it's at least doable. I personally think they should just offer refunds like how they did for Vita. I realize that the developers will lose a significant amount of money by offering refunds. I don't want to think about it at this point to be honest. The only thing I can offer is pity. Linux users could just dual-boot for Windows, but eh, it's gonna be a considerable amount of money just for an OS that they don't want to use. Plenty of solutions to be able to play the game non-natively. The newest version of Windows I have a license for is the copy of XP on the AMD Athlon 3200+ sitting on my airgapped retro-gaming subnet, so dual-booting is off the table without a serious cash outlay, and I specifically backed Bloodstained to incentivize more native Linux releases, so I think you can see why I wouldn't be very pleased with the Wine option.

Currently the official stance is that we are not providing support for Mac/Linux. While it is our hope that the game will be able to run on something like Wine, it would not be until launch at the earliest that we'd evaluate compatibility with 3rd party software. Since there is the possibility that we may not get the game up and running at that time, we felt it best to make the call now. We did not want to hold off and have a potentially last-minute letdown. We do regret having to make this decision. We are working to get the game (and rewards) completed and taking mac/linux development out of the equation helps us do that. And yet you still do not have any actual technical problem to talk about or can even name.

Hi there. Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. The main questions are ‘why no native support for Mac/Linux’ and ‘why no refund’. The initial Kickstarter goals and platforms were chosen back in 2015, long before the first coder, artist or level designer was hired for the project. Things can change over time, but is had been our intention throughout development to provide native support for Mac and Linux. Unfortunately, as we began platform compatibility work, we ran into difficulties with the ports that we did not anticipate. The developer time and resources needed to address these issues would have to be taken from other areas of the game. As we look at the overall development of the project, we have to weigh the merits of putting time and money into each part of the game and make some difficult choices. This is one of those difficult choices, but we expect it to be the last. While we are disappointed that we will not be able to provide native versions of the game for Mac and Linux users, we think that the PC version of the game will be playable on Mac and Linux using external tools. As to the refund question, refunds for Kickstarter projects come out of the pool of funds initially raised by backers. As per the KS terms of use, if an element of a project cannot be completed and there are funds remaining, a refund should be offered. In this instance, the initial funding for the project has been expended on development. Our current progress towards launch is due to additional funding from the publisher, 505 Games. As per the Kickstarter Terms of Use (https://www.kickstarter.com/terms-of-use#section4), we are working to complete the project in the most satisfactory way possible. We will continue to make regular project updates on Kickstarter and keep the community appraised of where we are in development. I believe the extensive work we have shown via Curse of the Moon and the backer beta are indicative that we are working hard to deliver the game. To answer some specific questions: Is DICO still working on the project: Yes. Will the game come out in 2019? Yes. When in 2019? We will be announcing a release date soon. Will more crowdfunding be needed?: No. How much of the game is done (levels/art/models/etc)? Assets, in-game systems (i.e crafting, inventory, etc.) and the levels/environments are nearly complete. Basically, all of the elements of the core game are there. We are working to populate and tweak the levels. We are also working on platform compatibility, playtesting and of course smashing bugs. Thanks for your patience as we work towards launch. We apologize for disappointing our fans on Mac and Linux. What "external tools" are you referring to for playing the game on Mac OS? You knowingly took our money, spent it, and know you're telling us we won't be getting anything. We didn't give you money because we liked you, we expected a copy of the game for our platform of choice.

StarsmithYou're right it was perhaps too strong of a stance. I still feel that a person under those circumstances should be more cautious, and as a result not acting as if it's a stranger occurrence that it actually is. How was a Mac or Linux user to know the guys behind this Kickstarter we're going to pull this two years? Please tell us how we were to know they're garbage programmers, liers or dreamers?

absorbnix as I said more than once before I'm very disappointed in the handling of this whole matter by the team, especially concerning the lack of refunds. But attitudes such as yours are beyond irritating. I won't shrug off legitimate disappointment especially from the ones involved, but this is ridiculous. If they don't give a response at all, they're at fault. If they do give a response, then you twist every word into the complete opposite because you think they are obviously scammers always lying through their teeth. Just stop. It's nauseating. This is the last thing I'm going to say on the matter. If you're money had vanished I doubt you'd find his post and attitude irritating.

It has been nearly a month since 505 cancelled my reward without explanation or any evidence of good-faith effort to produce it, and you're clearly not interested in actually producing anything, so I consider my money stolen. While you're "noting" things Question, maybe you should note to your team that what goes around comes around. If my "Windows only" copy of the game doesn't run under Wine on launch day, I will instead spend the time making sure that it works on EVERY emulator that can play it.

That's the whole problem man, ONLY other backers have actually engaged me on it. 505 and Question haven't actually answered me, ever.
"As publisher, 505 needs to show that an actual effort was made to create a Linux version of Bloodstained, and identify the showstopping problem that makes it impossible to deliver."
No proof that any development was ever done on either platform, no massive show-stopping bug that I could have looked at and said "yeah, that's a bad one, at least you tried" or gone to fix, instead they've build themselves a defensive screen by saying that if they DON'T screw over the Linux and Mac backers, then nobody will get the game, so all of the other backers will come up with excuses for 505 and they can walk away without doing anything or admitting to any wrong-doing at all. All his answers boil down to the same blatant lie about technical issues. Let's get a few things straight:
#1 - I wanted this game just as bad as everyone else did.
I'm not here complaining about the publisher for fun. They sent me here. If that bothers you, take it up with them. I just want the reward I paid for, or a real answer why they can't deliver it.
I put up my own money for this, and I have offered to help, both directly and indirectly, because I want the game to be a huge success and it was looking pretty great, up until this late Christmas "present" that I didn't want showed up.
#2 - It's not the OS that's the problem.The game currently RUNS AS IS WITH WINE ON LINUX, with the Windows code handled with Proton (Steam's built in WINE support). Assuming that this board allows off-site pictures, here's some screenshots from the demo running on my laptop: ( picture link) ( picture link) This proves that it is NOT THE PLATFORM - at least on Linux - that's the problem. If Windows functions can be replaced with their equivalents and the game works, then 505 could at least try to take those parts and build them directly into their game. (It's called winelib, look it up.) There should be no reason for that being necessary, though, because UE4 supports both Linux and Mac directly. Here's UE4's editor running: ( picture link) (Note also that side-scrolling game is one of the damn game templates. Did it really take this long to do yet another side-scroller, when the editor GIVES you the basic framework?) So, there is NO problem with Linux running the game, or developing for it. There's a problem with 505 being unable to figure out how to do it, or more likely, they just don't want to bother, because #3 - It's a profit issue.505 have already admitted that they don't want to spend the time or money to release on Mac or Linux, despite having promised support for those platforms, and they admit they've already spent the kickstarter money so they can't "afford" refunds. Let's analyze this a little: - They have not expressed ANY troubles with Linux or Mac before this - They can't name any technical problem at all, not even vaguely describe one - They did not say they were dropping support for these platforms when they ran out of kickstarter money, but waited months, or years, for no stated reason - The game currently runs with WINE support so it's not platform limitations that is the problem - There aren't personnel issues (for instance, "our linux dev quit") or they would have stated that instead - There aren't licensing issues, or they would have stated those instead
So, that only leaves financial motivation, which is the real issue. What it boils down to - and what they should have SAID is - Bloodstained is MORE PROFITABLE on other platforms (like the Switch), and because they want to maximize profits, they're dropping platforms they promised to release on, not because not doing so will cause the game to fail to be released, but because they want to MAXIMIZE PROFITS FOR THEMSELVES. They're looking at a great release, given the polled interest levels, and lots of "sheep" sales, as it was put elsewhere; Joe Consumer buying a Switch cart at Target doesn't care at all how the game was made, they just drop their money and go home. Of course, if I behaved like 505 has, and sold Joe MY copy of the game and walked away without giving him anything, I'd get arrested for theft. #4 - There were other choices they could have made but didn't:- After release, if the game doesn't run on a Linux or Mac user's system, refund it then, as a return - Commit to spending part of the game sales on fulfilling their obligations to Linux and Mac users, after release - Ask for additional funding for these ports - Sell porting rights to yet another third party (Feral???) - Hire additional help for Linux and Mac - Get free help from the Linux, Mac, and UE communities to work through their "middleware issues"
It's hard to believe that 505 always intended to support Linux and Mac, when there are so many ways they could have done right by their backers, and have basically told us to go pound sand.
Question , you said you wonder about your effectiveness on this board but I wonder why you condone and support other people's decisions by coming here to say things you already know are unjust. If you already know the answers are going to make people angry, then you should be insisting that the person making those decisions comes here and deals with the fallout from their choices themselves.

We had Angel-Corlux coming around early on with lots of feedback and answers, almost every day. Since Question came around, I can't feel but wonder if both of them have x amount of other projects on their hands. I miss the days when you actually got answers, even answers like "We haven't decided yet" or "Soon!" It gave a nice flow. The updates also was a bit more meaty. And Discord more alive and ON subject of Bloodstained. I am not very pleased with how things have turned out, but I understand its more about business than passion when they are trying to CRUNCH the time =/= numbers =/= goals. At least, once the game is out, I really hope things work, and I really really hope it will be a success. And by that, evolve with both community + Artplay with updated patches to work on Linux and Mac, along with everything else that is a "must" today or next day.

I think a main factor in the change regarding update content, teases and so on from Angel and Iga himself was the change in release timeline. They had plotted out everything they wanted to say up to a 2018 release date, and more beyond that pushes into things they didn't want to be known until the game was released and/or have to come up with new things to talk about while maintaining the controlled release of information on both not spoiling things and not showing what they can't or shouldn't reveal yet (i.e. things that are in an unfinished state).
I believe that's the primary difference between 2016-early 2018 updates and now - when all of this was figured out very much in advance, latter 2018 and 2019 updates weren't in the playbook. They still very much sort them out in advance now, but only being able to say smaller/less meaty things until the big drop of finalized content when the release date and all is given.
Re: Linux, that's great to see the demo works in WINE. Someone earlier had reported that it didn't.

Yes, that's kind of the problem with that approach, it's very much a "your mileage may vary" situation. Steam's Proton is a well controlled environment and I'm fortunate that I have a fairly common, decent graphics card that's well supported. It's not that different from Windows; if the game crashed, it could be any of a hundred different things.
Most likely, assuming that there are not any hidden obstacles like DRM or overzealous anti-cheat code for online play, and that the demo isn't all that far off from what gets released, I'll just have a short sit down and figure out the right WINE settings, work up instructions for manual setup and a Lutris script for setting things up automatically, and that will be good enough for some of the people playing on Linux.
Maybe I am in the minority, but for me, Windows is just another runtime, like Java or .NET, and if I can play the game with what I have, I'm satisfied. I know many of the other Linux and Mac backers want a native version and I definitely think we were promised that, but I'm willing to be forgiving as long as the game still runs.

This point isn't how it runs (native, proton, wine, winelib, etc.), it's that Artplay made the promise therefor they need to be responsible for a solution and support it. Otherwise you will forever have the situation where when it doesn't work right they'll say not my problem. Please also remember that AFAIK wine/proton as a solution is much more limited on Mac which is also a promised target.

I backed at $60 so I could have the extras, but I'm so glad you asked.
Let's suppose that every single person who responded to the poll and said they backed because of Mac or Linux backed, on average, $100, give or take. That means, 505 could probably have taken care of this entire problem for somewhere around $2000, which is chump change for a game publisher, even a small one.
After all, everyone assumes that Linux and Mac are these teeny-tiny groups and, aside from those of us who were sent here when we asked for a refund, nobody else has bothered with it. Would it matter if I'd spent $100? $1000? Would it have helped if I paid extra for a signed physical copy of a Linux version that they never even tried to make?
