We are pleased to announce that WayForward (of Shantae fame) is joining the Bloodstained team to help us on the road to launch! Read more in our latest Kickstarter update #75 (and see fan art!) It's me, IGA. For this month's update, we have an incredible support who will be joining the Bloodstained team. Can you guess who? It's WayForward! That's right, WayForward, the makers of Shantae! As you may already know, they are top-tier when it comes to side-scrolling action games. There is even a staff member who previously worked on one of my projects, which is incredibly encouraging. In consideration of their past achievements, WayForward will be helping the development team realize my vision for this game. Maybe I am even more excited than everyone else - with their help Bloodstained will become an even better game. We also have some new enemy concept art to show you. This is Cyhyreath. Cyhyreath first appears to be crouching on the floor. Once the player approaches her, she will fly around and make a death shriek to attack the player. It's a traditional gothic horror design, and I think it's lovely. I was talking with the team just before writing this comment and, with WayForward's help, they have been busy helping to improve the game and fix any bugs that pop up. Speaking of which, there's a really tough one that’s making the game crash that needs to be fixed before the game reaches everyone, so we are scything through them all. Thank you, everyone, for your continued support! As always we've got collected some of your fanart to show off. If you'd like to join the parade, make sure to tag your art #IGAVANIA or #bloodstained to help us find it. (Maybe we can get some Bloodstained/Shantae crossover art after today's announcement?) www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=71543118nealakuma illusta.tumblr.com/post/175570777768/miriamillusta //mildkat.tumblr.com/post/178731021929/i-forgot-to-post-this-commission-i-did-for-a mildkat We cannot be happier to have WayForward on the project. Best known for the Shantae series, they bring decades of development experience to help us bring Bloodstained to the finish line. As for Cyhyreath, she’s just one of many amazing enemies that are in various levels of completion behind the scenes. We want to make sure that there are plenty of surprises on launch day, so while we will show off some of the villains IGA has waiting, we certainly won’t show them all. To address the ‘when’ questions that pop up each time we don’t announce a release date, I’ll point to my comment in our previous Kickstarter Update. As soon as we have a concrete release date, we will let everyone know. With WayForward on the project, we get closer to that announcement. Thanks for being with us as we continue to work on Bloodstained! Jason Ryan, a.k.a. “Question” Sr Community Manager – 505 Games

This is honestly FANTASTIC news. Wayforward know their $hit. They are arguably the premier developers of 2D sidescroller action games in the world, and one of the few that know how to develop interesting stages as opposed to just bosses. I don't know in what area or capacity they're working on, but whatever it is, in can only be good news for the project. They developed my favorite 2D action game of all time, Contra 4 for the DS. It also gives me hope that some day we might see a Shantae outfit for Myriam, complete with a genie belly dance animation for transformation spells. Come on guys, make it happen!

I love the Shantae games so any reference/crossover/cosmetic they want to add to this game is good news to me!
Yay for Wayforward!

So now we have the "Cyhyreath", which was basically previewed as one of the first enemies we see in Stage 2 [Frigid Hell] from Curse of the Moon.

great news to hear Wayforward is coming on board, love some of their work and their work was also very well polished which is something Bloodstained needs work on, maybe the extra staff will give the resources necessary to add hair physics? would be great to get a Belly Dance animation in honor of this new acquisition. what aspects of the game are they being brought on board to help out with? Last time backers were informed that a new team came on board we were told that was a big reason for a delay as it takes time for new members to catch up to what's going on so I just want to say don't worry about another delay, just make the best game possible and keep everyone informed enough to know progress is consistently being made.

I'm intrigued by this news. In the long run, I think it can only mean good things, as WayForward is great (see Contra 4) Personally, I hope they're lending a hand on the CLASSIC MODE (which I'm very much looking forward to). That would be super amazing.
So now we have the "Cyhyreath", which was basically previewed as one of the first enemies we see in Stage 2 [Frigid Hell] from Curse of the Moon.
Good catch!

Gosh, that came out of left field. Still, even if they're just helping out to squish some bugs, it's exciting to hear that such a great studio is helping out.
Although, I'm definitely with everyone who wants some sort of Shantae cameo now, even something as small as a purple ponytail.

This update isn't meaty as most others, but the two main information are quite interesting.
ABOUT WAYFOWARD: These guys need no introduction. Founded in the 1990s, with HUGE expertise on sidescrolling action, that is a wonderful adition.
ABOUT CYGTREATH: An enemy whose pronuntiation seems almost impossible to me, it's a common enemy found in Stage 2 of Curse of the Moon, i remember it. Fun addition. I wonder what kind of shard it will give us, if any.

I admit, I had to giggle a bit with this update.
カヒライス (kahi raisu) is really close to "curry rice" (カレーライス, karei raisu).

Yeah, Wayforward being in any capacity is pretty great news. Though I too would be willing to bet they're doing more than help find and fix bugs.

BloodyTears92 Yeah, I agree. I think WayForward could do a fine job if they helped the team with setting up Classic Mode, at least.

And the "Retro Level", and maybe more things... I admit, I had to giggle a bit with this update. カヒライス (kahi raisu) is really close to "curry rice" (カレーライス, karei raisu). That HAS to be intentional, and it has to be Iida's idea lol

I can't comment about WayForward because I've never played any of their games but more help is always welcome. They're an American game developer that's been working on 2D side-scrollers for nearly 30 years now. wayforward.comThey're a company that basically makes 2D games por amor al arte - because they love to make them, not because they'll turn a profit. So, basically, to pay the bills and keep the company afloat, they do licensed stuff (think Barbie, My Little Pony, etc.) they'd never do given an actual choice on the matter, but they always find a way to sneak in 2D masterpieces like Contra 4 and the Shantae series in between. Anyhow, they're not only great devs, they're likely IGA fans themselves and they know a thing or two about making great 2D games on a budget, since they're the original indy developer, so to speak. I'm really looking forward (no pun intended) learning more about their involvement when the time is right!

Really neutral for this update. For every positive thing I can think of there's a negative.
I don't know if I am happy because this hopefully means the work will be faster now or worried because they had to "hire" an additional team to help this late in the process. I'm glad everyone here is optimistic but I'm just not sure.
As for Wayforward's actual input, it would be a waste to only hire them for bug fixes and polishing but at the same time I kinda don't want them to do things "from scratch" if that would mean additional time in development.
Finally, I am mixed on Wayforward as a whole because they made some games I adored (Contra 4, Ducktales Remastered even if that had a foundation already) but I don't share the ultra positive opinion on other games they did (Shantae and The Mummy Demastered were good games but that'it IMO, and I really didn't like Half Genie Hero).
Though I will say one more thing: I don't really love the vagueness of the update. The game should be basically finished with polishing to do (if anything, VAs have finished recording their lines), so if they tell me they hired another team AT THIS POINT I would like to know exactly what that team will do. Bug fixes and polishing exclusively or working on some modes? Heh I really would like more details.

angel said on the discord wayforward has been working with them since the demo feedback started rolling in, and from last update youve seen how much the teams were able to improve on gebel, so iga got an excellent 2d dev that loves castlevania and iga games to make sure the work ahead went smoothly to hit iga quality, this is awesome news

It seems *very* late in the project to bring on another contractor. I was hoping for an early 2019 release but this announcement doesn't inspire much confidence for a first quarter 2019 release.

Something i started to think, i believe these updates are not "meaty" and full of content for 2 reasons: 1) SPOILERS
Games like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night doesn't have spoilers just on the plot, but on everything else. I believe most of us, in the golden age of Igavanias, were always excited wondering what kind of scenario we would see next, or what kind of song. What type of power or gear will i find now, and such. One update per month, if it has such content, would spoil way too much information about the game (just think the whole ruckus that happened when someone was able to datamine the demo and found several stuff). IT IS a problem. If i'm not mistaken, Mighty no 9 revealed it's FINAL BOSS before the game's release. That is not a good idea and it deteriorates part of the game completely. So i really think these kinds of udpates are all we are gonna get until the SECOND reason down there starts happening, which is... 2) MARKETING
We rarely follow the development of games and one thing they need to do is a good marketing campaign, and you can't do that WITHOUT spoiling a bit of content. If they keep delivering updates with tons of content and developmental process, they will be left with very little to do the marketing campagin when the game is finally out, after all, the game was funded, but still needs to be sold. The updates, i strongly believe, will be devoid of too much content because they need to save up some of it for a proper marketing campaign later on. I remember the demo trailers. Both the 2017 Demo, and the 2018 Demo. Very interesting and it really made you want to play the game, and the demo contents where mostly not revealed beforehand, aside from very small pieces.

It seems *very* late in the project to bring on another contractor. I was hoping for an early 2019 release but this announcement doesn't inspire much confidence for a first quarter 2019 release. actually given that the norm for betas are 2-6 months before release, im pretty sure they couldve gotten rotn out feb ish as a good game, however bringing on wayforward to help tighten up the game with their own expertise on 2d games may add some time for extra polish, it means the game will look and feel that much more epic when its done
what youre seeing is more the side of game dev most companies keep heavily under wraps because for most gamers bringing on consultants or people from another dev team within a company to help with a nasty bug or to help with polishing makes the game sound like its spiraling out of control when its really not
for a good example of how NOT to handle a release you need not look far to fo76, a game that had all the problems of a bethesda game and an online game and the servers werent even on their feet yet, holding a glorified demo for an early access game disguised as a beta disguised as B.E.T.A. 3 weeks before the game released (btw games have to go gold and be printed about the same time to ensure stores have copies to sell, even if the "physical version" turns out to be a cd key printed on a card inside the box)
